:naughty: What the hell are they really . Are they human experiments which went wrong and turned into ugly dudes and is that why they are so covered up and stuff. Also why do they wear those gas mask lookin things?

In the E3 presentation I got from GameSpy(It's a trailer) a Valve spokesman says during the strider scene "Combines are these aliens that have invaded earth and are slowly eating their way through City-17."

There's a lot of debate about whether the white-gas-mask-wearing guys are aliens or humans working for the combine. In some of the vids they are heard shouting in english, which makes you think they're human...plus they look human.

we'll just have to wait and see.

My personal thougt is that they are humans that are technically enhanced :borg: ...

That's why they wear gas-masks, because they can't breathe properly(think about something like storm troopers and darth vader)!!! :)

a·li·en ( P ) Pronunciation Key (l-n, lyn)
adj.
Owing political allegiance to another country or government; foreign: alien residents.
Belonging to, characteristic of, or constituting another and very different place, society, or person; strange. See Synonyms at foreign.
Dissimilar, inconsistent, or opposed, as in nature: emotions alien to her temperament.

n.
An unnaturalized foreign resident of a country. Also called noncitizen.
A person from another and very different family, people, or place.
A person who is not included in a group; an outsider.
A creature from outer space: science fiction about an invasion of aliens.
Ecology. An organism, especially a plant or animal, that occurs in or is naturalized in a region to which it is not native.

In the case of what was said in the E3 presentation, Alien has more than one meaning.

"In this last seqence your'll get a look at the citadel at the centre of the alien combine. The combine is a fortress that is slowly eating its way through the rest of city-17."

Thats the quote from the E3 video. :)

frances_farmer has it right. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're extra-terrestrial, it could mean that they're alien to the current location, meaning that they're foreigners or something.

marksman, sorry, my memory sucks, thanks for clearing that up.

I think its fairly obvious that they do mean alien in the intergalactic sense. Considering that HL1 was FULL of aliens. Yet maybe the combine soldiers are humans. I just played HL1 for the first time after having it for about a year, beat the sucker in a day (a looooooooooong wasted day) and near the end you see a lot of dead people in HEV suits. Most likely people that have fallen before you have. So its fair to assume that if these people died before you then there were probably people that succeeded before you. And became "employed" by the guy at the end, never got his name. Could the people that are working for the combine actually be people employed by Mr. Black?

Everyone pay attention to the "barricade bink demo", right after the combine shoots the flare gun , pay attention to his language, the way he speaks , he´s clearly not human. Then again in the same demo , just a bit earlier, when Gordon barricades himself behnid a wrecked car and the he throws the grenade at those two Combine , listen to the way the Combine screams when he falls near Gordon after the grenade explodes, very weird voice frequency for a human don´t you think. :naughty:

I think I just figured it out. The Combine that wear the white masks are the Metropolice/Metrocops. They are required to speak English so that the humans in City 17 can understand them. The Combine with black and grey masks would be the soldiers, elite and grunt respectively, and they have no reason to learn English as all they'd be doing is blasting away the law-breakers :D

Halo rocks.

PS: Hummmm, intersting theory, but that doesn´t explain why the city17 lies in ruins in several places, looks as an alien force took over the city and have put the population under curfew.

lol, I meant Elite Soldiers and "grunts" which is generally taken as a term for "standard soldiers" :)

Perhaps the game starts out under "regular" Combine law, with just the Metrocops holding down the civilians. After a short while, a large assault is planned and the attack manages to grab the attention of the entire city's contingent of Combine, and a huge war breaks out. The attack is pushed down, parts of the city are completely ruined, and the city police is switched with the military and goes into martial law.

I think the combine are just that a combination like most of us have speculated at least once.

Oh and Abom I agree kinda...

I think the combine that look like humans are human at least in part and then the striders and flything gunship thing are also part of the combine as the alien side or somthing....

But I definatly think the combine that you see in the barricade movie as well as alot of other sequences are human..

Why you ask?

Because in the tunnels video the combine soilder says "Hold it right there!"

Can't get much more human than that really. :)

Yeah, as you probably know there's been alot of theories on this. The grey masked combine appear to speak english, while the white talk an unidentifiable language.

Like I said, the Metrocops need to speak English :stare:

Guys, I just checked the barricade video, I think I got an explanation to why the Metrocops can speak English, have you checked Barneys suit? It's a Combine Metrocop one, he must've been a Metrocop before the 'rebels' formed.

So I believe the Metrocops are really human.

Or maybe he's undercover...

The combine soldiers do speak english. I the trap town video just as that swinging beam hits a guy, another soldier says "man down". Personaly I think they are a little bit human and a little bit machine. The machine part is alien technology but I think they are cyborgs. They bleed red so I would asume they are more human than alien. The only alien that bled red were the barnicles. But they gorged themselfs on human skulls so who knows. What ever the combine are they arn't entirely bright. I assume that they will take the part of the marines in the first game were they flush you out of places. Not too smart but they are strong as a team.

When we get the game, I bet they will be a force to be reconed with. The marines in the first halflife could scare the hell out of you. Valve kept showing the combine as being wussies and the AI was not done. When it's finished they work together like the marines, they will flush you out of cover, and I bet they will know how to flank you. Not only that but I bet they will be put in places to suprise the hell out of you.

I saw that the combine use flare guns too. They called in an air strike in the barricade video. I can't wait for those tense battles.

Um a question wonkers, what says that aliens cna't have red blood?

that question is to fhylosofic for me, the only thing i know is that zombies and headcrabs have green blood!!!check out the docks video :farmer:

this is my litle teory

combines soldiers: maybe they are designed to be perfect soldiers, the aliens are resistant to the bullets and maybe they hav something else like, best sensitive skills,or more strongers, the points is the combines are designed to be best of a normal human soldier,or maybe they are combined whit a race that we dont know nothing

the gas mask:in HL1 the grunts use gas masks to,and in my opinion a soldier must be equiped to any situation,so the gas mask is just for that,to stay in poisonuos places, and maybe hav other things like night vision or helmet, and the colors, maybe is a class cause the grey are more ressintant tan the white

the voices:in my opinion they dont speak englishs in order that the enemy dont understand them, and maybe they need to speak english to talk whit the enemy if is necessary,or maybe how they are part human they know the human languaje

blood:what hav so strange that the combines hav red blood? but I see the blood of the combines is much dark of the normal,or maybe not

barney suit:if he found a dead combine and take it armor?

the gunship and the strider:war machines(we dont know if they hav pilots),the strider can be a machine designed to patrol,or how a movile hig turret

the combine forrtres eating the city:a.....maybe they are taking the enemy territory

the combine leader and theyr objetives:I DONY KNOW!!!!

Well TBH we don't even know if the strider and gunship are pilotless OR are 100% machine. They could easily be biomechs, in which case they would need no pilot, or they could be machine in which case they would need to be piloted. Or remote-piloted. Maybe the Combine Citadel acts as an AI node (not a Source-engine AI path node, mind you ;)) to control all the mechs/biomechs in City 17?

The city looks damaged because no matter where you are when an unknown power is trying to take over you are going to put up a fight. The Combine probly had to sweep every building one at a time to make sure the human resistance factor was kept as low as possible. Scanners can only go so far, and its not like a city is defenseless so Im sure they had military / war machines of their own that they put up a fight with, thus the city is damaged. It dosen't matter because the Combine fortress is slowly but surley taking the entire city. I don't think the machines serve any true purpose but to overrun the human race making us into an endangered species or even worse Combine slaves/expirements.

Most likely the combines are a combination of human and alien. Hence the verb "COMBINE." They would be equivalent of the those whack looking things in HL1 that had headcrabs on their face. Remember they WERE wearing scientist outfits.

bgesley, no offense, but are you a retard..?o_O; those were zombies, normal scientists that headcrabs had kileld, the headcrabs attached themselfs to the persons head, slowly digests it, replaces its own brain and takes over the body, some mutations occur and bang we got the zombie.

yeah but the fact is that they have zombies in HL2. And they are stupid. They ran into that chopper in trap town. The Combine are smarter than that. Yadda yadda yadda...

I hear no scream, merely the flatline sound they make when they die.

That sounds pretty accurate, except that in the tunnels vid, one of the grey-masked ones says "Hold it there!" to Alyx and Gordon...

Maybe some of them are human and some are not? That is why they have different uniforms.

They're time traveling monks sent by God to smite you.

I don't know about all of that, but i do think that some are brainwashed/altered humans that were captured. I mean what else are they going to do with us aside from slavery/testing. And yes it has been said that the white masked ones are Metrocops and black are military of some type.

Yes, the white ones are most likely cops, from all that I've gathered they only have handguns, the black ones have MP5s and shotguns.
