I had the same problems (P4 2.6Ghz HT, 512Mb Corsair TwinX PC3200 Dualchannel, GeForce6800). I solved them by reverting the changes the HL2 Benchmark program did to my config files (Without asking me to do so, I might add!) I can't quite remember which Benchmark tool it was, I believe...
