Age old problem with splines

Does anyone know why when you put the surface modifier on splines they always look crap?

Example in the pictures. 1.jpg shows the spline object connected properly, when it's surfaced in 2.jpg it looks like crap compared to the perfect cylinder on the right, just made with standard primitives. The surfaced object has shading problems which just look messy.

Yes you can increase the steps but it takes the poly count to insane levels. Has anyone ever figured out a solution to this if there is one?

i have no idea how to solve your problem.. but, my I ask why this metid for modelling? specially in max?
 
I'm not sure, it just seemed to make the most sense to me when i was looking at the different ways to model things.
