Vista isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Just be informed about the hardware decisions you make, and everything will be A. O.K. As for software, the only things I haven't been able to run are some older 32 bit device drivers, and that's because I'm on x64.

In my experience:
DLP projecting (best) - better blacks, better picture with larger dimensions, best color, light (weight), slightly deeper than LCD
LCD (good) - better color, thinner, back lighting issues, more potential for ghosting
Plasma (not the most practical choice) - the plasma...

If they really want to get data off of a nuked drive, they can. Assuming, you haven't done enough passes to get any residual charges on the plates that the head might have missed. The read/writer heads don't have 100% precision.
