Algeria shuts down internet and Facebook as protest mounts.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...-internet-and-Facebook-as-protest-mounts.html
Internet providers were shut down and Facebook accounts deleted across Algeria on Saturday as thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators were arrested in violent street demonstrations.
Plastic bullets and tear gas were used to try and disperse large crowds in major cities and towns, with 30,000 riot police taking to the streets in Algiers alone.
There were also reports of journalists being targeted by state-sponsored thugs to stop reports of the disturbances being broadcast to the outside world.
But it was the government attack on the internet which was of particular significance to those calling for an end to President Abdelaziz Boutifleka's repressive regime.

On Saturday at least 500 had been arrested by early evening in Algiers alone, with hundreds more in Annaba, Constantine and Oran taking part in the so-called February 12 Revolution.
"The police station cells are overflowing," said Sofiane Hamidouche, a demonstrator in Annaba.
"There are running battles taking place all over the city. It's chaos. As night falls the situation will get worse."
Algeria has the eighth largest reserves of natural gas in the world, and is also oil-rich, but its youthful population suffers mass unemployment, a chronic lack of housing, and widespread poverty. Political corruption is also endemic.

I'm getting a serious case of Deja Vu here.

Governments that shut down the internet like that are the kind of countries that deserve their government to be changed.

These recent internet shutting down countries and their revolts should give our government the ****ing common sense to know that we're way above that kind of tactic of information suppression.

The whole world is revolting (?).

Seemingly the whole of the arab world. Which is interesting. It could mean a bright, new, democratic future for the Middle East. Or numerous civil wars that continue for years. Hopefully the former.

You might as well call this thread The Middle-Eastern Revolt of 2011. Besides Algeria there were protests (again) in Egypt, protests for a fourth day in a row in Yemen, Iran working very hard to keep the opposition from protesting and a 'Day of Rage' in Bahrain. Also, the Palestinian cabinet resigned after calls for political reform and Syria sent a 19 year old girl to jail for blogging critically about the government. And these are just the 'main stories'. There isn't a country in the whole region where there hasn't been some form of civil discontent lately, Oman and Israel being the only exceptions afaik. If anything it is reminiscent of 1848, the year when half of Europe revolted in support of social and political reform. Back then change did eventually happen but it took a couple of decades.

I like to romanticize about people standing up for democracy and overthrowing their dictators just as much as the next chap, but in all honesty, I have very high doubt about a good ending to these Arab revolutions. Democracy is a long process, and these countries have no democratic traditions.

I suggest we merge this thread and any other threads related to the uprisings in the Middle East with the 'Egyptian uprising' thread. We should also rename that thread as 'Arab World Protests,' so we can discuss everything happening in one simple place. The only reason I say this is that there are just way too many countries protesting right now to make individual threads on.

What will we name the thread when America does it next?

The "I can't believe these apathetic f*cks care this much, also they're stupid as hell what are they even so upset about?" thread.

Egypt wannabes. Go for it.

lol nope. Egypt was following Tunisia's example. Tunisia was the first domino, they peacefully demonstrated and overthrew their government. Egypt and the rest of the middle east seems to be following.

Actually, I thought Algeria was in South America.

Argentina.

Is this the beginning of a New World Order?

I hope not. My combat boots are still yet to arrive. :/

What does this even have to do with the promotion of a mass reordering of wealth and power?

SUCH A GOOD ****ING BUDDHIST.

The next thread I want to see is "North Korean Uprising"

Of course that'd prolly be followed by "North Korean Security Units Kill 2 Million Civilians with Tanks"

Depressing but true. I don't think they'd be afraid to have a massacre.

Yeah it's been quite clear that maintaining actual constituents isn't high on their list of priorities.

Of course that'd prolly be followed by "North Korean Security Units Kill 2 Million Civilians with Tanks"

Which would be followed by "South Korean Military invades North Korea and destroyed all North Korean cities due to wanting to use all the ordinance its built up over the years."

Which would then be followed by "Stop making such long thread titles, assholes."

Fun fact. I knew a girl in highschool who couldn't find Africa on a map.

seems like the whole Middle East is uprising. sorry I haven't been following any news lately but I'm happy for these people if they can pull this through.

Listen guys, I know some of you lack the necessary brainpower to understand geography, but I'm gonna outline the most important facts:

There are four continents: North America, South America, East America, West America

There are four countries: United States of America, United States, America, USA

At least that's what they teach me.

how long til those fags at RT blame the U.S for this somehow?

Well everytime I hear a mention of this on the news there's always this ominous "It's also a huge threat to US security" at the end of almost every sentence but they never mention why. :/

Nothing, I just want my f*cking boots before a NWO comes into place & the postage system falls in disarray.
LOL so funny man, I acted like a tool here once, get over it.
