just read that article over at www.gamespy.com . in one paragraph it talks about the drivers for the XT series, and that they will dynamically overclock your video card, and it wont void the warranty at all!

I can't wait to see which 9800XT card is the best. Ive been saving for a 9800 pro, about 50 more bucks and im there, but now I'm surprised that im actually considering getting a 9800XT.

Isn't the overclocking dynamic in response to the temperature?

Like, if the card is running cool it will overclock and if it gets too hot it underclocks the card.
... similar to safeguards already on newer processors, but it is also allowed to overclock.

"I hope the 9800 XT burns in hell," says the jealous 9800 PRO owner.
:(

Im not very impressed really with the XT series
Overclocking graphics never voided any warranty cus noone can find any proof of it (no changing any hardware like old processors etc, except for maybe a voltage mod, but I doubt XT has some dynamic voltage thingy). And sure its pretty cool that it O/Cs itself, but I really rather do it myself. What Im interested about is if it overclocks both memory and core, cus when O/C:ing memory you're not looking for high temperatures, but for artifacts, which the driver might or might not be able to detect..
If it overclocks both core and mem, its a nice feature, but still nothing that amazes me.
If it only O/Cs core its crap IMHO.

Ditto.

Plus, this thing will cost $100+ more than the Pro at this point, and as such is not worth it. Your choice, I guess...

Will these new drivers be backwards compatible with the existing Radeon Line? Or no, because theres no temp sensor?

Of course. They aren't XT drivers, but Catalyst drivers (3.8), so of course they do all Radeons.
