Adblock is freaking amazing!

Funny thing about that I don't have to justify anything.

And that is exactly what is happening.

You do a good job at making such a stupid issue look bigger than it is. Internet hosting being so mainstream these days is dirt bloody cheap. You can run your own sites on your own hardware and then only have to pay for your internet connection and a domain name. I certainly haven't seen any online business in my country dying and if any have it's because they are crappy and not thought out.

I host a few of my own sites which are currently down so I can get around to updating them a bit. If you want ping kyorisu.homelinux.net a free domain running on a server that costs me maybe $5 a month in electricity. Actually if you try and visit you might get hit by a random template. Lighttpd is being wierd atm and displaying content when it shouldn't be.

And you sound like the people that try to justify downloading music, games, and movies illegally by saying they are sticking it to the man when the fact is you aren't some kind of online warrior, they are just a theif. Do I download music once in a while? Sure I do, but I don't try to justify it with bullshit excuses.

Uhh... where did this thread include discussion about illegally gained music, games and movies? You're talking about something that isn't even relevant to this thread. Do you honestly think blocking ads is on par with piracy?

Besides, when did you get so uptight? I took the liberal swing and you took the conservative swing.

In my opinion it is.

Honestly I don't know, I must love arguing with you.

Then you need a reality check. I'm out of this one your views are too ****ed up for my liking.

Same... I mean... come on, on par with piracy? For ****s sake man... lighten up and quit being so delusional. It's not even in the same universe as piracy.

I wasn't talking to you in that case, Raziaar on the other hand did try to justify it.

That's good for you. Unfortunately a lot of other people that put up web sites have a lot more ambition than hosting a simple web site nobody will ever see on a computer in their basement hooked up to their crappy internet connection. But again, that's just my opinion.

This conversation is dragging on with no end in sight but what the hell, care to explain why you think it's any different?

Record sales are in the shitter, movie sales are also going down. The reason for this is more and more people steal this content because they figured out how to get around paying for it. The exact same thing will happen with internet ads as more people wise up to how they can block those ads.

Well... because piracy is stealing things that don't belong to you. Ad blocking is... well, blocking people from trying to force their wares on you. I close the door on them just like I do the Jehovah's Witnesses, because I don't want any. I don't even take their pamphlet.

It amazes me how you can't even understand this concept. It's like... blocking the ads on somebodies website and then viewing their website is stealing to you, even though that website is free for me to view. I don't have to register, and I don't have to pay. Even if I did have to register, it's most often free of charge. Why? Because it's free. Websites that aren't free should charge. And they do. Websites that aren't free, feel free to have ads on your page, but it's no guarantee that every joe is going to be a schmuck and view them. It also doesn't mean they are thieves, because your site is FREE.

And they can and it's bloody cheap to do so. See right here you've proven you no jack shit about anything internet related. My server is more than "simple" it runs all the fancy shit like any other host will provide. Email, DNS, PHP, Perl, SQL, whatever else you bloody want. The system itself is more than capable of supplying any site out there and is only limited by it's HDDs and 1Mb/s upload. However, I've said before hosting is CHEAP. Really your logic is broken "I need ads to run big site" wtf that's retarded. Go earn the money so you can run a big site and then go do it and have ads anyway as a bonus to your income. Earlier you said small sites... small businesses can run their shit easily at $20-$50 a month which is bloody CHEAP.

I just though I'd point out how idiotic your examples are and then be done with you on the matter. Seriously basement I love it.

Round and round we go.

Did you understand me when I said that even if the website you are viewing appears to be free the real cost of you viewing that website is for you to download a simple advertiser's image?

Do we have an understanding on that part or not?

And they can and it's bloody cheap to do so.

It's bloody cheap, for who? Servers have been going down in price, I'll give you that. But a cheap server will not work when you need to run thousands of queries to a database server, process advanced scripts, and then use the bandwidth to fetch that data. This doesn't take in to account the time it takes to do all this. Your time might not be worth much, but my time certainly isn't cheap. If I want to make a living off a web site I have to give up my day job, which pays fairly decently. But I'll stop here now, if you guys can't get your head around the simple fact of life that everything in this world costs money than there is nothing more than I can say. I'm sure that if you guys see something at those store and you think the price is too steep you simply steel it.

Bad luck? You can't have everything and clearly you cannot afford to run such a site. Yes stuff costs money and I'm sorry you cannot afford it without resulting to ads, Bad ****ing luck. Go get a better job and quit your bitching. It's not my problem you can't have what you want because people realized they don't want to view your crappy ads and decided to block them. I feel the urge to keep replying because your outright stupidity amazes me in many ways.

"People should load my ads so I can run this site that takes so much of my precious time I cannot be a productive member of society and earn a normal wage like everyone else."

Did it ever strike you to maybe possibly get someone else involved? Spread the workload so you can afford to run the site. Ads should only ever be considered a benefit to your income, you should never rely on them to keep a site running.

No... because websites don't say 'View these ads or get the **** off my site'.

When I see a website that has a declaration that you are required to view ads to view their website, I'll let you know.

Anyways... I'm done with this thread until some fresh blood comes in... I doubt anybody else will be coming in sharing the same views because it's quite honestly, pretty ludicrous.

I see you edited your post so I'll continue my response here.

What was the maximum load you have ever had on this server? What kind of operating system are you running on it? What kind of web server? How many users connect to it on a daily basis? What was the max users you had connected at one time? How many tables does your database have? How many rows? When you say you have SQL what kind of SQL?

Many people seem to think that because they installed all of this that their system is capable of handling it. Throw a couple thousand requests at that and suddenly their crappy basement server isn't so special. And wow, a 1Mb/s uplink, that's like 125 kilobytes up a second, aren't you special.

I know server and networking costs have gone down over the years, but to take your basement server and use it as an example to say hosting any type of web site is cheap is arrogant at best. And I don't mean to be rude dude, but come on.

Shit I meant MB/s.

Throw a couple thousand requests at that and suddenly their crappy basement server isn't so special.

Theres a reason it's a home server to be used for basic applications. Cheap solutions are also available. I don't care if you run some hot shot huge website that requires a megaton of processing power and bandwidth. That's your own damn problem, go earn some damn money and stop relying on ads. Or get more people involved to help run and maintain the damn thing whilst chipping in for it's monthly cost.

Anyway max load has been about 250ish users when it was once used to host a major information page at a lan. I don't see any reason to bore people with technical details you and I seemingly know what the heck we are on about.

I'll say it again I'M SORRY YOU'RE A POOR BASTARD.

I know server and networking costs have gone down over the years, but to take your basement server and use it as an example to say hosting any type of web site is cheap is arrogant at best. And I don't mean to be rude dude, but come on.

Unless I'm mistaken part of your argument has been that people cannot afford to run their simple little site without ads. And no it isn't a basement why the **** would I keep computers in a room with no ventilation? Besides I don't have a basement.

Ads should only ever be considered a benefit to your income, you should never rely on them to keep a site running.

Xcellerate, reread this thread, that's not true as has been pointed out over and over.

Kyorisu, if I can't get you to agree that your example of a "basement server" doesn't apply to everything out there then I really can't keep up this discussion with you. You say you had 250 users on LAN, LAN doesn't have the same bandwidth restrictions as WAN does. And how much do you pay for a 1MB/s uplink? I have never seen anything close to that speed on a home connection, my cable connection which is the fastest in the southwest from what I heard only goes up to 768 Mb/s, if you really have a 8Mb/s uplink I envy you.

Obviously not everybody is making web sites to make money. But a lot of people are. And they ask you to pay for viewing that web site through an advertisement download. If you think that cost is too high you shouldn't be viewing that web site. Its on the same level as going to a store, saying you think the cost of a product is too high, and then stealing it. Many web site owners do not put in a terms of use, most don't have the capability to do that and even if they did it would be a waste of time as nobody would listen, as you 2 have proven. So what you are doing is certainly not illegal but I stand by my statement that it is not moral.

You keep editing posts before I get a chance to respond to them. But anyway, I'll leave my response above the last one for now, I have work to get back to. Laters.

/edit meh making fun of peoples income isn't that funny. Also I'm the type of person that makes a post and then has another thought pop into their head.

Obviously not everybody is making web sites to make money. But a lot of people are. And they ask you to pay for viewing that web site through an advertisement download. If you think that cost is too high you shouldn't be viewing that web site.

But I don't visit sites that explicitly ask I view the ads. And yeah my home connection is something many Australian ISPs don't offer, mainly to do with my location being in the CBD and near to a certain building. Working for a certain company and being able to afford a connection with special privileges. Granted to even get such a thing I had to suck up royally to several people whom I now want to kill. Sure I earn a fair bit of money and work for it all the same. These guys though, damn they do nigh nothing to earn their bastardly huge salary.

/sigh. My point still stands one should never rely on advertising, it's only a bonus as not everyone wants or is going to be able to see it. I guess the example there is internet gateways at schools/libraries which block ads and other misc content.

I am not stealing when I visit a page and don't view it's ads, I am not under any obligation to view ads even if asked to do so. Until there is a specific rule in place that require viewing the ads as a condition of use I will not view the ads.

Xcellerate, reread this thread, that's not true as has been pointed out over and over.

Well I only say it because a guy in my MIS class runs a website and he was talking about ad's last week and he said he makes 3/10's of a cent each time somebody clicks the ad.
