i agree Xenome. I've tried all kinds of different tacticts, nice guy, mean guy, hook in the subject line. And he replies to emails like this. If I was Gabe I would have been too pissed to reply.
Thanks mbrithoms!
The entire game is playable. That's great news. I mean, the game could still in all likelihood take another 6 months to polish, but we will probably see HL2 released this year. Very nice.
Lots of crazy stuff in your post, but it could be spot on.
I hate to be all conspiracy theory, because it sounds so neurotic. But out of my whole post, there is one fact in there that you can't deny. Valve told us they were targetting the "Holiday Season" for release, when they never had...
That's the funny part. As much as I hate the PR side of valve, I think they're incredible game designers. And I think they really are the innovators in the FPS arena. They just don't slap on new graphics and call it the next game. They think of how they can improve the genre in every aspect...
Asshole Lombardi.....
They started out saying a 9/30 release date. They knew about the delay as early as May, but wouldn't tell the fans. They told the mags. They told online sites. They told their publishers. But they didn't tell us. Fine, whatever, like someone said, "They don't owe...
I think that's stretching it Apos. I doubt the editor was thinking:
"Well, I played this brand spanking new level called 'WhatHaveItUnderBlahdyBlah', but at the end of the level, I ran into alyx's dad, and he looked like he was in the same position as that rare screenshot that shows alex's...
I guess it'll be Deja Vu this year all over again. They say "Summer release". Summer ends September 22. So we'lll all sit around again, get giddy with anticipation, then Sept 23, 2004 they'll announce a delay, to "Holiday Season 2004".. The holidays will come and go. Spring will roll around...
The same levels. CRAP! This doesn't make me feel any better at all. They said we'd get new information in the coming weeks up to E3. But the same levels... and "new" screenshots... Look, it's just like screenshot you've already seen, but from a new angle!! woot. I really hope that they are...

Walmart 7/2/2004

We see a little bit has changed (with my most common game retailers). Amazon's date must have been reset or nullled or something. Compusa kicked their...
HELL YEAH!
With the graphics and AI and physics and immersion factor, for a first time dev, I'd say they did a great job.
But, like spiffae said, to each his own. My wife sure wouldn't want to play it.
I agree with that completely. I really hope that HL2 goes above and beyond what Far Cry is (and I think it will). The one scene where the environment REALLY played a part in (from what i've seen of HL2 videos) is when the guy pushed the bookshelf in front of the door to stop the intruding...
From about quake 1 to Battlefield 1942.. all first person shooters have pretty much looked the same to me. Maybe more polygons here, or larger textures there.. or woah, curved surfaces.
Halo and to some extent, UT2K3 were better ..
But Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Stalker... MAN O' MAN...

I'm still hoping for a summer release, looks like most of these retailers think so too. That 9/1 Gamestop date scares me a bit, but...
