a honest question about the halo serie

I'd like to point out something interesting about the repetitive enviroments:

They highlight what Halo is all about: the enemies. All through the game, it's not jumping puzzles and lava/radioactive waste that's slowing you down, it's the AI. The enviroment in Halo is just a background to a superb tactical shooter. Battles ebb and flow between participents. Play Halo on Lengendary, and hate yourself for loving it so much.

And hell, if this many people liked Halo 1 so much, what do you think it will be like when Bungie has enough time and knowledge to fix their mistakes? Add to that the incredible stuff Bungie is showing with Halo 2, then I'm sold.

^ too right :) Thinking about Halo 2 gives me a semi \o/

Man, just tried upping difficulty to Legendary...is that actually fun in the Xbox version or what?
Only the second level and spent the entire goddamn time behind a rock with no ammo and no life.

the story was OK, Halo 2 looks to be much better though. I'm hopeing. Because the story in Halo was well...a bit of a let down.

Stick at it m8 ......... mastering Legendary is incredibly satisfying (the difference between a good game and a classic one imo). The alien weapons really prove their worth here (the plasma pistol and needler becoming invaluable against the elites) Of course, there's little a rocket launcher and shotgun can't fix :)

You'll have to be aggressive and quick. Use cover wisely, but don't stay still for too long - try and take em out one at a time. Don't worry about saving ammo, just keep on the move and pick up guns on the way. If you see an elite, unload a full clip of needles at him while running away :) Learn to use the nades well - plasma nades are our friends.

(btw - the 2nd level on Legendary is one of the hardest imo)

343 guilty spark was the place I couldn't play Legendary any longer...damn the grunts were everywhere....and grenade tossing was like a hobby or something, I just couldn't get out of the first indoor part!

Theres something else great about halo that people tend to forget : the music. From the nostalgic tune of the opening menu to the heavy guitar riff when you escape the silent cartographer, its simply great. I cant think of any game with better music than halo. Even if you dont pay attention to it, it sets the atmosphere very well.

:| It's an OKAY game. One thing I really hate about the game is the damned enemies, TOO MANY! Example: you're running around in a narrow ass corridor and BAM there's like 40 Flood monsters at your disposal, they just keep comin and comin.

hey some of us like them odds.

Freespace 1&2, GTA: Vice City, Medal of Honor games, Interstate 76, Total Annihilation, any Star Wars game and Return to Castle Wolfenstein all have better music IMO.

But Halo is right up there. The music is really top notch and I wish more of the game featured it. The menu music is the best though.

Halo's music was high-budget top notch stuff. GTA lisenced their music, Star Wars rehashed their 6-note theme tune, RTCW ripped music from the Alien movie, and the rest are blah. There's no argument against Halo music.

Well its my opinion that there are better out there. That takes nothing away from Halo's great (and since you missed my praise the first time, great) music or from your opinion.

I actually always though Halo was one of the best examples of sound design in a game ever. You hear that theme and you KNOW its Halo.

Microsoft is to blame for that, they forced a deadline on bungie to complete the game on time with the xbox release. Bungie had BIG ideas for the game, but had to finish the game fast so they couldn't work on the level designs much.

While I feel bad for them that that's the case, knowing this doesn't make it any more fun to play. The really painful thing is that the outdoor levels are so great. If they had just cut out all the extra identical indoor sections, the game would have been shorter, but a lot better.

It's weird. The combat in Halo was so highly tuned and fun, that I didn't really mind all the identical indoor stuff. Sure, I would have liked to see more variety, but in my book - the more Halo the better.

Grim Fandango.

Anyway im sick of all this arguing about Halo, the game is or was overhyped in my opinion. Still a great game but not exactly earth-shattering or genre-changing stuff.

True. That evolution video is great - makes me feel better about some of my unfinished game programming projects! :P
