you = Gordon? well, not really

No hands in D3? What about here or here ?
I think all games have had hands on their guns, even when they are going for immersion, for 4 reasons:
1. The hand is pretty much a part of the weapon and sometimes a weapon on its own.
2. Since 99% of the time in most FPS's the player is holding a weapon, the hands do not become out of place.
3. Pretty much all games do it like a tradition and all gamers are used to it.
4. Immersion is not a set-in-stone law on what you can and cannot do. Developers do whatever they feel is the best for their game.

By seeing Gordon's hands, it implies you are Gordon. simple as that.

btw check doom3 screenshots--you don't see your hands while holding assault rifle and it doesn't look strange

kkk, so what's the different seeing the gun instead of Gorgons hands and a gun in the same picture? So is it like the gun is floating in the air in doom3, wtf? And haven't you guys ever driven car with just your legs . :x

those things are kinda interesting nevertheless. when i saw F.E.A.R movies, the most suprising moment for me was seeing character's feet and high-kick option later on. just that thing instantly moved this game into "revolutionary" department for me (as somebody mentioned that "seeing your hands" is classic and i agree on that), so that gave a whole lotta new perspective on things. but what helps to identify yourself with the main character more--just no visual/audio info at all (like hl2) or the ability to see your hands/feet and hear yourself speaking or something--that's another topic.

theif 3 you can see your shoulders/legs feet/arms... while in first person its a really nice effect and i cant wait for more games to do it...

another thing i would like to see is a wider field of vision... current games are about 90degrees FOV i want 170degrees like real life...

Is there a point to this thread?

I mean, all games let you see the hands. What? Would you rather see the bugbait pheromones floating?...

Whatever...

I dunno..maybe I'm reading the thread wrong...lol

while looking at the last introducing-the-flashlight screenshot, something occured to me: you can actually see Gordon's hand holding that spores thing. you may ask "what's the big deal" but thinking of it more, isn't it ruining the whole concept of identifying yourself with the main character? i mean you don't hear your voice, see your nose/legs/shadow/reflection/hands while holding small objects (as reported recently) but still you can see "your" hands while holding certain weapons. i think it kinda falls out from the whole concept but maybe i just spent too much time on the sun.

I'm sorry, but you need hands to use weapons. It's called common sense.

The point is that Gordon's face and voice would be noticably different from yours.

Do you think your hands from inside a suit would look different?

Unless you have a claw, it's perfectly consistent with the Valve ethos.

But I have eleven fingers, Gordon's hands completely destroyed the immersion of HL 1 for me... :( :( :(

I have 40 toes, so my feet wouldn't fit into the suit. 20 on each foot :|

Yes, you do spend too much time on the sun. How often do you find yourself staring at your hands thinking "is this really me? Whose hand are these?"
AHAHAHHAHAAHAAHAH SERIOUS LOL

Seeing as you see his hands on guns, you should see them holding the steering wheel of cars and vehicals.

I sure am looking forward to seeing gorden on a bike and having ghost handlebars move from left to right.

REALISM!

Its fantastic.
