The Athlon64 is based on x86 with a 64bit extention. That means you can run 32bit apps just like you could before with no performance loss just like the G5. The real advantage however is running 64bit apps.

Lets never foget the time ATI 'optimised' their drivers for Quake3 a long while back when everyone knew it was used for benchmarks. ATI had to take alot of sh*t from the fans before they took out the optimisations.
