Cool dx7 :D

Edit: what will the dx7 do in the game?

What wont i get like fancy lights and water ect ect?
you won't get dynamic refraction, no bump mapping and generally details will be less like static entities and lower resolution textures

It won't get anything really, DX8 was the first with per pixel shaders. So no bump maps or reflective or refractive water.

you'll still have refraction iirc... it just won't be dynamic, more like pre-set models (which can still look good)... hope I'm right on that one

Hmm, i really dont need that.

Though my bro might be getting a radeon 9800pro or xt or something thats coming out soon.

So i might get his Geforce 4 ti4400.

a 4400 will be perfect for your needs; what kinda CPU and memory do you have?

Not28 it should run just fine, I'm using a Gf4 Ti4600 as well. The different will be minimal from Dx9 to Dx8.1. And further more anyone worrying, you should and can run Dx9 on Dx8 cards as it fixes bugs ect it shouldn't present problems, its usually better to run newer software as it sometimes fixes issues so it won't hurt the performance of your Dx8 card at all.

"will this run on my 486"

"it did spreadsheat so well"

but seriously if you want to drool over hl2 get a radeon.

im getting a 9600 pro. best bang per buck.

I still think a 9700 non-pro is the best card if you can find it for under $200... very well worth the money

I thought about getting one but I'm going to wait a while, haven't had my Gf4 Ti4600 all that long and I'd rather let some prices drop. I just didn't see the benefit of $200 over the card I have now, really can't afford it, if I could then I wouldn't worry and just have a beast of a gpu. heh. But I do agree if you have a somewhat slower/older card its a good idea to change.

For your information, GF4 Ti cards aren't DX8, they're DX8.1, a pretty big difference. They'll run HL2 just fine, the problem lies with the FX cards running DX9 or the special designed path, not the older cards.

DX8.1 supports fresnel water, will look slightly better on a dx9 compliant card though.

DX8.1 will have about 90% of the HL2 effects and shaders. For the moment that is because new shaders and effects will be created, exclusively for DX9 hardware. So if you have a DX8.1 card right now, it's not worth upgrading to a newer one really to run HL2 well, but you should in the future.

actually I belive the geforce 4 is a dx8 card only, its shader version is 1.3, which I belive falls under dx8 (I could be wrong) 1.4 falls under 8.1, the only diffrence between the two is that 1.4 gets it done faster then 1.3 (they still end up with the same result)

Yep, all G4 are DX8, not 8.1. Only some of the radeons (9000, 9200 or something) are 8.1. (and of course the FX and 9x00 since they can do 1.4 too)

Actually, I think a lot of people have forgotten what it's like to have a Geforce2 Pro 64MB. I have one and can tell you that not only is it a fully DX 7 compliant card, but it can also do bump mapping as well as tons of other things that we normally reserve for "better" cards. Just look at 3DMark2001 - my card runs that benchmark (including bump-mapping) just fine.

Don't get me wrong. HL2 will not be as pretty with my Geforce2, and as such I plan to get a 9600 Pro for around $120. That is the best deal currently on the market.

do you mean the dot3 bump mapping or whatever its called? my old Geforce 256 can do that.

Closed. Loads of OT posts and spam.

No, with a ti4200 you cannot experience all effects. It is a DX 8 card, and HL2 is a DX9 game(backwards compatible of course) If you want all effects, youll need a DX 9 card, and for help on deciding read the stickies at the top of the forum.
