When HL2 came out, I was running it off of a 30GB drive with 2MB of cache. Half gig of DDR266 ram, P4 2.8 on a 533 FSB. Video card? GF4 MX440. (DX7 FTW) And this was BEFORE valve came out with the pre-caching update. Load times were definitely in the minutes range.

I think you're right; it looks like the sort of filter you see during HL2's opening G-Man scene, as well as during the Citadel explosion at the end of Ep 1. That whole "pseudo-negative" look.

In one of the last commentary nodes in Ep 1, they say you boarding the train allows them to start you there in Ep 2. I can't remember the exact words, but it sounds like Ep 2 starts pretty much EXACTLY when Ep 1 ends.

Unfortunately, I didn't know it was going to happen, so I wasn't taking a demo. ;)
