Your greatest Half Life moment

Mountain Man said:
My all time favorite was in Opposing Forces. An attack chopper was circling overhead with me scrambling across a courtyard trying desperately to find some cover. I pulled out my rocket launcher and scored a direct hit on the bird but it was still coming after me. I finally spotted a nearby alley and made my way towards it while firing off another rocket. I was pleased to see the chopper erupt in flames after my second rocket found its target, but my satisfaction was shortlived as I realized the chopper's forward momentum was carrying it right towards me, and here I am stuck in this damn alley with no where to run! I turned and ran anyway, and just when I thought it was over, I saw a doorway off the side and ducked into it just as crumbled mass of the chopper slammed into the ground behind me.

This all happened in under 10 seconds, but it was one of the most awesome emergent gaming experiences I've ever had.
Where the hell was that? Between the mortar field and the parking complex?

what happens after in op 4?
Shephard walks in just as Gordon leaves, and then the room blows up and starts falling apart. So Shephard gets in a fight with the controllers before escaping through a portal.

Also, best moment:
Going through on hard and seeing how many scientists I could save.
(You'd be surprised how many scripted sequences you can alter. Nearly everyone can be saved. :))

The fifth time I fought the Gonarch. The previous four times, I hid and sniped, but this time I was like 'screw that!' and just ran out with a magnum.
It works so much better that way. :D

Outrunning the garg. I was like scared poopless the entire way down to the main power station, and then I realised he wasn't even there.

Edit: Yup, Varsity, that's most likely it. That was the only evil chopper in OP4, if I recall.

I jumped every time I saw a headcrab fly at me inside a vent. Those were some great moments right there.

my favorite scene i will never forget, was the dam, with the helicopter flying over your head, everytime it flew over, i duck in the water so they would'nt see me, it took me 10 min to cross that water, the most intense i can remember from HL1, now i cross that thing in less then a min. :p, but when i played it the first time.. o boy :) i loved it alot, and the headcrab jumping up out of the vent, scared the shit out of me to, i loved about every indoor scene of the game, the one thing i hated was Zen/Xen ? ;p

there's so many to pick from. tense moments. um. One tense moment for me was the part where you walk across the icey walkway over the pool of water with the two ichythosaurs. trying to get across that slipping then jumping through the hole in the grating, knowing the second i fall into the water those two beasts would attack.

another tense moment was in op4. the part where you are in the sewers and fight the big things that fire the red plasma at you, and the little guys that shoot teh stakes at you in the pitch black maze. getting through that is crazy if you're low on ammo and life hehe.

Oh and those damned headcrabs. the one on the cliff in the pipe. after getting through that area, that headcrab scared the holy snot out of me and made me jump back off the cliff to my doom grr. good stuff.

Another one that scared the crap out of me was in op4. It was the first time I encountered the second level hcrab zombie, the big one wiht the biting chest. I hadn't seen it, but i heard it, turned around to see the thing right in my face. that scared the schnitzel outa me too. did the good ol mouse jerk and ended up looking at the ceiling before i composed myself and killed it.

oh and the part before you finally make it to the surface, when you have to release the encapsulated xen warrior, before you activate the 4 stages of the laser... for some reason with the lights going out and that thing comign after me was tense.

The first time I met a headcrab... I ran like a little girl. ;)

Watching the helicopters fight your enemies... the icthy at the Dam in HL1 and chopper vs Voltigore in OpFor.
The helicopter part of OpFor rocked, there was a nice tempting dark room with health packs in it I was going to shoot rockets from - a second after I got in the shock trooper hiding there hit me with a spore grenade and opened fire.... good stuff.

The part of Decay where you go through the labs where they performed experiments on Xenian rocked too, the headless zombie with a dissected headcrab beside it was quite creepy.

ANOMALOUS MATERIALS/ WELCOME TO BLACK MESA

ok first of all who all agree with me that not only is half life the best game ever made, but half life : uplink is the best demo ever made. it captures the essence of half life with brilliant scripted events and combat situations. i played it a long time after finishing half life and it brought back a bit of the magic.

the memorable moments - all I can remember

the train ride, absolutely awesome with the robot the radioactive goo, the helicopter.

the conversation before entering the test chamber ( we have assured the administrator nothing will go wrong, well i dont know how u can say all that, gordon doesnt need to know all this, he's a highly trained professional)

the dream sequence after the cascade, the breathing sound.

UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES

the falling elevator

the part after taht with the lasers cutting ppl, the alarm sound everything was incredibly scary

the first headcrab, when uve no idea what to do, and u have no weapons.

first zombie esp. in hard it manages to kill the guard n comes after u.

the first alien slave.

the scientist who keeps popping out of the ventilator (?) and going back in

the stream of headcrabs who call on you as you go down the lift.

first bullsquid

OFFICE COMPLEX

zapping headcrabs

where u get the shotgun

battling huge number of aslaves in the complex

freezer with the galloping bullsuid

near the end when the zombie throws someone thru a glass wall

the scientist hanging on for dear life as you climb down to the elevator

WE'VE GOT HOSTILES

sentry guns and lasers, had lot of fun beating them

the slippery place where u turn round a corner sliding and a sentry gun starts firing

the scientist who is happy to see the military, only to get murdered.

first fight with the marines.

the osprey dropping unlimited marines down the shaft (really cool)

BLAST PIT

seeing the tentacle for the first time, snatching the scientist, i cudnt dare walk down the room for some time

creeping past the tentacles wearing headphones :p, the banging noise when it kills you.

the huge fan u use to fly up

the scientist near the power switches who erfuses to go anywhere

the rusty pipe collapsing in the end.

POWER UP

first sight of gargantua, murdering marines

some incredible fights with the marines

going to switch on the main power with the gargantua chasing you

ON A RAIL (incredible level)

really all the encounters with enemies, brilliantly thought out

where your railcar starts rising and marines shoot at you

the marines with missile launchers

the oh so irritating box puzle before launching the rocket

launching the rocket

APPREHENSION

suddenly you find a bigger, well protected railcar and are zooming happily on it, and some marines blast the rails and you go deep in water, real coolnes.

frantically searching for a place to catch your breath while in water

first ichthyosaur, bloody scary.

the slippery place with two ichthyosaurs

assassins, how they kill the guard and then the fight with them.

the getting captured part and dragging scene (body what body)

RESIDUE PROCESSING

hmm nothing really memorable here, probably the least interesting level.

QUESTIONABLE ETHICS

first alien grunt you meet, and killing him with whatever you have left, magnum bullets, and glock bullets and crowbar.

zapping headcrabs in the labs.

fighting marines with whatever little ammo u have, for the first 3-4 its like kill one, take his ammo n kill next etc.

( you dont have this problem if u find the secret stach in residue processing, but it was real fun this way)

some more cool encounters
the gauss gun scene (overcharge? what do you mean overcharge)

SURFACE TENSION

what can i say, the most incredible level, full of memorable moments.

the first scene with the helicopter overhead, the fish in the water. real scary to go in the water, and somehow the helicopter took ages to kill the fish.

helicopter no. 2 ( i shto it down and it fell on top of me, really amazing. somebody else hada similar experience here i think.

the cliffside, first sight when the aircraft goes past. way cool. and as you peep out, the sentry gun starts shooting at you.

the headcrab as you reenter a new pipe, scared the crap out of me and i fell over the cliff (.

the big marine fight after taht, one of the best.

airdropping alien grunt.

the almost dead guard before the minefield.

the room wired with explosives and meetign a headcrabs there, when youre utterly scared that theyll blow up the room, but ur scaered to shoot them thinking taht might also disturb something

when u come out after getting the hornet gun, the tank vs grunt encounter

the room full of ammo (lovely stuff) esp if u switch on the light which shines on it.

the osprey again dropping unlimited marines.

going down a shaft only to meet snarks head on.

the marines shooting, light thru the tunnel thing (already mentioned)

blasting marines with the cannon outside.
the fake tank (i emptied my gauss on it :p)

the satchel in the tunnel, crawl for your life part.

the gargantua, overturning cars, running away from him and calling the airstrike. absolutely incredible.

FORGET ABT FREEMAN

falling ceiling in forget abt freeman

the huge fight near the endof the level b/w marines n aliens

LAMBDA CORE

assassins: the second encounter, nuff said.

conversation with scientist who lets you in the core ( we drew straws to see who will stay back and i drew the shortest one.) typical dry dark half life 2 humour. ownage.

scientist picks up shotgun then puts it down as he recognises you.

shooting alien controllers, waiting for the teleporterto open.

XEN

first sight of xen.

first encounter with little light plants taht dont like u.

GONARCH's LAIR

seeingl lots of ammo and power running towards it only to hear a funny noise. turn around to seea giant shelob like creature. scary.

INTERLOPER

encounter with gargantua.

teleporting to barrel factory. its eerie when the slaves ignore you.

XEN(2)

hearing all voices in your head as you approach nihilanth. cool touch.

NIHILANTH

final conversation with gman. absolutely incredible. best ending ever.

phew. thats all i can remember.

I find it interesting how the "Boss" (the thing that is supposed to be the cherry on the cake, if you will) was one of the least compelling moments in the game.

Great post egon! You've listed all the major highlights of the game in one post, including some of the moments that I had forgotten.

I didn't realise that you fight 3 Gargantuas in the game
1st in Power Up
2nd in Surface Tension (my personal favorite)
3rd in Interpolar

I also appreciate the pacing in Half-Life, mainly with introducing and including certain enemies and weapons per level. When old creatures are getting boring or are too easy to kill, they'll introduce a new monster to fight; add a cool weapon, and change the gameplay slightly to keep the experience engaging and avoid it becoming stale.

Man. . . it didn't seem like it went that fast when I first played it.
I was like 12 years old when I did first play it and it scared me real good. I took me awhile to beat it too. That's probably because it was my first fps and I was using the arrow keys at first. Silly me. Then when I used the mouse everything seemed alot easier. :) Of course, I had to quicksave/quickload like crazy before I made the switch.

Haha, replaying it is bringing back alot of memories.

My part(s) were when i beat the ass out of the final boss, and gman at the end
