5 YEARS OF WORK! 5 YEARS OF ****ING WORK..
You know damn well why not only Gabe, but any of the Valve Software Team, replied as of yet!

Think about the devastation!
They had the source leak..
Now they have a Beta/Alpha/Pre-Release/Whatever playable game out..

If I were part of the team or in any way with them through the 5 years of this project.
I honestly don't know what I would do/say..
Its just a loss for words..

I feel for Valve, I feel for Gabe, I feel for the community [@ least the part that cares!]

No doubt a part of me wants to play this beta, but I just don't have the heart to backstab such a dedicated company like Valve..
No matter what, no matter when, the final product will be purchased by me!

I hope the hacker go down, and get the biggest beating by a crowbar in the hands of Gabe.

my 2 cents

no way! a sep/oct headcrab making a thread about the source leak? who's ever heard of such a thing!

we have better things to talk about, people
dl the beta. i havent, but then again i have HW.

Alas they knew the risk.

It was a dangerous game to play for having a marketing black-out for five years, blow everyone away at E3, blow their self-stated deadline, then have another marketing black-out til now. Apparently, Demand devastated the Supply of information.

I believe that these hacking acts were more an act of contempt than pure mischief. Unfortunately, I also believe that the hacker(s) belonged to the HL2 fanbase, only willing to take a huge risk for information of this kind. It seems the quote "knowledge is power" has been horribly understated.
As for this "beta", I recommend not to play it solely based on computer security and safety. There are those who add little presents to the package.

Nevertheless it is saddening that Valve must face such grave consequences. I only hope that the resolution comes swift and peaceful.

dude....

the only reason for the delay was for suspected source code leakage.
if the hackers didn't try and steel the engine.
the game would have come out on time.
It is most deffinately the communities fault.
worst people ever...

lol thanks that was a really well informed opinion!
go away!

I am kinda glad that they were hacked. Well, not really but I'm glad they know about it.

Imagine if they went on and realeased the current code, only to have the hackers wreck the multiplayer game by releasing cheats that avoided the security.

Now Valve will re-write that area of code so that the leaked version is rendered useless.

I hope :)

I would never play the beta. Dont wanna ruin the experience for when the full game comes out, nevertheless it is somewhat backstabbing Valve. I supported them all the way in this crisis for them.

The thieves who stole the code are nothing more than common criminals. I will drink a toast to Valve and to the FBI the day I read of the prison sentence.

I will not download anything based on stolen code. In fact, I think it would rock if the FBI started arresting downloaders for receiving stolen property. Of course, that'll never happen.

I suspect that this will hurt sales, but not much. The longer term damage is to the quality of play of the multiplayer. Net play is probably going to be as bad as, if not worse than, the current state of Counter-Strike. Sux.

Playing this leaked version would not mean your backstabbing valve, afterall, your going to buy the game anyways. If anything, it should make Valve happy that you want to waste hours downloading a portion of their game that probably won't even work or will probably be full of viruses that will ruin your computer.

Wait for the game to be released officially. Don't be parasites.

May all who have downloaded this 'beta' have their computers melt a la Indiana Jones.

I like saying fack...it sounds funny. fak

I'll admit, my respect for Microsoft has GREATLY decreased within the past months for these security vulnerabilities.

the beta leak isn't bad, most games have a beta leak, jk3,doom3,halo,etc.

it's the source code which is a real tradegy :'(

I wish there was some way to show these ignorant grunts, these unwashed masses what kind of work goes into making game. Hell, making a game such as Doom 1 would be daunting, and HL-2 is unthinkable. Coding a new engine from the ground up, new models, sounds, textures, maps, the story....it's incredibly depressing to think how Gabe must feel. Poor guy, I wish there was something we could do.

(or who have seen any of the two or three film adaptations :cheese: ... as usual, though, the book was arguably better)

The real disaster is the source code. The beta isn't going to do too much damage as far as sales go, just as the doom3 alpha won't. The source, on the other hand, has the potential to cause a lot more problems.
