It's shorter than some internet flash games i've played, is loaded with day 1 DLC, and has a terrible port from consoles. The price is 900% what it should be for what essentially amounts to less effort than most oblivion mods. Sad.

It's 2011 and Valve still hasn't came out with a DirectX 11 game. $85 dollars worth of DLC, Valve has joined the ranks of Nexon. Steam is not about real PC gaming.

Lets be real here. All the hype for this game was for nothing. Day 1 DLC is never justifiable not even to enlarge a 3 and a half our game. Portal 1 was short but at least it was sweet and fun. This is just a run for your money type scam. If this is the future of pc gaming, I'm buying a console with my next pay check.

I was expecting to be up all night playing this game. Nope, I found myself in bed by 3am with 4 hours of gameplay. And now, they want me to buy 80 dollars worth of DLC?! F**k off Valve, this pathetic excuse for a game is nothing more than a scam to make all of us PC gamers pay more money for something that is sh***y to begin with. I'm never buying a game again without pirating first. This is PATHETIC.…

gamers are/can be utter shitheads. also mind numbingly stupid. the kind of stupid where you wonder why they havent accidentily killed themselves. the kind of stupid where you want to do them a favour by ENDING THEM RIGHT THERE WHERE THEY STAND

i dont care if people dont like a game but why you gotta be so stupid?

I havan't played Portal 2 and I'm not really up to date with any of this, but is any of that true? 4 hours gameplay, $80 DLC? If so I can see why he whould be pissed.

exaggerated truths?

4hrs = 6-8 hours for single player another 4-6hrs for co-op
you dont have to buy DLC especially since they're mostly cosmetic

Finished the campaign in 8 hours, and I don't get why people are going on about the price, it's very cheap!

Well this is the internet...the same shit happens for every movie/game/product that is released. I didn't realize there was DLC either...what's up with the price?

Edit: Never mind, I guess there is a shop where you can buy stuff. $2 for a single animation for co-op...yeah.

6-8 hours for single player

6-8 hours mean a very short game, this is for sure. I still want to play Portal 2, but I will wait for a price drop. At the moment, the game is too expensive, imo.

Also, please, don't call stupid a person not liking a game. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion.

I'm talking $50 New Zealand dollars too, was $40 US when I bought it. Considering I got black Ops for $110 and disliked it a lot I'm pretty happy with Portal.

I guess you could argue all that DLC should have been included in the full game, especially when one of the biggest complaints is the 4 hour long single player. 6-8 hours is being extremely generous.

I don't understand. Why are they stupid? Popular sovereignty seems to say this is a bad game.

I feel that this is the best hat simulator that Valve have created to date. In TF2, hats were obtainable in-game and thus any old commoner could get their hands on them. Now, the true gaming elite can quickly identify their kind in a co-op game and immediately remove undesirables. I have a system in place where I make my co-op partner do a dance containing every single gesture available for download. A single mistake and they are booted. I urge you all to go out and purchase this game immediately. Buy the gestures straight away - there is no greater feeling that meeting another member of the glorious DLC elite and dancing the night away with them. After all - you're not poor are you?

I actually like that comment due to how subtly it skewers comment stupidity

The professional reviews give it a 96 aggregate. So shit.

I like how forums say reviewers aren't valid when their favorite games get bad scores, but when they get good scores they're a source of how quality the game is.

I am still greatly anticipating receiving my PS3 version and seeing what I think of the game.:D

I loved Portal. I loved it because it was original, fun, and effectively free with Episode 2 in Orange Box. Yet I haven't even bothered following progress of Portal 2, nor was I or am I even remotely interested in playing it. Why? It's baffling me, because I really don't know. Maybe it's the childish Disney factor of the comedy robots I don't like. Or maybe it's because it's been so long in coming that, like Episode 3, I just don't care anymore like I used to when the awesome HL2 phenomenon was young and vibrant and promised so much more than other games.

Or maybe i'm just too poor now to justify spending money I no longer have on such a tiny throw-away indulgence, and too cynical, when yesteryear that gut-busting gaming fix I needed was such good value for money.

This. I can't justify spending $45 for a 6 hour game in that I will probably barely touch the co-op.

ya probaly the care part. I couldnt care less about Episode 3 because the whole storyline has been stretched over more than a decade that I just cant be bothered

I also didnt follow portal 2 and would only buy it for co-op (360) or on sale (pc version)

These are just people that overhyped the game for themselves and didn't pay attention to what was said about the game before launch. If I remember correctly, they said the game was going to be at least 2x longer than Portal 1. It is, and the entire ride is filled with charm, humor and good puzzles. It takes about 5-6 hours to beat your first run through if you take your time, listen to all the dialogue and get stuck occasionally for a little bit. Then there's the coop campaign. That is completely separate from the SP and has even better puzzles and took me and a friend about 5.5-6 hours to beat.

The DLC people are talking about are completely aesthetic hats and accessories for the coop bots. They are 100% optional. Also, if you bought it for PC, the price for the game was as low as $35 shipped before release. I got my copy for $40.

It's still part of the game.

I'm still not interested.

This is so true. People usually say that reviewers are paid by the publishers (see Oblivion/Fallout 3 and all about Bethesda), so what really counts is the users score.

so what really counts is the users score.

ya they're usually so insightful

Another lazy sequel turned out to be a blatant cash cow, with 3-5 hours of gameplay. You should buy it if you wanna see Gabe getting ever more fattier.

poor gabe getting fattier by the minute while cannibals salivate in anticipation of their next meal/buffet

I enjoyed Portal, but have less than zero interest in Portal 2. I would never play Co-op, would never spend a penny on DLC and would never willingly pay full price for a game I might get 5 hours out of. If this is what gaming is becoming or has become I'm glad I haven't wasted my time with it for the last two years or so.

Valve can't deny that part of the fanbase is upset or pissed off. Something has changed. In my humble opinion, this is the Episode 3 effect. Frustration is surfacing.
Dear Valve, maybe there is the remote possibility that you are not channelling your energies in the right direction. Don't get me wrong, I don't have Portal 2 so I'm not going to criticize of praise the game, but it seems that after the Orange Box Valve failed to deliver a full-length SP game. Maybe this is what part of the fanbase is asking for.

Here's the rub. Yes, the DLC is optional. Yes, it's $80 for a bunch of meaningless skins, hats, and some admittedly cool gestures. You don't have to purchase ANY of it.

That being said, gamers are perfectly right to be up in arms about it because it exists. The fact that it exists means that people are going to pay for it. No matter what you might think about how needless this shit is, people will buy it. And Valve knows it. Therefore, this kind of thing becomes justified because people are dumb enough to buy it. The blame really lies with gamers and not developers, because developers are just pandering to the stupidity of players; can you blame them? They are a business, after all.

But the community should be mad at itself for allowing Valve to dangle this stuff in front of them. Everyone should be mad things like this exist. Remember when Valve used to give stuff away for free? They're no suckers, y'know. If people are willing to pay, take advantage of them. And believe me, $80 for some gestures, skins, and hats is taking advantage of people. It'd be rape if the consumer weren't dumb enough to consent to it.

As for the game's length, yeah, it is damn short. It's a great few hours, though. Would it be nice if it was longer, for the price? Yeah, it would be. But I still don't feel gyped in my purchase.

I'm in the same boat.

Remember when you could import skins, add sounds, and make models without having to buy anything but the game itself?

ya well those days are long gone. I blame you people for embracing console gaming over pc gaming

The game has some of the best, most well designed experiences I've played in a SP game in a long time. The setting is varied far beyond what I could have ever expected after the first game, and not in superficial ways. I'm five hours in, and probably coming up on the end, and frankly, Its absolutely worth the pricetag. Its very obvious how much work went into making the game. Its probably the most polished game ive played in 10 years. I've yet to play the Co-op but I'm sure that will be equally excellent. It is absolutely worth the price.

As for the accessory shop or whatever it is, honestly I dont give a shit. Stupid people will pay money for stupid shit. Honestly, I've given up caring for those people. In principle, I can agree with Darkside, but as far as practicality goes, its simply not healthy getting upset about stupid people being stupid. As long as Valve, or any company for that matter, makes an excellent game that I can pay a reasonable price for, I'll be happy.

Honestly, I think all this outrage about the game itself, is just residual outrage over the ARG. Valve ****ed up the ARG good and proper though, so I'm not surprised. But seriously, the game is fantastic, so don't let this butthurts convince you, almost everything I've seen being said about the game is extremely hyperbolic, or downright lies. The game is not a shitty console port, I didnt think that once during my playtime, and everyone here knows how much I hate halfassed ports. This is not one, and while I can't say for sure how their development went, the game plays like it was designed exclusively for the PC. If it is a console port, its the best god damn port I've ever seen in my life.

I think people just don't like that Valve have changed their stance on DLC quite dramatically, and I tend to agree with them. Here's a quote from May 2007, from Robin Walker:

You buy the product, you get the content. We make more money because more people buy it, not because we try and nickel-and-dime the same customers.

What a difference 4 years makes.

^There's a difference between real content and aesthetic and optional items. Only idiots are going to pay for the latter. Valve are yet to charge a dime for DLC maps or game modes or campaigns.

The game is very good from what I've played, and looks to be running much longer than any of the OP stuff says. I'm inclined to agree with Darkside on pretty much everything, though it doesn't hurt that I generally like a somewhat shorter game than most other people seem to.

So I take it there's no Episode 3/Hl3 trailer at the end? :(

I'm still not interested.

The game is not "too expensive" just because you have no interest in a chunk of it, though. I get what you're saying. Black Ops is likely a waste of money if you're not going to play its multiplayer component IMO. But then I can't really fault the game itself for that.

Haven't bought Portal 2 yet so I can't really comment on its length or quality yet. Of course, the inevitable Steam sale usually isn't too far off.
