Alan Wake | Building the Thriller

What spec couch will you need in order to enjoy this properly? My current couch is years old and I'm worried that playing Alan Wake on it would be pointless.

nothing groundbreaking

This looks pretty interesting. The lighting is really good. Not a huge fan of Alan's voice actor though... he sounds more like a documentary narrator than a protagonist.

Ign, which I only moderately trust for reviews gave it a 9/10. I'm sure Eurogamer is much more trustworthy.

It would score much better if it were still for PC and not the dumbed-down and technologically-hamstrung 360-only version. Seriously, did you see that lame-ass "tornado" in the current version?? Did you see it in the original?! Ugh. The game was SICK when it was first shown and it looks precious little like that awesomeness now sadly.

Yeah, damn XB360s and PS3s.

Anyway, I will be getting the game, but it's a shame they abandoned the original concept(Which was an open-ended Twin Peaks styled game), a game like Deadly Premonition but with higher production values would be awesome and that was partly what the original concept of Alan Wake was.

Just for pointing out facts though, the tornado we saw was part of a section specifically made for tech demonstration purposes, there's no telling if it would have been in the PC version either since it was confirmed that it was specifically designed to showcase the new quad-cores from Intel back then.

I thought about that as I was typing but decided I would leave it in because there was no good reason to think it would NOT be put in at that time anyway. I think the limitations of the platform shrank the scope of the game, frankly. I think the development history was so full of bumps that things had to be trimmed all over the place in order to release a game that was a reasonable facsimile of the original concept and for a cost that was somewhat recoupable. All of the good reviews only serve to tell me that there was SO MUCH gamer hype behind this game for SO LONG that no one will be giving it too low a score no matter what. It smells just as awful as the gaming mags in Japan reviewing certain games from certain publishers WAY too highly based on ad revenue as opposed to the merits of the game itself.

Kotaku loves it.

I am open to the potential of the year's games, but I still can't imagine that Alan Wake will be topped in 2010. It tells a story that is engaging, and yes, emotional. It makes you care, it delivers scares. But most importantly it redefines interactive storytelling. More aptly put, Alan Wake finally delivers on a phrase so overused that it has become a joke.

kotaku is a piece of shit.

No they're not.

Also, IGN was paid as well. If not Kotaku, IGN definitely were.

hey guys how bout we actually play the game first before we all start circle-jerk hating for the sake of hating. i mean i know they shafted a few of you which is a kinda ok reason to get all hurf durf on the game but y'know, let's give it a go.

if everyone wants to get all upset that they don't think the game is going to deliver in terms of gameplay or story, let's not get all up in arms about the downgrade in technology as lets face it, whether a tornado looks batshit-upgrade price crazy or affordable and still damned good console wise, it won't matter too much.

You guys ever consider that competing publishers might pay to have competing games' scores lowered?

Ah, it's mind blowing just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Maybe? I don't know. Just considered it for the first time.

Anyway, Metacritic is a better idea; you've got the average.

This isn't politics, VT.
This is video games.

I think.
Right?

"Hey guys look at how horrible these review scores are, heh."

"Well actually, an 83 isn't ba--"

"UNTRUSTWORTHY SOURCES. PAID REVIEWERS. CONSOOOOOLEEEESSSSSSSS."

I ****ing love this forum sometimes.

Its an ongoing trend we have.

Why break perfection?

Also, its a flashlight game. How could it get an 80+ score without money changing hands? It IS Microsoft too.

GamingTrend:
Alan Wake is definitely art, and is well written enough to keep my wife and I on the edge of our seats from beginning to end.

LOL! The dipshit from GamingTrend acts like having a game to enjoy with your wife is a good thing!! If I wanted that I would get this:

maybe his wife plays games, maybe his wife likes a good story, or maybe this is halflife2.net and you are all literally gay.

Everyone knows people who write for video gaming editorials don't have any taste in literature!
