How legal are these in the grand VAC scheme of things? I wanna go on them and grind out some achievements but I don't really wanna be banned for it. What'd you guys think?

I've not heard of anybody being banned for using them, although I hear maps like achievementbox can really mess with your personal stats.

I don't think Valve has any intention of reprimanding players who use them.

achievement maps aren't really all their cracked up to be. Without organization it's just a bunch of people running around going "somebody help me with this!" or "somebody go scout so i can kill you 50 times!"

all while some other medic runs around with the bonesaw trying to kill every medic.

VAC catches third party hacks, like aimbots. You can't be banned for just playing a map :\

Yeah getting 30 scout kills in a row and such will do that.

They can be good sometimes, like when an admin is on, people are using mic's or there aren't that many people there. But most of the time you're better off on a 2fort server with small amounts of people playing (who are farming themselves).

Ah, I see.

I didn't actually know how they worked and figured it might be some weird bug thing, but yeah. That would certainly do it.

I tried one server where there were loads of bots that just did nothing - that was brilliant. Everyone was really co-operative and helpful.

For some reason, I cant find that one anymore, and all the others i've tried have been a disaster (every runs round needlessly killing each other).

It does kinda mess up your stats. My Medic score is 104 now, when everything else is around 20.

It's not like BF2 where DiCE says you can't do it. Valve doesn't give a shit :p

I would avoid non Valve maps, i went on a Mario Kart map at it's messed up my Medic score now it says i have 178 points. Valve should disable Stats and achievement tracking on custom maps.
Don't worry about VAC unless you start modifying the game VAC won't bother you.

I made my own map stat_box for this purpose. For the more mundane achievements like kill 50 x I had 8 bot medics on blu and 8 scout bots on red. Yes you need to use sv_cheats but I was using a dedicated server and turned cheats off before everyone joined, hence stat recording still worked. If you want to stat whore don't do it on a public server you're only asking for trouble.

Didn't take long for the small group I was working with to get most of the achievements they wanted. I just stopped caring and left some of the harder ones to get legit.

Achievement servers ?.. Seriously. People have got too much time on their hands.

Actually not enough time hence the need to fastly grind those achievements to get the unlockables.

I currently have 8 medic achievements. I've gained 5 of them by specifically grinding for them, for example last night I ubered engineers just to get the Second Opinion achievement. I doubt this is what Valve had in mind.

Achievement grinding cuts down on the time you'd otherwise spend trying to get the unlockables legitimately. A lot of people would rather knock the achievements out in a night or two instead months.

I've not really considered going into an achievement server. I'd quite like to get the achievements the manual way. Even if it does take me another month.

I'll do it the ''cheating'' way for Pyro achievments. I don't care for others, Pyro is my girl. (guy, for you non belivers.)

My stats are completely horribly broken at this point, because I joined a server that had some kind of bizarre mod. Everything was running incredibly fast, and when healing somebody, their health would constantly go almost to zero and then refill almost instantly. I got Intern, Specialist, and Chief of Staff as the server name promised, but I also now have completely skewed stats. Might email Valve sometime and see if there's anything they can/will do about that.

I doubt they will, unless they reset your achievements as well. They'll just tell you "it serves you right for whoring" :p

I called this back when the achievements were first announced and everyone laughed.

All jerking-my-own-ego-off aside, I don't see the big issue. People who play the medic class predominantly act like unlockables are sacred to players like them and that if you don't have 50+ hours of play time previous to the expansion, you should waste all your time playing a class you don't like just to get them.

One could argue that a player who's not a medic-phile doesn't need the unlockables. I would argue they should have access. You never know when one, (the Kritzkreig, especially) may be useful in turning the tide of a match. Though I despise playing medic, I'll do it if I think it will benefit my team. The best TF2 player is a versatile one and having the entire stable of unlockables would only make you more so.

What Valve should have done, if they insist on all of these achievements, is made them and the unlockables mutually exclusive with the weapons being available from the get-go. They did an excellent job of balancing two of the weapons perfectly with their old counterparts. Both the Blutsauger and Kritzkreig are different but equal to the needle gun and medic gun. The Ubersaw would have needed only small tweaks (perhaps make it's damage lower) to be the same way.

It just seems stupid to me to force people to play a class they don't want to. Valve claims it's just to get more players in a seldom-played class, but that will really only work for these first few months after the patch. Already, I find most public servers only ever have one or two medics in them at any one time. Not only that, but the achievements encourage bad gameplay.

As far as the actual servers go, you get what you ask for. I've gotten most of my medic achievements via a grind server, but I take care to not do anything to annihilate my stats. I'll console kill myself every once in a while during achievements like the needle-gunning of 50 scouts. I don't visit servers that healing rates or HP levels. If your stats get screwed up, it's your own fault. I would expect (and hope) that Valve wouldn't correct anyone's stats who were altered in this way.

why does it matter if your stats are screwed up??? its just stats, its not like its going to effect your life.

Achievement servers? ffs

ya that's what i thought
why not just play the game normally? or try your best in a normal situation to actually earn the achievements?
it's more fun that way IMO

I managed to eff up my stats last night. I was knackered and Digi asked me to play with him. AciD ended up setting up a server with an achievement map. I got about 10 or 12 achievements. It wasn't so bad because I got the Kritz, but I mildly wish I hadn't. I managed to get 34 points, though, in one round after forgetting to kill myself -_-
