I'd rather ride in a plane than a blimp, anyway, if for no other reason than I feel more comfortable in planes. Not because of the Hindenburg disaster, or because of any doubts about the crafts themselves, but planes are familiar.

I remember seeing a documentary on the Discovery channel about 2 companies competing to make a high tech transport airship. And the idea is good. It would be safer, if the engines go out for instance it won't crash. It would be able to transport payloads much larger than current transport planes can. Also overall it would be cheaper, requiring less fuel to operate.

Well put.. I also saw this documentary. Blimps do have a potential for extremely heavy lifting jobs and the cost (beyond initial production) are significantly less than airplanes and more versatile than traditional freight.

If push comes to shove with the global warming, I think this will be plausible. As of at this second, though, I don't think it will grow, due to the loss of profit I think it would generate. Unless they can do this whole thing cheap. As of right now, Planes aren't expensive, and provide great revenue. And fastness!

If I recall, Boeing made the 747F only because an airline owner said in just a few years everybody would be travelling via supersonic airliner, and the slower jets would be relegated to freight...
