XSI Modtool

What is it? Can I use it fully to make models for HL2? What can't I do?

What's a polygon count, and is 7500 useable, if I want to make characters for HL2?

Thanks guys.

-XSI mod tool is a piece of crap, i would use Maya for modeling, then use 3ds max for uv maping and applieing textures, then use Photoshop to paint the textures.
-A polycount means how many polygons are being used to create an object.
-7500 is a little too high i think i remember something like 4000 should be good enough for a character.

Ok.. See, I haven't got too much money.. at all.. So.. I'll use XSI. As far as I know, it can do modeling, texturing, and animation, right? So yeah.. and it's free.

Maya for modelling eh? Our modeller uses maya 6.0 (let's just say he's rich... yes... rich...) but cannot at all export to any 3DSmax version, or even to the mod tool to get it ingame.

There's nothing wrong with the ModTool for inexperienced modellers.

Most of the people who say it's crap are the people who've been modelling for ages, XSI has a great learning curve and I'd reccommend it to anyone.

If you need to go from Maya to 3DSMax or vice versa, use the free filmbox format plugins. They're available from Alias, and you will need to register with them to download it (free. reg). It's also good to go from a later version of Maya to an earlier.

XSI is far from crap. It's just a different tool then Max or Maya, if they're what you learned first. For someone with no money to spend on expensive tools, modtool is a great solution.

But, I can make full character models, and animate them in XSI, right? And are there many tutorials on it?

Thanks, I'll look them up right away!

Yes, you can. There are tutorials, but not as many as there are for max or maya, since it really isn't as popular as either of those. softimage has some tutorials on their site, and you could check out http://www.xsibase.com as well.

you also got a learning edition of maya , i use that , i am not rich eather but hey it is ok :) , btw maya learning edition is version 6.0

the mod tool is good there aint nuttin wrong with it and considering its free its certainly not a piece of crap.

Can you go from MayaPLE to HL2? I don't know if the scripts will work with it.

lol mod tool is basicaly xsi with gay watermarks, a stupid shortcut bar at the top, uncustomizable interface and 7500 poly smd export limit. its xsi, but free...and most ppl dont know how much ass xsi kicks. im never going back to max (worst uv tools ever)

I've done some max stuff myself and just started using the XSI modtool this week and I am pleasently surprised. After I started getting the hang of every key + alt / ctrl/shift has some kind of assignment (some deadly to slow computer), I have started to like it. And the uv stuff is working out quite nicely, i like how xsi has the default texture that's numbered and colored automatically to make sure your poly's are oriented right. I just wish I could get my textures to export.
