A question about the code.

Did they also get the code for the physics from havox etc? Things could escalate if sometheing like that happened....

Yes it was---possible lawsuit from Havok...although IMO I don't think it's gonna happen. The people at Havok probably aren't that vindictive. I'm sure Valve has given them tons of money to use their code and tweak it to their liking. You'd have to be a real asshole to sue the people who are going to make your own incarnation famous.

The whole codebase including the Havok physics engine and Miles Sound System was stolen. They even got the stuff that was supposed to authenicate CD keys and users on Steam (although I don't think they got the Steam code, thank god).

And Havok was "famous" long before Valve picked them up.

Max Payne 2 is out in one week, and it utlizes the Havok 2.0 engine. If that's not releasing the physics code, I don't know what is.

I doubt Havok will sue Valve, especially considering MP2.

I wasn't aware you could view a game's 'code' from regular game disks. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I mean you get the complied edition of it or whatever, but not the source...or am I wrong again?

You seriously have to get a clue on how advanced Havok is.

Any one else think mr pink is an asshole

no pun intended

Pink: I don't mean to offend you but your statement souds like it came from your avatar....

LOL good one m8

EDIT: As to your comment Pink...that's like saying Valve was lazy for using the Quake engine for Half-Life, even though they heavily modified it.

It's not new news that Valve worked very closely with the Havok team in order to tweak it to their liking.

The only developer I can think of that's building their own physics engine from the ground up is iD...but that really comes as no surprise seeing as John Carmack is a programming genius and can literally do anything code related that he wants to.

Besides, iD's physics engine is not the focus of Doom III...it's about the atmosphere and sucking you in to the experience.

Damn dude, at least try to not look like a flaming homosexual. Don't ask don't tell, you know?

iD is making their own physics engine because there was nothing on the market that was powerfull enough to do what they wanted to do with the physics in doom3. They passed up havok because it lacks the muscle a compitent dveloper like iD could put into a physics engine.

LOL..and I suppose all those years of multi-million dollar investment that Valve put in were done in vain?

Not enough muscle? Please. That has nothing to do with it. I'm sure Carmack knew he could make a better one himself...so naturally he chose the home-grown route.

Your argument is comparing apples to oranges. Valve's use of a physics engine with Half-Life 2 is very intregral to it's gameplay. Judging from the info of Doom III we have now...which includes the leaked alpha and all the various previews...physics is not essential for it's gameplay.

The implemented engine iD is using probably acts more as a subtle addition to the game world opposed to it being at the forefront of the play mechanics.

iD said in an inteview that they shopped around for a physics engine but didnt find anything with enough power to do wha tthey wanted to do, so they are aking their own. Thats a simple fact.

and physics will play a huge role in doom3. no, doom3 isnt the physics demo that hl2 is, but the sexy physics system carmack is making will play a huge role in the game. there WILl be traps and there WILL be puzzles that use the physics system. also, physics will be used to create suction of the martian atmosphere, so when you shoot out a window the atmosphere sucks objects from the base into the martian outdoors, including the poor marine himself.

monsters will also be throwing things at you. bigger demons will even pick up smaller baddies, alive or dead, and toss them at you.

go away...

But how do you know which engine has more "muscle"? I mean, did you test it and had a good look at their source or something?

I knew about the baddies throwing baddies part---but the martian atmosphere thing sounds new. I'm not doubting what you're saying, but could you please reference a link to a preview that talks about this...or a particular issue of a magazine? That sounds really cool, though.

Valve worked together with Havok on its physiks. So was a kind of team-work. I don't see why Havok should do anything to Valve now.

You're more likely to get crabs from Mr Pink's avitar than headcrabs. BAN!!!!!

Exactly. They're probably quite sympathetic to their situation. If there are any future games that sport a physics system with similar properties to Havok 2.0, then I'm sure the proverbial sniffing hounds will come barking at that developer's doorstep, looking into whether they implemented sections of their engine into their game. That is who will be sued...not Valve.

it was mentioned in one of the many interviews released on sept. 23. i dont have a link off the top of my head, you will have to look around. they also said that when you use a teleportation device it releases a shockwave blasting nearby objects away and shattering any nearby glass.

I want this game NOW
