Asian giants Japan, China and India are engaged in a race to map lunar resources and make the moon a platform to explore planets beyond, amid a renewed burst of global space activity.

Japan flagged off the Asian lunar race on September 14 when it successfully launched its first lunar orbiter. China plans to launch its own moon probe before the end of the year, followed by India in the first half of 2008.

Erm... odd.

""The moon is no longer a place for us to visit," said JAXA's Tachikawa. "We should consider inhabiting and exploiting it." "

Funny, the rest of the world views the US as an occupying force and warmonger, yet nobody seems to care if Asian nations want to take over other planets?? And exploit them??

Downright scary.

Oh, and in case anyone forgot... we got there first, so way to catch up.

Uh, first off, their not "taking over worlds" the space treaty says that space belongs to no man. Second, the US has had plenty of chances to conalise the moon - if it wasn't busy fighting pointless wars then it could have a long time ago. Third, I'm sure the US, once it see's the east - shock - doing better at space travel than they are, they'll also go for the moon :O

The thing is, the east, especially japan, aren't as war-mongering as us westerners and so they get useful things done. I say "gogogogogogo"

We may have 2001: A space oddessy within our lifetimes, even if only just, I don't care. It will ****ing rock.

We need: A technocracy. Space conolisation. RMJC clones. And dancing bananas. Now.

no you didnt, you visited a studio made to look like the moon somewhere near Burbank, propaganda ftl (btw Saddam didnt have WMD) ..cant wait for those asians to NOT find your flag flapping in the non-existant wind

That would be so funny (and shocking). Japanese guy: "Hey, wheres the american flag?"

It's "colonize", but.. whatever. I have no issues with anyone wanting to colonize the moon, Mars, Pluto, Deep Space Nine, anywhere...I DO have an issue with a supposedly US-allied country using the term "exploiting" as if that's somehow...okay. Haven't we "exploited" Earth just about enough? How awesome has that turned out?

Great idea, we've reached the ends of the Earth... let's go get the big glowing orb of cheese for all it's worth. Rocket scientists. They think they're so smart. Harumph.

Oh, and to all the conspiracy theorists re: US landing on the moon.... go back to your bunkers, you forgot your tinfoil cap. I can read your mind. Seriously. Don't worry though, it only took a second. There wasn't much there.

Living on the moon makes less sense than living on Antarctica. The only real purpose to go there is research. You'd have to be mad to think about settling there.

Planets that are potentially hospitable, such as Mars, are a different matter however.

The Red Planet you mean?

Colonizing the moon would simply be an exercise in extra-terrestial colonisation.

I've actually had a rather cool idea: seeing as the lunar gravity is much, much lower than earth's, wouldn't it be possible (well, more efficient) to create a gigantic spacecraft-building-station there instead of on earth?

Building in orbit is better.

You still have to get your spaceship parts from Earth to the moon anyway.

Where's your god now

what if god is the moon!

moon colonizer: we finally arrived! in the moon! start the soft landing rockets
*shroooooo*
god(moon): ow my ass stop that*trows meteorite that impacts earth and destroy*
god:woopsie...well they would have destroyed it anyway so meh

Asian astronaut 1: "Hey, wheres the american flag?"

Asian astronaut 2: "like all their other shoddy merchandise it fell apart, ah-ha, ah-ho, hahahahahah"

Asian astronaut 3: "shut up and keep running those cia space ships are trying to kill us so we dont bring the non existant flag back to the earth"

Well, it was probably made in China after all. :)

I've learned something today.

Space is racist as hell.

I'm pretty certain stern was joking...right? Right?

Shh - Piglet, start to question Stern and then he'll be able to read your mind, me can go through 6 layers of tinfoil. That's why he always wins in rants...

But this should be good - USA fighting wars and the rest of the world going back into space.
