I know exactly what you mean! I've been cringing quiet a bit about it too!

Source is a lot younger than that and it's always evolving...I'm quite sure that they've packed almost everything that's possible at this time into the engine and are able to add more as it becomes available...

there are a lot of good programs that can do mass reformatting into jpeg...I use thumbsplus from www.cerious.com it's a little expensive, but there are "other" ways of getting it...

but if you can afford the 9800pro, and it sounds like he can, you should definitely go for it...biggest bang for your buck isn't always great... If I could get a $1 card that got 1 fps with max detail, that would be the most fps per dollar out there, but not a good idea! Get the best card...
