If you had to choose just one game developer for a top pick, who would it be and why. Personally I would choose vALVE because of their loyality to fans. They pump out one GREAT product after another, and nothing in their games seems rushed. Even now, shipping with Episode 2, will be a new multiplayer game. My runner up would have to be Bethseda because of their work on the elder scrolls series, which I had countless hours of fun with.

Bioware: on avrage they have deliverd me most fun out of any developer.
Sony: Love the fact they aren't afraid to support completly original games, and take chances unlike many companies which play it safe and pumpout clones, rehashes, licenses, or reuse/cameo their main character over and over and over.

My main four are, basically, Naughty Dog, SCEI (Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated), Valve and Polyphony Digital.

No mention of Blizzard?

I like Valve and Blizzard, because they take their time, spend tons of money on games that they work forever on and truly believe in (World of Warcraft cost $70 million to make, according to the guy who made EverQuest, and HL2 took 6 years to make, probably costing a fortune as well), and make a killing because of it. Not many companies can boast such a high-quality practice, but I've heard lots of good things about BioWare, which is probably right up there with them.

Starcraft is tied with Half-Life as my favorite game of all time, but I don't like Blizzard for the sole reason that in the past eight years despite SC's massive commercial success... we've seen no sign of Starcraft 2, except Ghost, which is bullshit anyway.

In no particular order...

Valve
Blizzard
Bioware
Threewave

Valve & Sierra

bcos they both did there parts i the best FPS HalfLife, now they have broke away, they have still managed to produce top games.

sierra was a publisher (didn't develop HL, just distributed) and was bought by vivendi who had that big problem with valve a year or so ago. correct me if i'm wrong.

Capcom.

Capcom for me as well. Hard to pick just one, but what can you do? Damn this thread !

Nearly :)

Nintendo first, then Capcom. Then, way below, everything else.

IO interactive are great devs. The Hitman series is brilliant and I really liked Freedom Fighters, shame they never made a sequel.

I also really like Introversion. Not just for their games, which kick ass, but their whole philosophy about game development.

Yah, IO is great, rockstar fail at San andreas.

Valve, Nintendo, CryTek, and Square (Square Enix, etc.).

All these companies have provided me with countless hours of entertainment.

Valve:
Everything on Steam, as well as continuous mod support.

Nintendo:
NES to Wii, everything has been wonderful. Too many games to name.

CryTek:
While only having developed FarCry and now Crysis, the leaps they have made in the visual department of first person shooters is unprecedented, and they have stayed true to PC gamers.

Square:
Developers of some of THE greatest RPGs ever known to man. Chrono Trigger, the Final Fantasy series, as well as some others.

Valve, ICO Team, Kojima Team, Bioware, Remedy, Naughty Dog, Westwood, N64/SNES era Rare, Rockstar North, and Free Radical are all great. I'd say Kojima Productions is my favorite because MGS is my favorite series.

Valve for sure and not even because they made my favorite FPS (Half-Life) but because I feel I have more of a connection to them. With their weekly updates, awesome development tools, steam (which I actually love), commentary system, and episodic content. I just think they're a unique developer and I'm attracted to that. My other favorite would be HAL Labratories (HALKEN) for the AWESOME Kirby games.

TalonSoft, for Jagged Alliance 2. Valve, well you can all guess why. Blizzard - you almost didnt make it to the list. Give me Star Craft 2 and give it to me now.

Micropose.. I mean they're full of classics!
F-15 Strike Eagle, Pirates(Sid Meier's), Red Storm Rising, Sword of the Samurai, M1 Tank Platoon, Covert Action, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, Formula One Grand Prix, Gunship 2000, Darklands, SubWar 2050, Master of Orion, Colonization and latest but greatest, X-Com UFO Defense!*Old-school taste ftw*

Atleast when it comes to PC devs.

When it comes to console devs, the Top #1 is definitely Kojima Team/Konami.:)

Blizzard, Westwood, Naughtydog, and id.

Edit : Ah yeah, totally forgot about Monolith... they've made some great games.

Konami since they brought me Silent Hill, Valve on the other hand =)

Valve, Westwood, Monolith - how could you all forget this great game producer. As for Id, I've lost respect for them so, out.

DICE (Battlefield series), Valve (Half-Life series), Maxis (Sim City). Blizzard (Diablo & WoW)

As much as I love the pinnacle of square's game releases (6, 7, Tactics etc.), their good output is an extremely low percentage of their overall output. Square put out countless merely average games and some absolutely terrible ones on top of that. Square between about 1994-1998 were probably the world's best developers. I'd have to say that if you take their full life into account though, they're bordering on one of the worst :p

As for me, I'll be predictable and say Valve. Next i'd say Irrational Games, because they consistantly put solid titles out even if they don't rock the world with them all. They do have System Shock II to their name of course, and one brilliant game is more than many developers manage. Here's hoping that Bioshock lives up to its potential.

Aside from that I can't really think of a developer that hasn't let us down at some point. Ion Storm gave us Deus Ex but also gave us... well, all the other crap that Ion Storm ever gave us (Dominion and Daikatana especially, and though Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 aren't quite as crap, they were certainly disappointments). Epic gave us UT2003, and Unreal 1 was only ever slightly above average. Relic gave us Homeworld and some solid games after that, but Homeworld 2 was a pile of crusty arse scrapeings.

My next runner up would be the parker brothers. The parker brothers were revolutionary in their development of the Monopoly series. From throwing the dice to the get out of jail free card, everything was as next generation as it could get.

Nah, they're over-rated. It's clear they were pushed for development time, so rather than expanding the board and developing new content, they simply joined the last square to the first, thus the Parker Bros only revolution was the first known example of copy and paste level design. Plus, rather than developing different graphics for the stages, they simply changed the colour pallette and upped the stats. How cheap is that! The AI was pretty poor too, I mean, there was none. In fact, intelligence of other human characters was pretty low as well, and they didn't develop multiplayer first, they just added vehicles to it!

Blizzard Entertainment.
The best developer of all time.

True story: Epic is based in my town, and about once every 2-3 weeks, someone from their office comes to the grocery store I work at and buys $1200 worth of food. Based on what they buy, it must be awesome to work at Epic. I mean come on, Jimmy Dean sausage at work? Can it get any better?

Anyway, for my favorite developers would be valve and blizzard.

Valve - Day of Defeat, Half Life
Bioware - Neverwinter Nights, KotOR
Monolith - F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins
Lionhead Studios - B&W
DICE - BF2
Novalogic - DF1, DF2, DFLW, DFTFD, DFBHD
Blizzard - Warcraft 3
Bethesda - TES
