a return of the airship?

The concept art looks rather ridiculous.

I'd rather ride in a plane than a blimp, anyway, if for no other reason than I feel more comfortable in planes. Not because of the Hindenburg disaster, or because of any doubts about the crafts themselves, but planes are familiar.

I dig it, would be a much better freight transporter than planes!

Why on Gods green earth would anyone use a blimp over a plane to get from point a to point b; unless point a is sightseeing and point b is nothing becuase no one uses blimps for transport anymore.

Because it uses less fuel in the long run ? Because it is cheaper?

I think it could have potential.

Exactly

I remember seeing a documentary on the Discovery channel about 2 companies competing to make a high tech transport airship. And the idea is good. It would be safer, if the engines go out for instance it won't crash. It would be able to transport payloads much larger than current transport planes can. Also overall it would be cheaper, requiring less fuel to operate.

Well put.. I also saw this documentary. Blimps do have a potential for extremely heavy lifting jobs and the cost (beyond initial production) are significantly less than airplanes and more versatile than traditional freight.

If push comes to shove with the global warming, I think this will be plausible. As of at this second, though, I don't think it will grow, due to the loss of profit I think it would generate. Unless they can do this whole thing cheap. As of right now, Planes aren't expensive, and provide great revenue. And fastness!

im curious to know the chances of some a hole seeing this thing and shooting at it with a high powered rifle, just cause he's messed up on meth. How sturdy are these things? Thick?

Don't blimps make a supposed come-back every three or four years?

If I recall, Boeing made the 747F only because an airline owner said in just a few years everybody would be travelling via supersonic airliner, and the slower jets would be relegated to freight...

The zeppelin company is still in operation and makes zeppelins for domestic use in Germany

I must be the only one who thinks it looks cool.

Probably they could make a layer of kevlar to cover it to prevent such things.

It wasn't the hydrogen that caused the hindenburg to burst into flames, it was its flammable aluminum zirconium skin combined with electric shock.

I demand that it must be made of lead.

If you don't get what I mean, jump out of a window.

Well, that certainly makes this proverb true! "If life gives you a massive blimp hanger, make an amusement park."

Jesus, that building is enormous. It doesn't look it from your pictures, but...

Heh, that is the second picture in my post, but because of its size, I felt like linking it instead.

Mistake on my part, I suppose. :|
