So, with no signs of a cease fire, or a quick, peacefull end to the conlflict in the Lebanon/Israel area. And with all signs pointing toward an engagement with Syria and or Iran, where do you think this will all end up? What do you think will come of all this. And to anyone who happens to live in an allied country of Israel (which happens to be a great deal of us) would you be willing to give your life to "protect" Israel?

My vote, obviously, no, because I believe the response to be disproportionate, and that the capture (not kidnapping) of soldiers could have been handled with a little more diplomacy. I also believe the only reason my country supports Israel so hard lined is two fold; the Israeli/Jewish lobby is very, very rich and powerfull in this country, and many of our Christian politicians are more worried about poll numbers, than morality.

I feel that both Israel, and the Arab community need to stop and take a look at what they are doing here. They are spiraling out of control. Nothing but death and destruction will ever come of any of this. I wouldn't die for either side.

The Arabs have good reason to be pissed off considering Israel is sitting on their land.

And it's this type of thinking which leads to wars. If only land was communal then there would be no need for any of this.

I'm sure a few native Indians would have a few things to say to you on this topic.

It's already a sort of global conflict, so I don't think this guy's call for jihad or whatever really makes much of a difrerence one way or the other. Terrorists will continue to be terrorists and the civilized world will try to stop them with arms. There will be no diplomatic solution and there will be no end to the confilct until humanity is destroyed. Sad, but likely true. Hopefully most of us will not be touched intimately by either of these bellicose forces.

I'll fight if i'm directly threatened, else there is no reason for war.

My initial gut reaction was '**** that'. I dont want to die for either side - as far as im concerned Israel is (almost) just as bad as Hamas/Hezbollah.

But really thinking about it, if the Arab neighbours actually invaded Israel, I probably would consider fighting for Israel - not to defend the country, or to fight for a Jewish Homeland or whatever - but to defend the innocent Israeli civilians who would be on the recieving end of a whole lotta pain. Then again, I cant imagine life being much fun for the palestinians in that situation, so im not sure how i'd deal with that.

I cant imagine the battle lasting for long before the nukes started flying though....

As usual, I feel my contribution would be more useful to humanity coming from an arm-chair and computer desk, rather than on the battlefield.

My intial thoughts were "Nuke the Commie bastards". That is still my opinion, but I am unsure who is Redder: Israel or Palestine? Once I have more information, I can make my decision.

If Israel keeps at it the way they're doing it... they need to accept that they're going to be attacked by a larger group of countries. I'm not going to want to sit back and wait while Israel does what it wants and expects us to back them up when they bite more than they can chew.

I'm more for defending israel if its attacked by aggressors, rather than people reacting from their war mongering against them.

Israel belongs to the Jews as well as the Christians and I would fight for it, given the chance.

Minor detail that it's actually Jewish land, but, you know what I mean.

We do have a couple of places that are worth something to us there, and I'm pretty sure we're allowed! But Christian holy sites don't really matter to me that much I think...

Muslims have a couple of places worth something to them too, that's one of the reasons why there's such a ruckus.

Those rascals.

That doesn't make sense if you read about the story of the region.

what? the bible?
It hasn't been an official jewish state for many hundreds of years, and was just established in 1948. Israel hasn't been ruled by native jews since 635 AD.

The point is, their new country displaced thousands of people and incited many further wars.

Holy lands are completley idiotic ideas. Nobody should fight over a peice of real estate. Sure I can see people fighting over ideas, even economics, but holy lands? I don't care who was living there in 635 AD, or what holy sites are there, the point is that the people who are living there now have the rights to the land.

Arabs: "OMG WEWT!

We have LIBERATED THE HOLY LANDS! We are now in control of that one statue thingy.

Now what?"

I'm still waiting for Europe to stop being pussies and finally realize that if they want any kind of respect that they're going to have to pony up a force to sit in Southern Lebanon to try to calm the situation. But I'm certainly not holding my breath on this. I wouldn;t be surprised if they fail yet again to take a firm stance and work to solve an important issue.

Isn't Europe wanting to put in a force and the US vetoing the idea?

O rly?

Since President Bush is calling for a multinational force to be put there, something tells me he's not gonna have it vetoed.

After talks at the White House, Bush told reporters that the two leaders "agree that a multinational force must be dispatched to Lebanon quickly"

Well, less of vetoing, more of pussyfooting around the issue.

How long's it been? 3 weeks now? Haven't heard so much as a peep up until now.

For this war I wil not pick sides. With all the direct targeting of civilians, it's hard to choose which side. Well, that's war.

Ooh. Well, the reason I phrased my post as a question is because it was information via word of mouth (admittedly a reliable person) and also it was information I heard...yesterday, maybe the day before. :p

So either I'm wrong entirely, or Bush has finally given in just today (when the news story was written).

Which is nice, because it really seems like the only solution to the crisis (even the tories admit it!).

hmmm...reminds me of the six day war...

anyway, i would defend Israel, no matter what, always.

Well, I'm not even remotely Jewish but I sympathize with their badassness at defending themselves. If it came to it, sure i'd go and help them out. Hopefully by that point i'd have my eyes fixed so that i can shoot right.

I don't really care who's land it was before, the Israelis live there now, and there are various groups that want to make a second holocaust upon them/drive them into the sea.

So yeah, Masada will not fall again.

Israel could burn to the ground and i wouldn't blink an eye. I'd probably just change the channel and watch the simpsons or go play counter-strke or something.
