As much as you can muster, any 3D program stress the computer
If you have a Pentium 66mhz with Dos 6.0 I wouldnt advise trying to install it though. Doubt 4-8mb memory could handle it.
Hint: How about checking the discreet homepage? Or saying your specs?
I used to run Max 3.0 on my old Pentium2 400 Mhz with 128 megs of ram. I don't know how well the newer releases would run on a configuration like that, but using it for low poly models isn't very taxing to the system. If you ever start creating high polygon models (over 20,000), you're going to have slowdown problems on a low to medium end PC. Really, any decent PC should have no trouble at all with low polygon models.
Depends really on the program. Some 3D applications are memory intensive, some CPU intensive, and some video card intensive, or a mix of the three. For 3D modeling it is generally a rule to use a powerful machine as it is intensive to your computer.
Ok
Well Depends on the version of 3dsmax.. since your asking about 3dsmax5 ( the most recent untill the excellent max6 is released ).
Max5 will run on a PII architecture machine without crashing.
But newer technology cpu's are preferred for consistant usability.
(Cloth simulations/physics simulations may not function properly on the lower end of the PII's etc.. and some 3rd party plugins will crash.
but if yur PIII or newer your pretty much set.
Ram wise 128 meg minumum if running WindowsXP/NT4 or 2k.
dont even attempt running it under Windows millenium/or any 9x kernel...as it will ALWAYS be unstable. ( I had found most unstable in material editing/Mapping. )
Ive been using 3dsmax since beta of v1.0.. Its always ran like crap on a 9x kernel although some people report they have got it working.. GOOD LUCK.
I have a PIV 1.4GHz 256 RAM and to be honest, 3dsmax5 is unusable on it. I have been able to run 3dsmax4.2 on it fine in the past, but whenever I even install max 5, my entire computer grinds to a halt, and it returns back to normal when I uninstall.
