XP Service Pack 2 Available Now!

I never even installed SP1- it crashed on me. Didn't have the patience to redownload something that size.

Now my IE's Java is so screwed I'm forced to use Netscape- I'm just going to wait for a friend to download SP2 and send it my way on CD.

Use Opera, it comes with Java (if you download the larger of the two versions) and it has way more features than IE or Netscape.

Did they fix the big bugs? I don't want to ruin my computer.

My auto-update thing hasn't come up yet... have they started uploading it to people through that yet?

Nope. Not for a while...

BTW, will this add anything useful now that I use AVG, Sygate personal firewall, Thunderbird, and Firefox? It's like I'm already immune to spyware and viruses

Well, crap... I really want some of the wireless support that comes with it... looks like I have to do it manually!

It's not hard! Just download it and let it do it's thing!

It has tons more fixes/patches/speedups to things they won't tell us were slow to begin with etc. I personally am now more protected from viruses because of the No-Execute(or whatever) ability they enabled in my AMD64. Worth the download, IMO. Pass it around to all your friends.

It's at 92% ;)

Does Windows start up faster? Or is this "security only"?

I think so, although I felt sorta uni-sexual or genderless when it just said WindowsXP, not Windows XP Professional, when it started up. Don't worry when it does the little "please wait" thing for the first startup; It's just wanting to get all the n00bs to activate Auto-Update.

Edit: None yet, Mully.

Well, everything is great... except for one thing... they didn't fix my ****ing problem! :flame: I still can't connect to a wireless network after going into stand-by mode! They lied to me!

Service pack, eh. Think I might download it just to be on the safe side, with all these viruses wreaking havoc on the intarweb.

XP2 implements new security standards at the software layer and a good number of existing programs are not compliant--they will break. Check you utility programs first to make sure they have SP2 compliant updates or they may not work after SP2. You can probably turn down certain protections to get programs to wwork agina but that may negate the advantage of SP2.

I'm waitin a little while to see how bad the whining is from SP2. Some SP's made things much worse and were universally skipped over because they were so unstable.

weren't there alot of drawbacks to installing service pak2?
at least thats the impression i am/was under since like a month ago when there was a thread on all the stuff that service pak2 had.

someone care to elaborate on whats included in this package.. and perhaps a few negatives?

So does this pack have the obvious repercussions for us *cough* unsupported Windows XP Users?

maybe Ms should fix these problem before they release the OS instead of making people download huge ass nescessary files, hey thats an idea. damn microsoft to hell...

None at all.

Well i've had the pack on for about 4 hours now, no problems yet.

I have been using service pack two for about 2 months or something, on two comps... good to see they finally released it, its a good set.

Hmm, now all of a sudden my fuxing STEAM doesn't work >: ( and I've never EVER had problems with it before... well this blows, I'm gonna' try and see what's wrong with it.

The new firewall popped up and asked me if I wanted to allow Steam through... did it do the same for you? If not, you can do it manually in that new Security Center.

I just did it manually and went into Exceptions >> Add Program >> STEAM and it worked...

Nothing popped up for me, but it's fixed now, so that's good :D.

I have had no problems with the new service pack. Though the first little bit of using it got annoying haveing to allow programs thru the firewall, but its all good now. :)

I actually like the new firewall protection thing that it has, now. As long as everything (including the firewall itself) works AND keeps working, I suggest that everyone download SP2 for themselves and install this bad boi.

Yes

Goto te security center and you can turn of all the warning etc etc.

It's got a nice, easy little GUI thing to navigate around with. ^__^
