Alan Wake | Building the Thriller

i just went to the gaming trend site. there's two minutes i'll never get back. it reads like the website of the computer and tabletop gaming club at your local community college.

also, has gaming design really gotten SO ****ING COMPLACENT AND LAZY that every single game now has to include 100 hidden trinkets and 225 secret baubles and 500 lost skin flakes for slack-jawed completionists to find?

Women can't play games. They lack the opposable thumb.

Ha!

If it makes you feel better reading your post was also time I will never get back.

Collecting things is in like every game ever in some shape or form. Some people like collecting things, some people dont. Guess what? Chances are, you wont have to go get 100 hidden trinkets to beat the game. Thats right! You can do none of that stuff, and still enjoy yourself!

Yes, lets dedicate and waste precious dev time to lure people with mental disorders into paying us money to collect stupid shit.

what about the antlion maggots in hl2: episode 2

and the gnome

uh... those included? In fact, my very first thought was the grubs.

The maggots were probably already in there for atmosphere, so they just added in an achievement for killing all of them.

Gnome was just Valve trolling everyone.

i do not understand your question krunn

but yeah the grubs. i dunno, like adrik said a lot of games have these things strewn about them, i can think back as far as GTA III and a lot of people get kicks out of finding stuff. like he also said, you don't have to go out looking for them and i can't imagine it takes the devs much effort to throw a load of items over the game except for maybe the ones that are tricky to reach and require good observation or whatever.

i like to think they have a giant pepper pot that they through all the variables into and just sprinkle them over the map from the skybox, but that would be silly.

Well I pre-ordered the game but I don't plan on collecting anything so there you go!

I don't plan on collecting anything but knowing my OCD and achievements I probably will anyway.

my point was more that most reviews nowadays seem to have this copy and pasted into them: "the single player portion will only run you about six to eight hours, but there are over X vials of cat urine hidden throughout, extending the game time for collectors."

i guess i consider this cheap and easy way to add implied length, since it always gets a mention in reviews as an asset.

i was thinking the same thing, but you put the imagery together much better than i was going to!

for some reason i said through instead of throw. hmm.

Ah, that does make me feel better, just like the Starcraft 2 one did and continues to do.

I didn't ask one.

You dont think it takes much time to place and test the positioning of 333 of them?

You missed my point... so there you go!

well you out a question mark in your post and i didn't get it

and sure it probably takes a bit of time, but i can't imagine it's game breaking. who knows, maybe they'll be world renown for their placements and it'll be like the biggest thing in the world but i can't imagine so. i don't think we're gonna get anywhere here.

so I just learned about a setpiece in the game and at one point you defend the stage of a heavy metal show against an endless stream of shadows while cheesy 80s viking metal plays and the stage pyrotechnics can be used as weapons.

If that didn't sell the game for you, **** you.

yeah but L4D2 was DLC disguised as a full game, they had to sell you one way or another.

It did a very good job disguising itself as a full game, especially with more content than the original. Consider me fooled.

You needn't be so protective, Adrik, I actually like the look of Alan Wake. BUT YOU LEAVE MY VALVE BABIES ALONE.

Adrik is sad because no one likes his game that stole from L4D2 so now he trolls you but HIS HEART'S NOT IN IT.

L4D2 wasn't the first. Ragnarock in Max Payne. You can kill goons with the pyrotechnics backstage and shit. Also in one Hitman game. Contracts maybe. Edit: Nope. It's in Blood Money.

ITT if a certain setting or game mechanic is used in a Valve game everyone will scream plagiarism if some other game uses something similar, regardless if said setting and game mechanic existed prior to said Valve game.

Its ok bro im just J.K. Rowling you right now

So I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition because im a total sucker for shit like this:

does the collectors edition come with a fleshlight?

Wellll

instead of a glorified add campaign for the game I think they should consider making a proper full blown TV series. We haven't had a show like Twin Peaks in a long time.

04:43 - cheap CGI is cheap

is this what game is about? alan kills a deer, deers comes back from heaven for a revenge.

Hmm...Seems they're making the same mistake as Heavy Rain. I loved Heavy Rain, but the hype the developers were giving it under the "games are art" umbrella exposed it to more scrutiny than it probably deserved. Expectations become painfully high once you start making claims that your game is comparable to other, more established art forms. While it is admirable that aspirations are higher than the norm for such developers, making such bold, unproven claims makes them seem like children attempting to impress older peers. But despite that, they're a lot better than the Activision alternative for legitimising the game market.

Such a shame they cancelled the PC release, I'd love to see what that engine could achieve on more powerful hardware.

Well, they've compared it to other forms of media, but I don't think anyone at Remedy has actually called it art (unlike that Heavy Rain guy). So this is more a case of hype than hubris.

doesn't even know what genre it's supposed to be in?

is that really a bad thing? that's like saying i don't like this particular release of music because it encompasses more than one style.

i always thought alan wake was quite obviously marketed as a thriller/horror, anyway.
