Hey I just bought a mx 510. Nice mouse.
But I want to know a few things.

First, though it is a usb mouse it came with a thing where you can put the usb and then stick it in a ps/2 port. Now thats what I did, just do the usb syay free, cause lots of different hardware uses usb. Now this mouse transmits data faster then your avrage mouse. So does it hurt my performance if I connect it to the pc this way. Do I have to stick it in the USB to get the full potential out of it.

Second, my microsoft cheapo mouse software had the ability to set how fast you scroll with teh scroll wiel. But as far as I can see this logitech software does not. The scrollwiel scrolls to slow for me. So is there any way to set it to scroll faster. If there isn't, is there any mouse software on the net I can download that does that.
I remember seeing on forums post like, the mx510 is great, but don't use the default software, use razer or microsoft software. Now is that really possible. And the mx510 software does have the great option to turn off mouseacceleration in games, if I use different software will that be turned off.

You can change the scroll speed through Control Panel and under Mouse Properties.

Usb polling rate is much faster than ps/2's i think ps/2's is like 60hz and usb's is like 400hz.

I have my mine in the ps/2 slot and never had any problems or performance issues whatsoever. I can change the scroll speed in the control panel and I use the standard software (MouseWare 9.80). It works fine for me.

And what reasons do people have to use other software? just curious, it might be interesting.

holydeadpenguins, what does this polling rate do?

I think poling rate is how much times it sends information forth and back between the mouse and PC. And I think he says the USB can handle a faster polling rate.

Other software has more options I think. Maybe things like changing the dpi registration for the x and y axis separatly, so you can turn fast while your up and down movement is still the same. Ot maybe other stuff, I can't rememebr correctly, I'm pretty satisfied myself.

Edit: just found this:

Speed/Performance
The next key element in providing the overall fastest performing mouse is the connection between the mouse and the computer. Until recently, PS/2 has been the standard adapter type for a mouse. Most PS/2 devices operate at 30-40 polls/sec in Windows 9x and 60 polls/sec in Windows NT. The faster the sampling rate of your mouse, the fewer signals that will be lost and the more precise the mouse will feel. Universal serial bus ports have become the new standard for the mouse and a majority of other computer peripherals. USB features a polling rate fixed at 125 poll/sec. The Razer Boomslang features support for both PS/2 ports and USB ports by the use of an adapter to convert the USB connector to a PS/2 version. PS/2 users will be able to benefit by increasing their polling rate to a max of 200 polls/sec which is the max allowed in PS/2. The side effect of increasing the polling rate in PS/2 mode is that it taxes your cpu significantly so most gamers will want to stick to USB's 125 polls/sec.

Anyway thnx for your anwsers, atleast now I know it is called polling rate and could google it up :p

It's just the speed of transmission.

60Hz = 60,000 Instructions per second
400Hz = 400,000 Instructions per second

I don't think with the mouse it will make any difference to the performance at all.

And you can change the scroll wheel speed in the control panel under the mouse options.

USB is faster, but you won't see a difference if you switch.

Both USB 1 and 2 are faster than the PS/2 ports you use for keyboards/mice.

Wtf? I just turn off my comp, put the mx510 in the usb slot, turn my pc on again, and it couldn't boot :/ it just hang...
