I have put together this FAQ after I have received several questions about exporting to SMD using XSI.

- When I export to a Model SMD, the resulting SMD file doesn't contain any bones!
A: Make sure you have nothing selected when you export to SMD. If you select a mesh or a bone for instance, only the selected objects will get exported. This results in an invalid SMD file.
- When I export my mesh, I get no triangles in the resulting SMD file.
A: Make sure your mesh has UVs and a texture assigned to it. The SMD file format does not support meshes that have no UV coordinates.
- I'm using a custom rig and when I export to SMD, resulting bones have wrong parenting.
A: This is due to a bug in the SMD Exporter. You need to do 2 things to resolve this. First, you need to make sure that the animation sequence starts at frame 0 (even for Model SMDs). Second, If you use a custom rig, you need to turn off the option "Remove unused bones" on the export property page.
- Everything exports fine, but when I look at my model in the HL Model Viewer, my arms and legs are in the wrong position!
A: This is most probably due to scaling of bones on the original rig in XSI. All bones *must* have a scaling of 1 in all axis. The SMD file format does not support scaling other than 1 and the SMD Exporter does not compensate for scaling. It just ignores it.
- I use a laptop and my maximum resolution is 1024x768. Why wont XSI allow this?
A: This will be addressed by Softimage very shortly.
