I'd give District 9 a second whirl sometime in the future. More than a few comments I've heard about it sound like the results of having expectations of the film clash with what it actually is. Second viewings usually help me see a movie more clearly when that happens to me.

There is actually a really good reason for the similarity: Tetra Vaal was done by the same writer/director. The film is directly based on Blomkamp's Alive in Joburg (as others have mentioned), but Blomkamp has worked his obsession with the slums of South Africa into many of his projects, Tetra...

proof that the average person is a dumbass

D9 is also a film with a huge appeal to super-nerds, who are also the people who tend to pirate a lot of movies. And it has very little in the broad appeal category. While my mom would probably find Transformers 2 annoying, there are a few things in D9 that might make her actually throw up.

Possible Beyond Good and Evil 2 footage?

I'm waiting for some kind of real confirmation. I have a feeling this game has been off-and-on hold for a while.

Not to be a downer, and that is a funny email, but didn't we know about this almost a month ago? http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/674841

I think a sequel could work, but I wouldn't want a direct continuation of the storyline probably. There could certainly be more stories in the world Blomkamp sets up in the film though. Also, the vibe I get from the interviews with him that I've read, he doesn't rule out the idea of a sequel...

I can actually understand the idea of remaking that for a US audience. Quality aside, it's a seriously odd movie, and it is relatively difficult for foreign audiences to understand. Whether the new one is any good at all is a different story.

I think they're probably just reacting to the washed-out near future look that they both have, and putting really fantastic sci-fi elements into a really down-to-earth setting.

    The Amazing Screw-On Head

Also, between Giamatti and David Hyde-Pierce the voice talent probably would have cost a fortune. I loved that it proved you could get the gist of Mignola's art in a moving form.

Yeah, there's not really a question on that front. I'd even be willing to give new writers a chance, but the actors are the one thing they'll need.

Those reports should be met with some heavy skepticism by the way. Not that Fox hasn't issued casting notices for those voices, but this would not be the first time they've made such a rather juvenile play so that they could secure the needed actors at lower rates. As noted in the source...

In Michael Bay's defense, the true events that Armageddon was based on had a lot more explosions and awesomeness than the true events that Apollo 13 was based on.

As is Dexter. Fringe is barely a "cop" show and is something I find amusing, and I hear good things about the Closer. But xcellerate's point wasn't that all cop shows suck, its that there's already a million of them.

    WIZARD PEOPLE YEAH

This is pretty darned old, and was an "alternate" soundtrack that a guy made for the first Harry Potter film. About a year ago me and a bunch of friends got drunk and watched the whole thing and it was awesome.

Not really, the Halo film is just on a sort of indefinite suspension, since Jackson and the studio had to agree to disagree. District 9 is what Jackson and Blomkamp decided to do instead. This way Blomkamp gets his name known (hopefully with a great film), while the rights holders can decide...

UP: 9.5/10 More than any other Pixar movie, this isn't just a really good kids film, it's just a great film period. Granted it is definitely a fantasy film (weird creatures, talking dogs, etc), but it is clear right from the beginning that the focus is on it's characters and not on wild...
