Age of Empires 3

wow I just saw three screen shots and they look amazing.

Apparnatly the game is also using the havoc physics engine. It will be interesting to see if it is just for visual elements or if it will actually be a part of the gameplay.

In one of the pictures there is 2 gold cannons :naughty:

The one screenshot with the base on a hilltop looks really cool. I hope I will be able to make some easily defendable bases this time.

I hope to get the pcgamer issue soon and read all about it. It looks like ensemble is focusing heavily on gameplay. This is a good thing. :D

They claim that in multiplayer mode there will be 3 civilizations. The french, spanish and british. They havent confirmed anymore, sadly I dont think we will see a canadian civilization because we didnt get out independence till 1867. We may howevor see an american civilization because I believe the american war of independence was 1775-1783. Someone correct me if im wrong because it has been a while. It would be cool to have a native civilization also.

Woohoo! AoK fluked me through 3 years of history lessons. :>

It's looking really wonderful from the scans and stuff I've seen so far. It's drawing graphically with Doom 3, by the looks of it, which is brilliant for a RTS.

Oh, by the way, Ensemble's initial release should come tomorrow!

I hope the release a beta for us fileplanet subscibers befor release.

I meant the initial press release, no betas or what not, in case of confusion.

Doesnt look like a game i would play. More into the future settings.

Its only out if you are a subsciber. I know for sure it not in circulation at retail yet.

Yays, i loved the game. But i always lost on msn gaming zone:( bastards being better then me

I love the look of those new shadows :)

I dont like that age..I rather have nights or vikings or something..

AOE 3 looks pretty sweet. Caesar 3 and Starcraft are pretty cool too.

The game begins in 1500 A.D. and follows American history up through 1850. The game uses the Havocs physics engine and multiplayer will feature 8 civilizations.

Hmm I wonder what civs they will have. My guesses: British, Austrian, French, Spain, Russian, American, China and Japan.

Nah, it follows colonial history, so out go Russia, China, Japan and Germany. I suspect Holland, Portugal and some native tribes will be there in the end.

heh, I used to love the AOE games. I like starcraft better, probably will like SC better than AOE 3 as well, but it'll be fun for a while anyway.

Looks like a screenshot with more bloom and cover-up than Oblivion and Guild Wars combined.

Looking at the screen shot with the buildings on the rage forums I hope the AI is programmed to use trees and buildings as cover to give an armour boost or something along those lines.

I hate to hype graphics becauase graphics are not what makes an RTS game great. But these graphics are amazing concidering they are for a RTS game. I actually feel like I am in the colonial time period. They shadows look wonderful and the details in all of the screenshots are amazing. The screen shots look a little claustraphobic (especially the one with the buildings) But if you are able to move the camera any where you want I dont think that will be a very big problem. The fact that the units appear a solid colour behind the buildings will help a lot. Even if you can move the camera wherever you want it may become a pain having to readjust the camera in large battles or whenever you have to micromanage your units. Another problem is the bricks look very flat on the buildings and one of the firepit around the natives has no geomatry at all. I know that they dont want the system requirments to be to high but....
Dont use bump mapping to compensate for geomatry that should actually be there. Bump mapping should only ever be used for very light topical irregularities such as scratches, pitting or general subtle unevenness. This gives highlights and reflections on a surface a definate contour. Also as a genreal rule, any indentation or irregularity on a surface that is deeper then 1mm should either be modelled or created by displacement mapping.

I realize that most people wont be looking at the game objects in to much detail but some objects look extremely flat. This is just a minor thing that annoys me but like I said befor you wont be looking at objects in to much detail in an RTS game. The gameplay is what the devs should be really focusing on and I know the wont dissapoint. Also I hope that the terrain can be used stratgecially. IE you get more armour or attack points for being on the top of a hill. And the enemy that is trying to advance up a hill gets less armour and attack points.

It's going to need God's PC to run.
I don't like the era it's set in, but I'm sure Ensemble will make it interesting.

in that main battle pic the bloom affect is a little over-the-top, but in the other pic with the town on near the cliff, it looks excellent.

that's going to be suicide for your computer to run :(

It's impressive though :)

The thing is that when you play with an RTS engine, at say around 20fps you wouldn't feel the choppy-ness as much as in a FPS.

I don't mind if I'm playing an RTS and it runs at 24 frames per second. I can't stand going below 60 on UT in Instagib though. :dozey:

One thing that worries me about this game is that the developers made the engine so graphical, you won't be able to zoom out ala warhammer 40k and other recent RTSs, that pisses me off. I want to see my entire town in one screen.

It does look very nice - hopefully there will be more to it AoE3 than just new gfx/effects and setting.

Too many developers get away with releasing the same titles over and over again with just better visuals. Shadows and ragdolls are nice - but not nearly enough on there own. Let's hope the gameplay is improved :)

Sigh, from the looks of it each solider is treated like an indivudual unit rather then a part of a much larger unit, as is realistic and better for gameplay IMO.

But not how the Age series operates.

I am sorry but sequels should improve upon gameplay as well. Its just a personal preference and with 3 RTS games that uses sush a system (Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Rome: Total War and Battle for middle earth) released last year I guess I got spoiled.

As it currently stands its not on my must have list.

They're looking towards the second half of 2005 as a release date.

The game looks really impressive, i'll say that. But i wont get my hope up until i know how it will play/run on my machine...

There is such a thing as 'grouping', you know.

I dont see why lots of people are doubting that this wont run on their machine. It wont be any harder on your machine then doom 3 is and secondly you dont need it to run at a constant 60 FPS. 30FPS should be enough to run any RTS game. When rise of nations first came out I was in alaska on a fishing trip with my family (salmon fishing) but at night I would pull out the laptop and play rise of nation. The laptop wasnt great. 128mb's of ram, 16 mb videocard and a 500mhz celron but it still ran rise of nations at just over 15FPS. It was more then enough for me to enjoy the game.

Hopefully there are some cool tactics with building train lines and stuff. If the train is just pre-placed for like the single player campaign I will be angry

Grouping wont cut it, there is only 10 number keys.

Besides even with each solider belonging to a larger unit I use grouping anyway.
