Developers and publishers who make MMOs need players to keep playing for many months and years in order to make the game profitable. Achieving anything in-game therefore takes a long time and is often referred to as “grinding”. But gamers are still compelled to play the game so as to get their character/s to the next level, and keep up with their friends online.

His name is Craig Smallwood of Hawaii, and the lawsuit is seeking $3 million in damages. The case targets NCSoft for negligence and gross negligence by producing a game that is compulsive to play. Smallwood has logged 20,000 hours playing Lineage II over a 5 year period, and has averaged 11 hours in-game every day. He is claiming he is:

unable to function independently in usual daily activities such as getting up, getting dressed, bathing or communicating with family and friends.

And his penis no longer works either!

Seriously though, it's your fault if you let stuff get that bad. Some people just... well, deal with it. They don't have some stupid notion of being able to sue the company.

Thanks Razy-poo!

I can't even fathom how the judge didn't just throw this out to start. Boggles my mind.

I think you'd have different reactions if they started topping up your coke with nicotine.

The nicotine could use some more coke, though.

I have played tons of hours in videogames and can dress by mysefl whit no problem

*puts underwear on head*

He should just settle for a free copy of Lineage III.

RJMC, I know English is not your first language, but could you please write "with" just once? Just once, so I know you are able. I'll ignore it forever onward. I'll never complain again, and all you have to do is not write "whit" one time.
Sorry for the above ;(

I sympathize with the Hawaiian to some degree though, because there ain't sh*t to do when the travel economy is in its current state.

I wish the judge would have called him a neckbeard and sent him on his way. Maybe a complimentary "deal w/ it".

Won't people finally learn? Getting that ****ed up from a game is your fault, not the developers'. It's like buying a monitor, burning your eyes out and then blame the manufacturer - you bought it, it's your fault you can't read labels that clearly say LCD, not CRT.

Smallwood. Heh.

So? The developer don't gain anything by someone playing 12 hours a day. The opposite even, he consumes more bandwidth, he's more likely to burn out and they go through content faster, meaning you need to produce more of it to keep them happy. An MMO developer is happiest with a casual player. Although, that goes for flat-fee subscription based MMOs, not for micro-transaction MMOs, but I don't know which one Lineage 2 is.

This guy has obviously never played games on Venus yet! (Venus rotates once every 243 Earth days)

The only game that's addicting to me right now is Minecraft.

brb time to get more gunpowder

I don't sympathize whit him at all. Its not like hes trying to leave Hawaii but can't because of the travel industries. Hes not getting out of bed, or socializing with people he knows. The economy doesn't factor in anywhere.

I was guessing that he didn't really have a job or the drive toward higher education to allow him to get a job. Also ...

Luckily I've never really been addicted to a game, except maybe Runescape back in the day. People presume that because I play WoW I am automatically 'addicted' but I get sick of that if I play too much at a time.

Mind you, Starcraft 2 is seeming to have a gripping effect on me...
