I wasn't aware that Hellboy was inspired by Lovecraft.

The "universe" that Hellboy inhabits is mostly ripped straight from Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Mike Mignola of course works in tons of folklore and myths of his own, but the basic context with its horrifying things from beyond all traces right back to HP.
