PSM: Sony and Microsoft seem to be taking the exact same path.

Hirai: We seem to. Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they're right there - we just can't shake these guys. (here it comes) I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do. If you look at their strategy in other business areas as well, they tend to do that.

Hirai:...And the other thing is, you take a look at, for example, the fact that we incorporate the Blu-ray drive from day one. You're not going to be asking me, 'So, talk to me about this Blu-ray add-on that you have. Does it work for games? Is it just for movies?' That's exacly the kind of pitfall you fall into if you launch something that's too early, too premature...

I would have thought Kaz's credibility would've been lost after the "RIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER!" incident. Oh well, guess I was wrong.

Interesting how many people thought he was the only one not full of shit before this.

lol @ Kaz Hirai... He should stick to saying "Riiiidge Racer!", he actually looks smarter that way.

It's just their way of spinning things. Microsoft does the same thing to Sony. Just business.

I'm starting to dislike sony...I mean, they seemed alll cool and indie when the released the original Playstation, I really didn't think they would become a major player...(I had always associated sony with walkmans and TVs) But now they've become like this arrogant giant that can't come up with any new ideas. I mean for god's sake they could at least redesign thier controller.

Just when I thought I couldn't possibly hate Sony any more.

He has the audacity to say Microsoft copied them? What about their new on-line service? I can pull up a quote, Sony even called it "Live" for shits sake.

What about the copying of Nintendo's controllers?

They have some nerve to call anyone out for copying.

It's just another lie from a liar. What do you expect? Microsoft had planned to use the HD-DVD drive from day one, but the technology wasn't ready yet. And it still isn't. And the price isn't feasible for a video game console, as demonstrated by a holy ****ing shit are you kidding me price tag of the PS3.

They get Kaz Harai to say all of their lies for them, then after he has filled his purpose, Sony can fire him and act like he was responsible. Don't be surprized when he 'steps down'.

When Microsoft does it we criticize them too. It's business, but it's low. They are both full of shit, I for one hate their tactics. It's not necessary to BS people like this. The truth is that Sony and MS both borrow ideas from each other (and Nintendo). In the end this makes better consoles because they add on features the other one has so they can compete. MS has good online service? Sony will try to match that. Sony has backward compatibility? MS will try to match that. To accuse the other of stealing is just stupid. Sony and MS sound more like children arguing on an elementary school playground than adult-run companies.

That pretty much sums up how I feel.

I still can't get over that he had the nerve to say that.

The Sony and Xbox offices must be people in business suits, very serious and all business, but the Nintendo offices have to be a bunch of people walking around in wacky hats, eating candy and driving around in golf carts

this is exactly how I feel.....sony is a huge foundering giant that is basically failing in ever market they keep sticking their fat noses into, aside from PS2.....
UMD has failed.
Their music format, A-TRAC failed.
Their music service failed.
Their audio players suck, and don't sell.
They seriously f***ed up in the DRM department, using stupid rootkits.
Their film division doesn't make good movies (though this has been the hollywood trend...)
PS3 is a bloated, expensive machine that is next to impossible to program for.
They screwed up at a press event by putting laptops on display that were supposedly playing Blu-Ray disc movies....until a reporter pressed the eject button the supposed Blu-Ray drives and found burnt CD-Rs....
Oh, and don't forget about the failure of the Mini Disc....
and how basically sony products are the only thing that use memory sticks....though they're not all that bad.....

Sony can't get it together. But a company that has been producing consumer electronics for 50 years is bound to have its bad decades and good ones I suppose........

i know ms does it too, but i don't think they're quite on the level of 'lame-ness' as sony or they usually have some basis, whether it's small or not.

i can't even pretend i'm suprised at how stupid the things sony are saying are, but they're in quite a tight spot and seem pretty desperate to try and win some people over, i guess nothing works better than flinging poo at your competitors, all they need now is some lame, cheap ad campaign like apple does to win over some lemmings. ;)

I believe I said before that Sony and MS are like smack talking 12-year-olds, and this just reinforces that. I'd really like to see some stats or research that shows that bitching like a little kid is an effective marketing tactic, because otherwise there just making themselves look stupid. But then again, the vast majority of people don't give a crap about the company that makes a product anyway, so how they defend (or in many cases embarass) themselves is pretty irrelevant.

Not to mention getting on stage on E3, playing tennis and enjoying it. (That sold it for me :p)

But seriously, I'd want to work in an office like that :p

I wouldn't mind, but PCPP is so close to home -_-. And if I were in LA, to Doublefine I would go...

Sony is so last-gen.

(pick the nerd joke... pick iiiiiiiiit)

Well I guess Sony are in the mind set that any publicity is good publicity. If people are talking about these idiots, they aren't discussing their competitors.

I'll be staying wall away from anymore Sony threads until the PS3 is actually out.

Who cares? As long as the games are great. Ripping into them and causing more hate is pointless.

Couldn't agree more. Seems Sony have dug themselves into a hole this time. I like to think of it as a cycle. Everyone seems to go around bashing every company when they **** up this is natural. They way I see it Microsoft have a product out and a damned good one, yet Sony and Nintendo don't.

All your comments where right except this one. Mr reporter was drunk and didn't notice the second laptop with the Blue-Ray disc.

As for the PS3s size and cost that partly due to containing a PS2 due to their lack of software emulation just like the PS2 started as. Hardly an excuse though why not make a version without the PS2 chip?

The real problem about Sony is that they had made in a lie back in the 2005 saying that PS3 will allow 7 players which it only allows 4 players, I am not making this up folks.

Still don't believe me? Ask anyone who know about Sony and watch this video,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wzmf0ChL24&search=E3 2006 Sony Conference

I used to be a Sony fanboy, but sadly, the Sony that I loved because of the successful consoles PS1 and PS2 is no longer here anymore...

It can support 7 with an extension much like the PS2 and 4. Thing is I don't think you can easily A: 7 player splitscreen or B: 7 player game with one view. Or is it 7 bluetooth devices I forget still not that big of a deal. Whoo no cables.

Wow. You'd think this was Evil Avatar with all of the Sony-bashing here.

I agree though, most of the stuff any of these mouthpieces says is ridiculous, but whatever you say about them, they are still the ones in the news, being talked about, getting their name into the collective subconscious. Not always a bad thing.

I won't even begin to get into all of the people MS has ripped off for Vista and IE7. Everyone does it. This is how we get great product in the marketplace. Look at Shakespeare: many people wrote revenge tragedies and comdies and histories, but he (they?;) ) perfected the form. Sure all of these groups stand on the shoulders of giants, but what of that? The end result is that something like perfection is achieved in a market innundated with copycats and wannabes.

Let them say whatever the heck they want to say. The proof will be in the machine they finally release this Autumn and (more importantly) in the subsequent games that find a home on their platform.

i think alot of you are thoroughly mistaken when it comes to ripping or just advancing tech.

there will always be a first person/company to do it, but logically, doesn't there have to be ?

everything is going wireless, but ms was the first out the door with it standard, but that doesn't mean the ps3/wii are copying them.

same with ..

- tabbed browsing in browsers.
- online services for consoles (though, ms was the first to have a unified service & i point this out because the ps2 had online ability, as have pass consoles but nowhere near to the extent as xbox live).
- high def (though nintendo isn't here, but ms/sony are).
- 'instanst' search an integral part of computer use (ms with vista or desktop search on xp, apple with spotlight, linux with beagle or whatever).

.. i could go on for a while.

though, things like the gyro-rubbish in the ps3 controller, i would say is too heavily inspired by nintendo's wiimote and it's not really a 'normal' thing in general advancement, so i wouldn't add that to my list [above].

i would like to hear just what they have ripped off, according to you, but if you're going to say aero glass looks like os x, they copied the spotlight icon or comment about ie7 having tabbed browsing, don't bother, i've heard the same dribble a hundred times on the amazing interweb.

i think one of the main reasons people are picking on sony is because they over-promised and aren't delivering.

where have we been let down on the 360 ? i can't remember any massive hype from ms which would be on par with sony, or any 'broken promises' - can anyone remember a broken promise from ms about the x360 ?

Wasn't Nintendo the first console? The dreamcast had it before the PS2, but I thought Nintendo had a modem extension onto there console?

(Below I'm using the arguments that Desrukt provided against Victim in support for Desrukt. Just so theres no confusion.)
What has Microsoft copied for Vista and IE7?
-Tabbed Browing?
Firefox stole it to!

-Extensions?
Microsoft had em, sorry!
idk what else is there to go on about for IE7?

Hey Aero Glass copied Spotlight? Hey you copied me by having a computer!
I'm sorry but all this copying shit is retarded. Just because a company sees a good idea and adds it into there own product.....wtf who cares? If it makes there product better than thats a good thing. You get a better product. Consumers should love the idea of copying.

As a major corporation, Sony's become a bit of a joke. Comments like this are no longer surprising. Good for them.

Sony just needs a little encouragment! A good pat on the back!
*Tommarow*
"Everyone in the world roots Sony on and gives them a big thank you?"

The future does not look good....DOWN WITH SONY!

Ripping things off advances tech. We all know this and are fine with it. Someone has a good idea, someone else modifies it to make it more appealing to a larger audience and voila! a great (seemingly) new product. Then the infringement lawsuits come. Some may stick, some may not. Its always worked that way and it always will. This is really a pointless argument if its even an argument at all.

I only mention MS because they are Sony's main rival right now in console gaming at least. I could have easily have said how Linux is a Unix rip-off or Mac licensed MS programming tools for years or how the Linux community is ripping-off the .NET framework. It all goes hand-in-hand. Consider this example: Spoon-->Shovel-->Backhoe Loader. Basically the same thing, but tweaked as per the needs of their users. There are no more original ideas.

The games, man! The games! The launch window is long gone and there should finally be some top-notch titles in our hands, but there are maybe 2 that are actually good examples of what next-gen games should be. The rest won't be out til late this year or next! I am let down, but I am also not surprised. It will likely be the same with Sony...though maybe not Nintendo from the look of things....

well, now that i know you generally have the same ideas, not really much more to add (though i'm going to address some other points below ;))..

i really think there needs to be more clarification between 'inspired' or 'general advancement' and 'ripping off.'

example of being inspired/general advancement: ms adding tabbed browsing to ie.
example of ripping off: ps3 cont & wiimote.

bad examples, but meh.

i think the main reason i asked you is because no matter what i say on the interweb, i hear daily (and often from the same people) about how ms is ripping off os x, linux or whatever they feel like saying.

i won't argue that there aren't really many 'real' next-gen games (in terms of graphics), but there are alot of good/solid games, like graw, fight night, condemned, oblivion, blazing angels and others.

also, lost planet, gears of war, mass effect and other 'next-gen' should be out before the end of the year or early next year, and i guess that's how long it's taken the developers to become proficient in developing for the x360.

also, if those are the only areas where we have been let down, ms has done a heck of a job. ;)

There does need to be more clarification but it really doesn't matter. The words you use just depend on which side of the fence you're on. Plus bashing MS is easy since they are the market leader in OSes. Just as Sony is the market leader in game consoles. Just as America is the world's only superpower. All of these groups will get the most scrutiny and criticism because they are the easiest target due to their size and influence and always colorful rhetoric--I am talking to you Moore, Allard, Kutagari, Hirai, Rumsfield, Bush!

Yeah, I was thinking of GRAW and Oblivion (which is being fitted for a Sony platform near you soon btw :O) as my prime examples of great tech from the get-go on the 360. The new architectures of the 360 and PS3 are going to take a long time for people to really understand and take full advantage of. And exclusives are going to be less and less since, with dev costs going through the roof, releasing on multiple platforms is the best way to get the most money for yourself. The complete and utter wildcard is the Wii--I can't wait to see it stomp these gorillas!!

graw and oblivion are being going to be available on ps3 too ?! or some other platform ?

the wii shall be awesome but it won't be able to make me completely stop using my 360; wii60 ftw.

the ps3 on the other hand, has nothing for me at the moment, warhawk and some other games would be cool but they seem average at the moment.

Don't know if this has been posted, but I thought it belonged in this thread

He pointed out that the third-party PS1 controller he was using is superior to the PS3 controller. Not only that, he proved that Sony basically ripped off that controller and told everyone at E3 that it is innovative.

lol nice comment.

Are there any Sony fans even left anymore? Abandon ship.

Basically, I thought we all knew Sony was full of shit about the vibration "messing up the tilt". Every ****ing thing that comes out of their mouths is lies. Since I don't believe a word they say, I immediately assumed it had to do with 3 things.

Could be any of these reasons are the REAL reasons PS3 doesn't get vibration controllers:
3) They couldn't make room for the vibration hardware into their controller
2) cutting costs
1) Microsoft and Especially Sony (more units sold - they used it in the PS1 as well) just got the ever living shit sued out of them for stealing the vibration technology in the first place, so Microsoft bought the company so they can continue to use it as they please, and therefore, Sony would have to license the technology from Microsoft - which is the most likely reason they can't have it. The price is too high (paying your competition?) Well, Sony should know all about over-charging, they've been doing it since as long as I can remember, one of my main problems with them - WEEEEEE $35 for an 8 megabyte memory card!! Thats funny, I got 512 megabytes for my PC for that price you ****ing bloodsucking crooks! I know they have to make their money back, losing money on their consoles, but that is 640 times more per megabyte!

So they say the vibration messes up the tilt feature, which the guy from Playstation magazine (PSM) disproved. Therefore it has been proven that they lied again. All they had to say was "we are trying to cut costs down", but they like to just twist things around so they can instead switch the focus from a negative to a positive, by saying "it messes up the tilt" - which in my opinion, is just an incomplete thought and is a worthless feature anyway. Have fun doing loops in your plane and driving your cars into walls trying to use that gimmick.

The vibration works just fine in the Wii controller, and doesn't affect the tilt. And that third party controller from 10 years ago did vibration and tilt just fine (I thought this was supposed to be innovative.. act like you ****ing invented the idea why don't you Sony? so full of shit.

How anyone could be willing to buy anything from a company that lies to the consumers constantly is bewildering. You have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. (Compulsive liars) This is the main problem I ever had with them. I'm sorry, but I can't ****ing stand liars, particularly lies to trick their own fans, to take their money. Thats just inexcusable and unforgivable.

Anything/Everything > Sony

Hahaha! Its too bad you feel that way! There is such a huge amount of gaming goodness that Sony has brought to the community that trying to make a list here would be absurd. Suffice to say that the games that the PS1/PS2 have to offer are easily some of the absolute best ever created. And with such a huge variety of games to choose from, I find it hard to believe that you think everything else out there is better. Oh well. To each his/her own.

I honestly don't care what they lie about as long as the games kick-ass and the HD movies work.

Also why can't Sony implement there own god damn vibration methods... Nintendo did it.
