Because you see that number on the left of the decimal? It's not 2. It's 1. That means it's 1.999999.... not two. They're two distinct numbers. Same thing with .9999... and one.

Tell me this.. So you are going to tell me 1.99... = 2. Right? That is pretty much what you are argueing. It is close to it, but it is not it. You cannot change the real number of 1.99... to 2. 0.99.. is smaller than 1 therefore it cannot be it. It can equal 1 by putting it in formulas, but like WhiteZero said, you cannot change the base number. The base number = the base number. It cannot equal another number that is smaller/larger than itself. 1=1, 2=2, 3=3, etc.. .99...=.99...

Woops. :P You're right about that, for some reason i saw ten over zero.

Whatever, you're still wrong about .9999...='ing 0 though.

I agree that for all intents and purposes, it's exactly the same. In a real life situation substituting one for the other won't change the results in a significant way, but it doesn't change the fact that .9999.. = .9999... not 1.

But that 1/3=.33333... and 1/3=1 thing is compelling. It follows that .99999... should equal one. Either you're right (unless WZ is right and it's just an approximation), or something is fundamentally flawed in mathematics.

one has the decimal point before, the other after
one contains an infinite number of 9's the other contains a single 'one'

Yes, the fact that most people can't grasp the concept comes from a flaw in the decimal system, but conceptually, it is true.

You have a piece of pie. 1 full piece.. The other with a tiny piece cut out of it. Lets say it just happened to end up like 0.99... You don't have the WHOLE piece of pie. It is larger than 0.99.. Which has to mean that it cannot be 0.99..

It can be true. But meh..

Yes, but you can't because Pi in never-ending. You can only go so far in a calculator or some device to calculate numbers.

Saying 0.999.. = 1 is like saying that y=2^x will eventually cross the x axis. It gets closer and closer and closer, but it'll never happen.

I agree that it can stand for 1 and not make any kind of noticeable difference, but they ARE NOT the same number.

Even conceptual, it still doesn't work. 0.9 repeating is never-ending. It keeps going and going on and on forever; it never stops. There's always going to be that one SLIVER of a remainder left.

Let me clarify this to you people who know basic mathematics.

0.999 is not equal to 1. It is if you are a basic mathematics person. For me, being a technologist, 0.999 is far off from one. Let me explain:

In some examples we have, we have to analyse circuts and other things like that. Now, lets say you have a circuit and I analysed it and I was supposed to get 1 but I got 0.999 instead..that's very close to 1 but it's not optimal..in the industry I work in you have to be exact so 0.999 won't do..especially troubleshooting microchips...if you have 0.00000001 volts off, the chip won't work, because they work in such small voltages...so 1 and 0.999 are different...but it entirely depends on the application you are applying it to. You can argue this forever, but there is no diffinitive answer.
