here is a brain buster.

im playing counter strike, everythign someone dies in my screen, my screen freezes, for example, lets say i kill somebody, i let go of the button, and its still firing, or lets say someone dies behind a wall this ahppens also, i have major issues with this, this never happened with 1.5, only steam 1.6 did this, but then again it was fine in the begining stages of steam.

sometimes it locks up even during regular navigation in the game. i let go of "a" but it still strafing left, same with all the other keys. you think its a keyboard problem? it does this locking up thing every single time i play CS. does it in blue shift and regular half life. once the freeze was so huge, my computer made a beep, second time this beep has happened, i think the problem got worse. cuss it never beeped before. one long beep.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled, thats not hte issues,

p4 1.6
512 ram
AIW 9000 pro
60 gig, 80% empty
extremely fast cable connection.

please give your advice, even if you think you know something.

1. Disable VPU recover
2. What antivirus are you running? (I had this same issue running Norton SystemWorks 2k3)
3. If you're running Zone Alarm Pro, try write protecting your config.cfg

im not using any anti virus stuff, never have,

i will disable vpu recover, but i before i upgraded, i had a gf2mx400, problem was present with this card too, i dont think this card has cpu recover though. just some info for you guys to work with.

Have you run any memory tests (Prime95/etc)? Best way to check if there's a hardware configuration error of sorts

Expanding on the AV question..
Are you sure you're virus free? A virus could be causing stupid problems.
Same goes for spyware, do you scan for that regularly?
Do you run a selective boot (and do you keep tabs on what starts up regularly)?

i dont think i have a virus, because everything else is fine. other programs run ok, though lately i have had major slow downs of cpu opporations, but i tihnk thats due to a upgrade i did for windows, simple instructions like clearing the history in IE takes whole seconds, where as 2 months ago it was instantaniously, now dont htink im stupid and am trying to clean 100 days of history, and saying it takes long, no not the case at all. something is wronge with this thing, ive reformated my computer about 4 times day after day, still problem has not gone away with the CS freezing.

problem still consists with vpu recover off.

i havent run any memory tests, i dont know how or with what, i have spy ware, but i dont think i have any stuff on my computer such as Gator or shit like that. and i dont konw what selective boot is. im mostly default settings since the day i formate XP, i dont know how to mess with registry or shit, i jus tinstall and uninstall thats all i nkow about computers, so i dont think ive manually ****ed something up.

Quick question before I lecture for a bit. ;) Do you use a USB mouse/keyboard?

Lol, the good spyware tries to make sure you don't know it exists. I highly recommend you buy an antivirus software and download adaware or spybot. Its your cavalier attidute that lets viruses and spyware reign free on the internet. I really think that you may have a virus that is slowing down your computer. That may or may not becausing your problem. I also recommend you installing a firewall on your computer and don't forget your windows updates.

When you uninstall most programs, it doesn't delete everything that the program installed. The most obvious things are like folders or saved games. But most games leave behind registry changes too. This is why older versions of windows (think windows 95) would have to be reinstalled after 1 year of usage. So many programs would make changes to the registry that windows eventually became unstable. Now, that stability problem has been fixed with new versions of windows. But the fact still remains that previous software could still be affecting your machine. Though I doubt that is your problem, this little blurb is just FYI. You may want to state your operating system in your next post.

I have somewhat similar problems like yours on my older games (Half-Life, Quake 2). I haven't tried very hard to find the problem, but I personally feel that it is these USB devices causing all the problems.

Get that antivirus software installed. Its for your own good. ;)

yes, actualy i am on USB devices, i used to us ps/2 before i remember now, i think were on to something, let me try with ps/2 ports,

im using xp pro

Ad-Aware and Spybot are free to you. I regularly turn up malware (and of course tracking cookies) despite being behind a network firewall, a local software firewall, using AV software, and practicing Safe Surfing. (:p)
You are not invincible, especially if you're on a high-speed broadband connection.
How does your computer connect to the Internet anyway? Is it just your network card, then to the modem, then to your ISP?

Now, with all that said, I would not begin to troubleshoot any sort of freezing issue before I tried installing the latest video and sound drivers.

*edit: fixed tags

Backup, format.

It's faster and more effective then defragmentating

ya drivers all are up to date,

no networking here, just regular networkcard to modem to isp

i switched my mouse from usb to ps/2, problem did go away drasticaslly, but still there are traces of it. but not as often lockups happen, both keyboard and mouse are on ps2 connections.

The connection you just described is the most vulnerable kind you could have. You should definitely pay more attention to security.

You might want to look into IRQ conflicts if that reduced your problem.

Its windows XP. I thought XP handles all IRQ's.

Hyenolie - What brand/model is your keyboard and mouse. Did any "special" drivers come with your mouse/keyboard and did you install them?

microsoft inteli 5 button mouse, and intlitype pro internet keyboard,

i have drivres, but they are old, they are on CD came with products. should i install the old ones?

i played DOD today also, man the problem is horrible. i cant ****ing fire a machine gun without it over firing, it lock ups. its horrible.

you think its hte keyboard itself?

No, if it was a hardware problem, it would be acting up all the time.

So what drivers do you have installed in your computer exactly? Did you just plug the mouse/keyboard in to the USB ports and you started playing? Thats what I did.

I am trying to find some commonality that would explain the problems we are having.

ya ive been tring to figure somethign like that out since for ever. since i formated, i just plugged it in and it worked, but i remember downloading drivers from the web, and using those the problem didnt go away.

i think i have my old old disks for the mouse and keyboard.

let me uninstall the drivers and put these old as drivers in. maybe it would work that way.

P.S. i remember now why i went from ps/2 mouse to usb mouse, because this ****ing red light under the mouse wont turn off when the PC is turned off. only usb turns off. my room is a red color in the middle of the night, ifeel like im in hell.

Check this out.

You can also go into bios and there usually is a setting to clear IRQ settings and it will redetect when it reboots. Look in your manual.

i uninstalled drivers from device manager, then i put in intelitype 4.1 problem still there.

i dont know what IRQ is and im not even goona attempt to do anythign with "bios" in the sentence.

heres some ideas and problems

motherboard?
mouse?
keyboard?
drivres?
video card?
game software? i doubt it though its been reinstalled about 1000000000 and 1 times.

you guys know when you press to many keyse on the keyboard it makes a beep.

thats what this is doing. but im not pressing to many keys
only 1 "w" to more forward, and moving the mouse at same time to look around. its freezing in the given comand and continues to do it for a second, if the freeze is long enough it beeps. i swear it sthe same beep from typing when u press to many keys at once. the software must be ****ing up the keyboard and or mouse

what do you guys think and how can i solve it if it is the beep.

by the way this keyboard ive been using for years now. maybe 4.

Really? I'll have to go read my MB manual once I am finished with finals.

I have two finals tommorow than I am finished for this semester. :p

On Tuesday, I will try to figure out the problem for sure. I will let you know what I find out.

thanks, hey how do you upgrade the bios? i dont even know what type of mother board i have.

any suggestions?

i went to my cousins house today, dam his comp was running DOD perfectly at 1600 1200. no freezing problem of the sort. he has a logitec optical mouse, 2 buttons and half desent keyboard with function buttons and shit like that. i dont know why, this problem happens to me.

its irritating because one day long ago it was fine. i uninstalled steam, i put it back after some while and the problem was there since the first day.

you guys think i should test a new keyboard and mouse?

I played around with my computer last night...no luck.

- My bios automatically detects and sets my IRQ's for me. There is no option for me to "reset" them. I could go in to manual mode for my IRQ's, but I am not the biggest fan of that option.

- There was an option in my bios to support USB legacy Mouse. I selected it and it reduced the frequency of my mouse going crazy. But it did not fix the problem. I turned it off until I find out what USB legacy Mouse support really is before I would leave it on.

- I was using Quake 2 as my guinea pig last night, I found out that game has shadows. You just have to alter its cfg file. :)

Other than that, no luck.

Okay, I have noticed that my problem gets worse the longer I play the game.

I have also installed the latest logitech drivers, those didn't help at all. If anything, those logitech drivers screwed up my mouse sensitivity in all of my games. ;(

hehe

Some boards can reset IRQs but others don't have that option. :(
I know my nforce2 board does.
My old VIA KT266 doesn't.

What is an IRQ?

i would reinstall all new drivers / needed sw for kybrd , mouse etc, .. use spybot and anitvirus, run some HW testing benchamarks like sysmark / sandra etc...
also run a utility to check your registry for errors too. check your port speeds, check your USB power config, check your startup file for windows , see if you have a lot of crap running, from windows hit ctrl/alt/del once, this will pull up task mgr, look at the bottom where it says commit charge: should say something like 132/1024 something like that, as long as the first number is not TOO big w/o anything running your ok.
spend some time in task mgr, look at all the tabs at apps, process, performance, etc..
see if anything looks odd..

BTW this could be a straight performance issue that only crops up at maximum performance times, if you are overclocking, test at normal speeds to see if problem clears, also try running game at REAL LOW resoluitons ie.. 640x480 and with all the eye candy off. you could just have your foot down too hard on the gas pedal!
test test test retest...

No this is a problem directly related to older games (from the windows 95 era). I have no problems what so ever if I decide to load up BF:V, UT2K4, or anyother modern game.

I don't overclock. I have all windows updates on my computer, I have norton anti-virus, I have a NAT firewall, and zonealarm (to keep that pesky microsoft messenger at bay), plus I have adaware on my computer too.

My keyboard and mouse uses the drivers contained in Windows XP. I found out what USB legacy Mouse support is, it is so my mouse can work in DOS programs (which I have none :p).

I keep my computer in peak condition (think "Rocky" :D). Any other suggestions let me know. :E

OK then lets work backwards then, windows xp has some emulation modes that let it trick older proggies into thinking they are running on older OS's, try that.

The bottom line may that while HW/SW/OS makers claim that the new stuff we use nowadays is 100% reverse / legacy compatible, some of your old games may NOT work with a current HW/SW/OS configuration without patches that no one will ever write.
the same way your old HW wont work with new SW without patch help
it works both ways, old SW might not work on new HW without a patch also.
Sometimes things just age out.

Get this, Quake 2 runs perfectly when I apply the Windows 95 compatability mode on the exe. Sweet. Problem Solved. Thanks ewilson248

Hynolie - Apply Windows 95 compatability mode to all of your exe/shortcuts. You do this by right clicking on your icon, selecting properties and select the compability tab. You then want to check the box that says "Run this program in compatability mode for" and make sure the drop down box below it says Windows 95. With anyluck it should work for games like Half-Life, CS, and DOD.

i took my keyboard and mouse to my cousins house, and its all working fine, with xp drivres installed, USB plugged in and it played.

i checked his compatibility for his steam shortcut, its not even checked. i will take him mouse and keyboard to my house and i will test there.

hey, what do you want me to do exactly? just go to properties of the steam.exe and make shure it runs compatible with 95? so steam will fix the CS and DOD and almost other game freezing problem??

I forgot about Steam. I won't use steam until HL2 comes out. I just don't like it.

Hmmm...I would try putting the compatability mode on the GCF (or whatever cache files steam uses). Except of putting it on "Windows 95 compatability" mode, put it on "Windows 98/ME Compatability" mode instead. So on the drop down box, select "Windows 98/ME Compatability" see if that works. If it doesn't, try the compatability mode on other game related files.

You want it on Window 98/ME compatability mode so it will allow Half-Life (and its mods) and 32 bit color. Windows 95 compatability mode won't let you.

This fix works for Half-Life and Quake 2 for me personally. Hopefully it will work for you.

omfg look at this, im at my cousins house

hes got a 2.4 p4, 1gig crutial ram, 9800pro 128, excelent cooling.

look at this picture, why isnt it normal? im getting 100 fps, on this comp while that pic was taken i had to crop it, 100kb upload max. what is going on?

P.S. my keyboard and mouse are still doing fine, on this comp,

Man, full of problems aren't we. :)

My first bet is that he has a smartshader enabled in his control panel. Basically, it alters the image to add a special effect after the screen is rendered but before it is displayed on the monitor. You can control this by right clicking on desktop, properties, click settings tab, click advanced, click 3D tab, click custom, click smartshader tab and adjust. Smartshader profiles exist for Direct3D and OpenGL, may sure you check both.

If that isn't the problem, make sure he is using the OpenGL renderer.

If that doesn't fix the problem, download and install the latest Catalyst drivers for his video card at ati.com

Hopefully, one of those should fix your problem.

OMFG GUYES GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!!!!

we fixed the problem, after years of headaches and a week of hardcore posting, the problem is solved

i went to steam folder, and under the type of games, on all the application files, i put them on 98 compatible, if u put steam itself on compatible it gives u an error, i did this and steam kept on loading and loading and loading, then i tried the games itself, it worked fine, i tested DOD its fine.

i still havent tested CS, hopefully that is fine too, but if DOD is fine then CS is fine too, if that was the fix. thanks guys and rock on hl2 forums.

blahblahbha we did it man. **** this problem. we did it.

ok guys a new problem has occured.

the 98 thing solved this problem but now when i type quit in console to exit any game using steam, the hl.exe is still running in the processes. this causes IExplorer timeouts, and if i try to play the game using the steam games, it says its already running, in other words, the game dosent fully exit, screen closes but its still in processes. how do we solve this? put it on 95? or me,2000?

I doubt it that you can fix that problem. Only way to is to do a ctrl alt del every time you exit hl.

I would experiment with Windows 95, Windows 98/ME, and Windows 2000 settings and see which one works the best for you. I can't launch Half-Life in Windows 95 compatability mode, but it may work for you.

In reality you may have to Control-Alt-Delete hl.exe everytime you quit from a steam game. Hopefully, you won't have this problem too much longer because HL2 is close to coming out!!!1111one1!!!
