Among other things, I was tasked with designing the main character Rachel. Considering you'll be dealing with her a considerable amount during the game, I'd like your input on what works and what doesn't in terms of her character design.

Keep in mind, certain features must stay put, ie. long hair, nice figure, pajamas, as this is what the mod leader requested.

Also, I've been asked to make her appear more "innocent." I have an idea on how to do this, apart from her "Back off!" pose and the irritated look on her face. Again, your input is welcomed.

Here she is:

Nice drawing. Keep pushing it. How about some close-ups of her face, with different expressions. It would be a great way to flesh out her personality.

Nice work. It appears as if she is a bit of a tomboy with her baggy, comfortable clothes and a kinda blank and irritated facial expression. A good main character to build upon. Keep it up. Your work is especially good.

She's actually wearing pajamas, hence the comfortable (fleece?) pants. I considered giving her a traditional, once-piece silk get-up, but it just seemed goofy to me. If I were a zombie or what-have-you, I'd crack up seeing someone wearing pajamas like that holding an M-16 and sporting a nasty grin.

Thanks for the input.

Damn nice drawing skills, and all you use for these are those cheap bic mechanical pencils?

Yep! They can be a little clunky and tend to smudge when I really don't want them to, but for pre-production concept art, they work great.

ok first of all, very nice and clean.
i have two things i would see changed
first, the eyes and the mount...they just dont seem very "right"... even though if its supposed to be anime, or sumthin, it doesnt look right(might be the nose that too inmarked actually...)

thrid, the trousers, at the bottom, dont looks too good...i would make some more folds, and make it so you can see the other side, thats behind her foot...! :)

cheap mechanical pencils rule!, I only use them, i also used them for my post apocalyptic knight drawing. I love them

ok now with out the top lol and an extra "x" on her shirt first
joke
ok very nice work quite aniimeish may i ask why a girl in pajamas would be seen hanging round guys with big guns?

edit: btw just want to learn more aobut drawing in general. that is the final after u had erased the sketchy lines and cleaned it up umm...right? or did you draw it like that?
are u going to ink it?

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what that thing on her shirt is.

The "anime-ish" looks is intentional. I'm trying to find a nice line between realism and anime: her body is realistically proportioned while her face has that soft, washed-out look associated with anime. Then, of course, there are her larger-than-normal eyes. As far as her wearing pajamas goes, if you take a look at the what's been released of the Hell Blaze story so far, you'll see that the game starts with her waking up. So, pajamas are appropriate in this case.

I actually used to be a very sketchy drawer. Of course, this always lead to art teachers scolding me for doing so. Today, I've learned how to control my lines from the start. My lines are definitely lighter than what you see now, however. This allows any mistakes I make to be corrected without leaving a large smudge from the eraser. Once the initial drawing is complete, I go back over the lines: lines that are in shadow become darker and thicker. This help lends depth to line drawings that, otherwise, would look flat.

As for inking, since this is merely a concept drawing, I'll leave it as it is. There's still some aspects of it that I need to work out. Once I finish the slew of concepts I've been assigned, among other things, I'll create some more refined promotion images. Those will probably be inked so I can scan them into a computer.

I'm impressed with anybody that has good line abilities. I have always been a sketcher, and have too shaky a hand to produce nice lines, without alot of work. I work mainly with bocks of value - and lose the lineart more and more. Since I've been doing digital art with my Wacom and Photoshop, I haven't touched pencil and paper. Praise Photoshop, Wacom, and Ctrl-Z.

Ha, ha! I remember when, a few years ago, I first got into digital art. I actually began neglecting the good ol' pen and paper for the mouse and keyboard. When I finally began drawing "full-time" again, I quickly realized that my skills had deteriorated immensely. Wow, that was quite a scare!

In any case, I really need to pick up a Wacom tablet. I hope the 4x5 version allows me enough space to work. I'd rather not plop down $200...
