When was the most tense time while playing a Half life game? Like a moment which generally made you go, "OH SHIT!". For me, it was definatley in half life 2, in Follow Freeman, when you had just been fighting the bunch of striders outside that building, and then go down the stairs into that tunnel, just walking innocently along, then BANG! a strider crashes through the wreckage right behind you, never have i jumped out of my seat like that in a game.

It used to be the elevator battle in Ep1 until Valve lamed it with an update.

Ravenholm i have to say
Most of the level
Oh and Our Benefactors if you fall off the edge

Power Up.

"Oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me he's right behind me!"

A few off the top of my head:

1. Any time when you're in the silo with the tentacle in "Blast Pit" in HL1.

2. Any section with an Icthyosaur(sp?) in HL1.

3. The entire section in Ravenholm between meeting fast zombies for the first time and getting to Grigori's church.

4. The Antlion section of Sandtraps before you reach the Vort camp.(Not really tense gameplay-wise but the atmosphere is awesome)

5. The pitch-black parts of Low Life in Episode One.(first time through anyway)

6. The Antlion Guardian chase in Episode Two.

Thats another one that freaked me out
Swimming in HL1 and all of a sudden BOOM theres this huge as alien fish taking a bite out of your head

I remember the first time I had the antlion guardian chasing me and I was very scared :(

HL2:
-Route Canal (Manhack parts)
-Ravenholm (later parts)
-Nova Prospekt (2nd turret defense)
-Follow Freeman (strider battles)

EP1:
-Citadel (the moment you arrive in a collapsing corridors)
-Lowlife (Elevator Battle)
-Attic gunship fight (not entirely stressful but EPIC)

EP2:
-Antlion Shaft Defense with Griggs and Shackly (or whatever they are called) especially when vortiguants arrive
-Ambushes in Riding Shotgun and Under The Radar
-Last Strider Battle
-Ending

Half Life One-
When I saw the security guard get chopped by the tentacle in Blast Pit
The second i beat nihilanth

Opposing Force-
That f***ing pit worm

Half Life 2-
Ravenholm It took me forever to find out that they are on unlimited spawn
The Strider attacts with the rebels

Half Life 2 Episode 1-
The pitch black parts on lowlife
The last strider battle
The beginning part when you arrive in the citidel

Half Life 2 Episode 2-
When i saw the Aperture Science sign on the borealis
The epic antlion battle with the vorts and the other two guys
The antlion chase in this vortal coil
The last battle with the hunters and the striders

When the Antlion Guard chases me
When the Gargantua chases me
When the Ichy chases me

As you can see, Valve loves to chase the player with all kinds of monsters.

First playthrough, running from the Blast Pit tentacles in HL, definitely. I was like ten years old and I about shit my pants when the security guard got gibbed by a huge black talon bigger than him on the end of a long green tentacle, and I did shit my pants when I realized there were more than one.

Antlion queen or whatever chase scene. I kept going D: at the close encounters.

I had a very tense time once on HL2DM. It was on a custom map based on the Water Hazard map where you can hear Breen giving a speech to Civil Protection about you in an APC depot. There's a combine base and a rebel base. I was on the combine team and I managed to infiltrate the rebel's base. I stole the crossbow (only spawned in the rebel base) and started killing them from inside their own base (not spawn-killing though). It was really fun and so tense because I was continously watching my back for enemies.

My first Hunter fight.

Jesus, I had to like, take a moment to just chill and hit the dead hunters a few times with my crowbar.

Best. FPS. Fight. Ever.

HL2:

EP2:
-Antlion Shaft Defense with Griggs and Shackly (or whatever they are called) especially when vortiguants arrive
-Ambushes in Riding Shotgun and Under The Radar
-Last Strider Battle
-Ending

this.

when Aylx was shanked by the hunter, I saw the thing the entire time I got to the village, and I thought it was going to kill me, I was shouting profanities that would make a sailing blind carpenter turn his head in shame at the screen.

I'll never forget the first time I played the first bit of HL2, running over rooftops while being shot at, get inside, down the stairs, oh crap bad guys, back up the stairs, oh shit they broke, turn around, BAM baton in the face.
That was tense.

HL1
The Ichthyasaurs (hey! I think I spelled it right!)
The fact that in my 10 years of owning the game, I have yet to beet it without cheats
cliffs area of HL1

Op Force
The Ichthyasaurs
The part where you're in some type of sewer system and there are like, 8 of those Race-X antlion guardian sized thing's (I completed the entire game w/out cheats, but after several tries, I finnaly decided to Godmode through that part
The pit worm, of course

Blue Shift
The defence of the generater thing In Xen

HL2
The first time I saw the Ichthyasaur During the teleport sequence.
The car vs train part on the bridge (the first time)
Seeing the Fast Zombies In the distance jumping across the roofs at ravenholm, then one jumps out of the shadows into your face. :shivers:
First Encounter with the Antlion guardian
When you're just outside of Nova Prospekt, after you climb up the hill, and the sewer drain pipe has a fast zombie Waiting. I nearly jumped off the cliff! (reminded me of the cliffs area of HL1 when there's a headcrab inside the drainpipe

HL2 :Ep1
The first time a zombine charges you.
when you have to manuver around the giant ball of radioactivity
Elevator battle
Seeing the rebels run by you and Alyx and dont notice you (after the elevaor)
The destructable house gunship battle

Ep 2
Alyx's near-death expieriance
The antlion Queen run and hide part
The zombie part as you get the car
The bridge collapse (both of 'em)
The ending battle
The endof the game ;(

Btw, what were the differences before and after the update with the elevator battle, PimpinPenguin?

Power Up.

"Oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me he's right behind me!"

--ditto, & the 1st thing I remember off the top of my head! I hated him, & his twin brother on surface tension! Run-away! Run-away!

--Various moments with the marines (one can forget how great their "AI" was back then)

--Something about the way Gonad lumbered around always gave me the willies[sic] if he came too close

--the name escapes me but those bug bait things you carry & throw & they scuttle about always had a degree of tension with me,

--and oh yeah, the classic beastie in Blasp Pit

--2 more final things, trying to avoid all those trip wires set up around that big bomb & turning off that whizzy, spinning blade thing that traps the scientists at the end of Questionable Ethics

Power Up.

"Oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me oh shit he's behind me he's right behind me!"
THIS.

Seriously, I fear very little if I'm facing it and fighting it, but if I'm running away and it's right behind me, I freak out.

Pretty much any time that involved darkness and zombies (especially the first time).
Pretty much any time that involved running away from a massive monster/chopper (I was actually jumping up and down in my chair during the Ep2 antlion chase, fuelled by pure adrenaline and the fear of becoming part of the decorative bloodstains on the walls).
The first hunter battle.
The first time playing through the silo defence in Ep2. The alarms were going off for so long, I thought I was such a goner.

I'll never forget the first time I played the first bit of HL2, running over rooftops while being shot at, get inside, down the stairs, oh crap bad guys, back up the stairs, oh shit they broke, turn around, BAM baton in the face.
That was tense.

Man that was so ****ing crazy. I thought I did something wrong I was so mad.

The other extremely tense times were when I was trying to figure out wtf to do on the bridge to get the car over in episode 2. I got so mad I just drove the car off the bridge before i figured it out XD

And then the last would have to be, when you had to defend white forrest rocket facility, all of thows striders appeared. I would be trying to stick them with the bomb and those little monsters would come up and ram be like a rhino sending me flying. ^_^

Tentacles being 10 or so with them = bad combination, first time i saw the blue beast in "power up". running and having the huge steps right behind me. I freaked out and was actually saying "RUN FASTER, FAAAAAASTER!

I hate it when Im playing halfway after killing a whole hoard of Zombies then when I turn around I see Alyx or any other npc staring at you. Its f'n scary.

The Antlion chase, its scary how when you turn you see a big Antlion chasing you and your desperate for cover. The numerous Antlion battles before the chase were good but because of this incident, I only played this part of Episode 2 twice. (Skipped this chapter most of the time)

definatly The antlion chase in this vortal coil

The first and second chopper battles in HL2. Also any part in Ravenholm when I was out-numbered by zombies. Oh, and the first antlion guard fight in Nova Prospekt.

The gargs in HL1, fast zombies in HL2, ending in EP1 and tunnels in EP2.
