I've read through the archives and current forum.
I'm not relishing the barrage of 'Buy the Game you f-ing pirate' as several people have pointed out that every once in a while legitimate HL2's have this problem.
This is my case -- Bought from EB (Holiday Collection Pack -- w/ Ep. 1) on Jan 15, 2007.
I installed the game under one user name and had problems with sharedapi--.dll (can't remember the exact dll name). Searched Steampowered.com -- found several solutions, none of which worked. In the mean time, found out that Windows XP Pro, when not connected to a network, removes the Admin login when you add a user and I couldn't do my normal practice of renaming the admin login (doesn't appear). So, created my user account, loaded up steam, still had problems with sharedapi--.dll still. Removed HL2 and HL2: Ep 1(via Steam), inserted the DVD, re-installed, Steam updated the games and everything worked. Prior to the reinstall, steam had to be manually restarted, now it kicks off on boot-up.
Rebooted the machine -- started recieveing No Node Map and AI Disabled -- I understand that there is a problem with some file but that HL2 will rebuild the map -- apparently this isn't being saved after the re-build. I understand that ai_disable 0 will restore the AI, but up to this point, every person has acted somewhat normally -- until 'Sandtraps.' Someone is suppose to show me the way to the underground tunnel, however, now they've stopped moving -- the words come out, but no one moves.
So -- how does one go about solving this problem. I would have preferred to have completely removed the program (Steam, HL2, HL2: ep 1), but there is nothing in the 'add-remove programs' to do that and I didn't feel like running through the registry to remove tons of entries. However, at this point, if that is my only option, then I'll do it. I'm hoping that there is something easier to do though.
