Non-linear games essentially are equivalent to reality TV shows. They show unscripted, spontanious events. You get the feeling that anything can happen- good guys don't always win, romances don't stay together, great plans don't work out, etc. Unlike TV, you get to control over what happens...
HL2: more complex story/storytelling, more developed characters, more engaging gameplay, more fun action sequences, more variety, more immersive, more original settings, more fun style of puzzles, etc...
Though I think it's too hard too compare since, as mentioned, they are part of the same series.
I was under the impression that the characters and stuff were fully customizable; they just chose to make cartoony stuff for the demo (care bear). Either way the game looks really cool.
The problem if indeed they are doing *nothing but* having another touchscreen system is that that's not really thinking out of the box anymore. Yes touchscreen can be *developed further*, but you have to admit that calling it a revolution is a bit of a stretch.
Simply a touch screen definitely would not be 'revolutionary' but I don't think this generation of consoles will see many revolutionary changes at all-- the real juicy new tech is still a few years of development away. Besides that, we haven't fully utilized the technology we do have--...
I don't think filling in details is the key to a good story-- especially when we've only played up to the second segment of the trilogy in HL2's case. I don't even know if trivial detail should count as story (though they are fun when they are high quality like Deus Ex or Thief); they do not...
After reading off gamespy about new motion tracking controls that can follow your hands, eyes and body (and all that other good stuff in that article) I am hoping for something quite revolutionary from Nintendo. I didn't think the DS was very special because it seemed a lot like a palm pilot...
My first reaction is "pretty lame" but I think I have to give them "decent" because they put in the effort and, let's face it, it's only a video game and the majority of games are still very weak story-wise.
I think games should stay games; the exceptions I would make would be for games that created interesting worlds and premises that can be extended upon-- maybe Thief or American Magee's Alice... anyways the majority of the listed games have great premises for video games but if they were made...
Retail quality games that take less time to release, that cost less than normal, that are continually upgraded and that allow players to give feedback for possible future upgrades? Sounds good to me.
The article is dead-on. A couple of other points I'd add:
1. Many people (reviewers are just people after all) went into the game not wanting to be blown away. It's like staring at your feet on a rollercoaster. This is true for the portion of the article that says that some ('nonconformist')...
Is everybody here against Mediafamily now? To be honest I have to agree with them on many points: There is, according to their research on the website and many other studies, a negative effect of exposure to violence for children (this isn't about 'knowing the world', it's about mental health...
Why is Steam illegal? The only thing the article mentions (that is directly related to Valve or Vivendi) is that Germany is making Vivendi make the internet requirement more noticable on the box (just like the toilet brush that needed the warning “Do not use for personal hygiene”), and that...
This is what I got out of that article:
1. HL2 box needs 'better' warning for requirement of internet.
2. Stores should allow returning of games (the ones that don't allow it).
3. $10 transfer fee for HL2 over Steam in Steam EULA not duplicated in HL2 EULA.
(implicit)4. Steam is bad and I...
Valve did not suddenly invent the idea of a physics gun but they certainly developed the idea into something years ahead of anything that has been attempted. You cannot try to take credit away from Valve for achieving that.
The D3 add-on is taking that idea and are putting it into the game...
I thought it was dull. There wasn't enough strategy or even much space or many objects to really take advantage of (and the level wasn't much to speak of either: plain sci-fi building with bad guys arbitrarily thrown at the player). Added to that, the AI wasn't very good and the actual command...
I hope this game turns out to be like Fallout. Travelling and exploring cities, ruins, different groups of people and stuff is fun. Hopefully they have been holding back the screenshots of the other characters and cities (or maybe adding more of them in now with the delay) because I can't say...
I liked how you backed up you opinion pretty well though I would question the 'parts' you broke the games down into. For example I didn't really think Water deserved its own section under 'Graphics' while you don't mention artistic design of the game or animation. Likewise I thought ambient...
