I'm thinking of buying this video card as its only $185, and trying the softmod to change it to a 9800/9800pro. Has any one had success with this? Failure? What brand card?

As far as I know, it is not possible to mod it.
Check out rage3d.com, their forum.

The only current ATI cards im aware of being softmodded are the 9500non pro to a 9700, and the 9800non pro to a 9800 pro.

from http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/download.php:
"Patched ati2mtag.sys 316 KB (9500 -> 9700 and 9800SE -> 9800 PRO) "

Riva Tuner also is able to patch it.

And there is a possibility that a bios flash will also fix it.

And supposively it is possible. The 9800se has the 4 pipelines disabled, but the architecture is still there for the full 8 pipelines. Some, people, though not nearly all, experiance artifacts after reenabling the 4 additional pipelines. One theory to explain this is that the SE's are just 9800's with a malfunctioning pipeline, therefore they became the crippled versions, to still make profit off of bad cards.

From what i've been reading success has been more than 50% though.

With overclocking and all 8 pipelines enabled, the card only performs between 1-3% slower than the 9800pro. Which mind you is not bad for being $200 cheaper.

So yes it can, and has been done.
