This is similar to story I posted a while back about a girl who'd been neglected basically since birth, forced to live in a dank dark room without contact from her family, fed only scraps and (if I recall correctly) pet food. She was adopted by a loving family afterwards and seemed to have made some progress, but was still unable to speak properly or form normal habits, or basically even learn anything as a normal child would.

That's the part that's really soul crushing to me - as horrible as these things are by themselves, it's the lasting effect that makes these actions all the more despicable. It's hard to let go of anything traumatic from your childhood, but to be not only neglected, but actively mistreated, tormented, tortured... this kid's probably never going to be okay. ;(

And if you look at some criminal's background, you will see that they have had bad relationships with their parents. Not saying this kid is going to be a criminal. Nor excusing their behavior, but I think I can understand when people in these circumstances you know don't exactly conform to society's expectations.
