In this thread, post your favorite english papers (that you wrote). This is mine. From my creative writing class, did it last week.
The first time I saw him was a few weeks ago. I had just walked up to the roof of my building so that I could dump the piss buckets over the edge. After I dumped them out, I noticed the movement down the street. He had come out of the underground building, the same one I had been in when everyone disappeared. He was staggering around, looking dazed. This normally wouldn't have struck me as odd, since it's just typical zombie behavior, but there was something different about this one. I grabbed my empty buckets and hurried down to my room. I had all my equipment in there, and it gave a good view right down the street to the underground building. I set the buckets down on the floor and grabbed the binoculars off the window sill.
Nothing in the town moved anymore, so it didn't take my eyes long to pick out the shambling man making his way down the street. As I watched him, I felt something eerie wash over me. This one was different. I couldn't figure out what was different about him, he seemed to act like all the rest, but there was definitely something else to him. I watched his movements as he continued to walk the empty streets. He moved slowly and wearily from one building to the next, often throwing himself against the windows of the shops and looking inside. No doubt, he was looking for a person to eat. I was the only one left though, I have been for years.
Its strange though, normally the zombies don't walk around during the day time. Often they'll just stand still in the abandoned shops in which they have gathered. Is it possible that I am seeing the first of a new breed of zombie? I had to find out. I ran to the next room down the hall where I stored all the weapons I had found, and I equipped myself with a police issue shotgun. This weapon had proved itself useful against zombies before, and no doubt it would be able to take out this new one. Once I had gotten my gear together, I hurried down the several flights of stairs and out to the street.
I had several blocks to go, so I started jogging in the direction of where I saw him last. The other zombies wouldn't be out yet, so I could move quickly. I knew which buildings the zombies gathered in, and so as I ran past a few of them I peered in through the windows to make sure they weren't starting to move. And there they are, standing stiff as a board among the racks of merchandise left over from before the incident. I picked up my pace, reassured that this new zombie hadn't woken the others yet. By the time I made it to where the man had been, I was breathing heavily. I slowed a walk and I began my search for the new zombie. Sticking close to the walls of the buildings I made my way from one street to the next.
I had spent about an hour or so looking for him, but I couldn't find any trace of him. After another half hour I looked up into the sky and noticed that there were storm clouds forming on the horizon. I knew I would have to cut my search short. Anytime it got dark, the zombies started roaming, and it was best if I was back in my building when that happened. Disappointed, I started my jog back to my base. I made it only two blocks before I heard a loud crash from a building behind me. Startled, I threw myself up against the nearest wall and slung my shotgun up to ready position. I looked toward where the sound had come from. It was the abandoned department store. I had gone in there only once before, and I nearly lost my life because of it. Zombies were everywhere inside. I watched the front of the building for a few minutes, waiting for something to happen. When nothing came out the doors I started walking towards the front. I ran up to the wall and leaned my head around so I could see in through the windows.
I could see the zombies, but they were still just standing there. I looked back up to the sky, there was still a few minutes left of daylight before they would start moving. Just as I was about to let it go and start back home I heard another crash. This time it was followed by a hideously loud scream. It was so loud and frightening that I had to drop my shotgun and cover my ears. When it stopped I looked back through the window, but this time there was something moving in the far back of the building. I quickly grabbed my shotgun off the ground, but when I stood back up, he was out of sight. That warm eerie feeling came over me again, and I knew I had to confront this new monster. I made my way slowly through the front door. I sneaked along the walls, using the racks of clothing as cover. I inched towards the back, moving as slow and quiet as I could. The closer I got to him, the stranger and stranger I felt. My heart was beating harder, my brain getting clouded. I can't remember the last time I felt like this, but I know Ive felt it before. I can finally see him. He is sitting on the ground, leaning against a counter. I see him sitting there, and I can't move. I fumble with the shotgun, trying to load in the shells, but I drop more of them than I actually load. I am more frightened than I have ever been in my life. That strange warm feeling is rushing through my body, and I don't know what to make of it. The whole place grows darker. The storm clouds have covered the sky now.
I can't stay here any longer. I know what I have to do, but my body is paralyzed. I can hear the rain, its pouring already. The zombies, they're starting to move now. I have to leave. I have to leave now. A sudden bright bright flash lights up the room, and a loud crack of thunder pierces the sound of rain pounding on the roof. I make a break for it. I start running towards the man, fumbling with the shotgun. He looks over at me, but his face is washed out as another flash of lightning blinds me. I shut my eyes from the light, and I slam my shoulder into something that sends me spinning to the ground. I look back at what I ran into, and see a large human shape falling towards me. It lands on the ground next to me as the next crash of thunder screams through the store. The zombie is still flailing on the ground as I aim my shotgun at it and pull the trigger. The head blows off, leaving only a dusty mist of colorless blood hanging in the air. I am scrambling to my feet when I notice that the man is running for the door. He's faster than all the others, but this only drives me more. I chase after him. I know I can't let this him escape. He crashes through the front door, but the force of it causes him to tumble out onto the street. Before he can pick himself up again, I am standing over him, my weapon sighted on his head. Another flash of lightning streaks the sky, and I can hear him groaning and screaming. He has given up trying to escape, and is instead writhing on the ground as he yells his gibberish at me. He knows what's coming, and I am all too happy to give it to him.
I hesitate. My head is clouded, and that strange feeling is overwhelming. What is this feeling? I stare at him, finger still on the trigger. Hes reaching his hand out to me, his voice is quieted. I realize what he is doing. He is pleading for me to spare his life, and for a second I lower my weapon. Then another crack of thunder breaks me from the trance. I reset my aim, and I pull the trigger.
I stand there in the rain, looking at his body. Things begin to return to normal. My heart eases its pace, my mind becomes clear again. That strange feeling fades away. I look behind me, and back into the store. Nothing inside is moving now. Everything is back to normal.
No, something is different. Something is wrong. I don't feel the same as I did before. I haven't felt this way in years though. I look back at the corpse by my feet. He was different already. Every zombie before had blown completely apart when shot, leaving only a dusty remainder. This one though, hes still there, and the blood is a thick liquid. Nostalgia, that's what I had felt before. Everything starts to crumble around me. I turn around and walk back inside the store. I walk straight up to the first zombie I see. Hes a pale, white skinned zombie with a baseball cap, a neatly pressed collared shirt and a pair of shorts. Hes just standing there, as if hes waiting for his picture to be taken. I push him in the chest lightly, and he falls over. By the time I hear the hollow thud, tears are already streaming down my face. I'm alone again.
