YouGamers: So - last two questions, we promise! The biggest things with PCs at the moment are Windows Vista and DirectX 10. Anything special for DX10?

M?ki: [puts on a formal-sounding voice] We haven?t announced anything for DX10 yet?

YouGamers: Just to confirm things then, the PC version is only for Windows Vista and not for XP machines?

J?rvilehto: That's correct - the game is Vista exclusive

Yet another sad sad day for us PC gamers. And those guys don't seem to be using f***ing DX10 either (since its being developed for the 360 as well, and the rather evasive comment above). Vista, heralded as the savior of PC gaming is actually bringing its demise faster imo.

NO! **** NO! **** NO!

Crap!

EDIT: Oh god, for a moment I thought it said "Xbox exclusive".

Vista exclusive isn't good either! **** **** **** ****! HELL NO!

****

**** you Microsoft.

Oh well, I guess I have to give in to their power at some point.

Too bad all other older games blow on vista. So looks like you will need 2 different PCs to play new games and old games. Thanks Microsoft.

Ah, well good thing that I upgraded then. Too bad that the game will probably run like ass on my computer though.

Oh well. I guess they don't plan on selling very many copies... what is it? 5% of steam users have Vista?

How man of those machines can play DX10 games well?

1%?

LOL.

Hit them in their wallet. They might come around.

*hugs 360*

Come to the dark side guys, you know you want to

Seriously can anyone here think of a rational reason why Remedy would want to severely restrict its customer base? Anyone?

Paid off by microsoft so they can encourage more PC gamers to upgrade to vista?

That's all I can think of, outside of that I think this is a completely stupid thing to do.

Me thinks money has exchanged hands here. MS are trying to force people in either upgrading to Vista, which equals big $, or getting a 360. It's win win from their point of view.

Of course, some will choose to do neither, but tbh I doubt MS really care about those.

Oh well, there will come a time when I will acquire Vista. Microsoft deserves every penny I decide to pay them.

I plan on getting my version of Vista for a very reduced price. Still, the hardware needed for this game will tear into my bank account. Thank god I'm a working stiff now.

Well, they've just lost 95% of the PC gaming crowd...

I guess they figured out how usesless vista is and figure people need incentive to buy it.

this is old news
and i think they said they will use DX10, also you know this wont come out till xmas 2008 at least so you have much time upgrading\saving whatever you want to do

DigiQ8, source for that? On the official forums the word appears to be "SOMETIME in 2008", not xmas..

I thought this had been known for some while(?)

I also believe that a remedy guy told in an interview that the company wanted to push tecnology with the game. that they didn't want to feel restricted in designing the game by having to scale to older hardware/software. they wanted to go full out even if it meant that not anyone could play the game.(at release) can't remember where I saw it though...it was an developer Q&A interview somewhere...

What's the big deal? By whenever the game comes out in 08, most people will have Vista.

What I want to know is the game going to be worth spending over $400 for?

:|

Doesn't matter i have my Vista ultimate sitting on my desk. Installing it when i build my new pc.

* puts Alan Wake on the list of PC games I won't be buying *

If Microsoft thinks they'll force me to get Vista, they're surely mistaken.

Yeah, I have Vista sitting on my desk (read: torrents folder) too. I'm just waiting for a reason to install it.

then that means the console version(s) will be inferior in every way

They also said the 360 version would perform as well as quad core pc with top end gfx card. We'll have to wait and see, but I suspect both versions are going to great. Choose which platform you prefer and go for it.

Makes no sense to me, they'll have to scale for the consoles which by the time Alan Wake comes out will have been far surpassed by the latest PCs. I mean I plan on getting Vista anyway because of Direct3D 10 but if they're putting in the XBox 360 then why can't they provide a Direct3D 9 version for PC users?

Warbie: That may be the case because 4x the core != 4x the speed. In fact the more cores you have the less of a performance increase you'll experience. For example, let's say you've got an application that's been tuned exceptionally well for multiple cores and you get a 50% speed increase with 2 cores, by the time you get to a 100 cores you may only experience another 10% speed increase on top of the initial 50%, that's how quickly it levels off because it's impossible to parallel process everything. There's a formula somewhere to work this out, forgotten it though.

The Graphics card should make more of an impact though, but if they've tuned the XBox 360 version to run at say, a steady 30 FPS, which is the minimum Microsoft require your game to run at, then you won't really notice a huge speed increase if you move to a PC which runs at say 100 FPS. However as far as I'm aware the XBox 360 doesn't support Direct3D 10, which Alan Wake is said to use, so technically the PC version should look better than the XBox 360 version.

Fair points. You'll also have the option to run at a higher res, change draw distance etc. Still, a friend of mine has a top end gaming pc (dx10 card, dual core etc) and we both agreed that nothing's come out as technically impressive as Gears of War - infact I think it'd struggle in with GoW in some areas. It takes that much more raw power for games to run as well on a pc as they do on a console with considerably less - it always has.

I agree that there's no reason Alan Wake shouldn't work on dx9 gfx cards - it makes no sense.

Halo 2's on Vista due to the online play.

Alan Wake has no plausible reason to be Vista exclusive. At all.
Except for the money-grubbing c*nts at Microsoft.

I don't want to spend ?500 on a ****ing game. I just want to play it...

Easier to develop and test for. Have it on one OS, and it severly limits your choices of how many hardware configurations there are, and less work and money they have to spend.

And also, there are a lot of people moving to Vista, so when the game comes out, there will be even more.

If you don't want it for Vista, then get the 360. Two big install bases, and it costs them less money. They are a business after all.

*hugs 360 and refuses to let go*

I'm staying away from vista for as long as possible! M$, You can't make me!!

I thought that was common knowledge since... some time ago. :?

If coming out late 2008 (as Dig implied) then DX10 will be running very well (i predict) and it will make Vista worth it after SP1 sorts out issues that people have with it
