Press B once and you get get the drag box selection, press B again and it turns into a circle which is brush select, meaning you select things that you drag the circle over while left clicking. Rolling the mousewheel alters the size of the circle. Middle clicking deselects.

www.blender3d.org there are tutorials and video tutorials there. Look through video ones first I'd say, they will show you the UI and stuff, then you can watch ones for other areas.
Takes some people longer than others. Modelling is actually often the 'easy' bit. Just pick a program, get accustomed to it, do some tutorials, practice and push yourself.
I tried a few others but couldn't get them to work, only the .xsi . I guess I could use the uni computers to convert the format, but I'll try redownloading the mod tool and reinstall, and pray that works.

Not meaning to piggy back but how are you managing to import files into the mod tool? I try to import an obj file and all that happens is I get a message in the bottom left corner saying "Function not implemented".
