Always bet on Duke

He really is.
Also, that video didn't do much for me.
Very unflattering footage when compared to the 2001 video.

Speaking of which, when are we going to get a trailer of this new one?

From what i have heard, the footage is of the PC version yet he's playing it with a 360 controller.
How stupid is that? You can even see that the guy playing it sucks at it horribly.

What I find really disappointing is that they took out Duke's kick melee... but he will still gladly kick down a door.

:|

Also the gameplay seemed extremely standard. Nothing new or exciting to see. The cyclops just looked like a high-poly Gargantua from HL1's "Power Up" - it even had the Garg's stomp-based energy attack. And all the over-the-top "humor" seems like it's all just a half-assed surface recreation of the original's ridiculous obnoxiousness, but without any of the tongue-in-cheek feeling. It seems like everything new in the game has nothing at all to do with the Duke Nukem franchise, and is often usurping classic aspects in favour of bland mainstream appeal.

I'm really respecting Gearbox less and less every day.

"Hey I'm not even gonna talk any more cause you've been jerked around enough, right? Okay so... I'll just keep talking for a few minutes then. Cause we're gonna show you the game. Now. Right now. Totally not stalling for time... okay so here's Duke pissing and drawing a dick lol. Welp don't want to overload your senses so we'd better shut it off again for a bit."

WHAT THE **** IS THIS.

yeah wtf was that all about?! o_O

anyway it looked fine i guess kinda funny but i just cant see anything great or even that bad about it

I never played the original games so I am genuinely asking: wasn't Duke Nukem a simple Doom clone, or was it special from a gameplay perspective?

Duke Nukem was a platformer for the first two titles. Only with Duke Nukem 3D did it change into a classic First Person Shooter with loads of content.

It wasn't a simple Doom clone. It featured rich environments (Los Angeles and surrounding locations, various space stations and Moon bases, Shrapnel City, Hawaii and DC...), varied weapons (apart from standard guns like a pistol, shotgun or rocket launcher, it also had the freezer, shrinker, trip bombs, pipe bombs, microwave emitter), interesting enemies, proper bosses and mini-bosses and a protagonist with far more charisma than the bipedal brick the Doom marine is.

Oh yeah, it was also awesome. Really, really awesome. Strippers!

And it was fairly interactive for its time.
You could turn lights on and off, use water fountains, etc.

I remember playing billiards in that one room. That shit blew my mind. I'd never seen that before in that kind of game. God damn, I wanna reinstall Duke3D now. I'm starting to remember all the environments, like the cineplex, the city street where you blew up the building revealing a man to the sewers with octobrains, and that you could throw pipebombs down and have them appear magically up in the sky above falling down into the sewer again in an infinite loop.

It'll be really funny if DN3D is more feature-rich than DNF.

idk i've never played them either :|

The rich environments and splendid map-making of DN3D were amazing, on par with those of Blood.

Every time Randy Pitchford stands on stage, he acts like a giggling little schoolboy showing porn to his friends.

It's also sad to think people could get excited over the abillity to take a virtual piss in a 3D urinal, but I guess some people really missed that in their lives.

It's a throwback to the original Duke 3D. The fact that you could take a leak and it would restore health was hilarious, useful, and mostly, memorable. That's why it got people excited, cause it reminded them of Duke 3D.

Who remembers taking a leak in the restroom in the first level and seeing "867-5309" on the wall? Also, opening a stall door and killing an assault trooper while he's taking a shit.

Randy Pitchford "explains" why Duke Nukem Forever will still stand tall in modern times:

Duke Nukem Forever has been in development since man thought the Earth was flat. Games have changed over the years, so how will Duke kick it with the new kids on the block?

Just fine, according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. In fact, Pitchford reckons games have "stagnated" somewhat over the years, and Duke's classically secret-filled worlds will be a breath of fresh air among today's linear shooters.

"Sure, games have evolved in some ways but there are some areas where they've stagnated," Pitchford told the PS Blog. "For example, Duke Nukem 3D was really innovative, at the time, with its mix of combat and environmental puzzle solving. It was rich with interactive environments and plenty of secrets to discover if you veered off the natural path.

"Not so many games [don't] bother with those any more. Half-Life does a good job with its pacing, I suppose, but hardly anything has the level of interactivity of Duke or does the hidden Easter eggs thing any more. Duke Nukem Forever does all of that."

Pitchford tells us how DNF will stand tall and be different from other shooters, and yet he doesn't exactly explain in depth how DNF will be different from other shooters and stand tall from the others. Just more assurances. But from the footage I have seen, it doesn't seem to be anything that really stands tall from others shooters. If he really wants people to think that DNF will be different from ther shooters, they should release some footage that will really wow and amaze people.

i guess he's right that shooters have stagnated to a degree but i don't think hidden easter eggs is what is going to sell your game randy >_>

Got this from the RPS forums:

Remember the news that owners of the Borderlands GOTY edition get early access to the Duke Nukem Forever demo? I'm sure you do. I'm sure you also remember the riots that ensued, the wailing, gnashing of teeth and so forth.

But fear not! It turns out that anyone who owns Borderlands on Steam, GOTY or otherwise, has just recieved a key to the Duke Nukem First Access Club. Click 'CD Key' on your Borderlands Steam page, and it should show up.

The key should be entered here: http://www.dukenukem.com/access/

I'm not sure if this is a mistake, or if the initial announcement was in error, but I'd like to give Gearbox the benefit of the doubt.

Worked for Digi and me.

Thanks for the heads up guys, got registered in the first access club :D

Thanks again Shaker (first on the Civ demo), I owe you a coke or something. : D

had to separate eyes because the new smiles are horribad

Ah so there is some kind of demo out now? or one coming up?

Early access to the demo is only for people who buy the GoTY edition of Borderlands. But probably due to a cock-up people who bought the regular verion of Borderlands via Steam can get a demo key as well.

Randy Pitchford "explains" why Duke Nukem Forever will still stand tall in modern times:
I don't think it was really the secrets that made Duke 3D progressive for the time (though they were certainly a neat touch), it was just the open level design in general. If they manage to create nice maps with a good degree of exploration instead of being linear corridors, it could be worth a look regardless of how derivative the actual shooting is.

Also, "Not so many games [don't] bother with those any more." Uhh, I don't think the author read that line properly, heh.

Hey I'm just jumping in to this thread with some hyperbole, but is anyone else really really disconcerted that this game is actually being made? Like, not "under development", but that there's a very real chance that it'll come out?
I've grown up without Duke Nukem Forever, it's been unreleased at all the important moments of my life. For as long as I've been playing videogames, it hasn't been there, and that will soon all be destroyed.

I just feel like we're tempting fate/the implosion of the universe by actually allowing this game to finally exist.

I'll be really worried when it's announced for a 2012 release.

My life will keep flowing the same way, DNF or not. What I see in that video seems just another first person shooter. Maybe it will be good, but I doubt it will be some sort of revolutionary game.

I don't think it's a coincidence that DNF also stands for 'Did Not Finish'.

For me, there were a variety of reasons why Duke Nukem 3D stood out at the time from other shooters. First off, this game definitely wasn't afraid to be ballsy and showed it proudly. With many references to politics, the abundance of strippers (through a later patch were made nude), the ability to pee to regain some health, duke's excessive swearing, Duke's lack of self conscious, the excessive violence (and Duke proudly boasting it), and others I am sure I'm missing right now, it can be easily seen why many saw it as politically incorrect. But Duke wasn't afraid to show it, and I'll admit some of it was shocking at the time for me. Duke Nukem himself was a unique character himself. He was the first character I heard talk in a FPS. Not only that, he knew he was a complete badass and had the guns (and shades) to prove it. Well maybe he was a ripoff of 80s and 90s action heroes, but his style and badass attitude (and he wasn't afraid to show it) is what drove me to like and admire him. There were also a whole bunch of nice little touches that added extra charm to the game, such as the numerous easter eggs and environmental interactions. And on top of that, the Level Designs (well, most of them) were top notch, the action was satisfying and challenging (though perhaps a bit repetitive at times), and I loved many of the weapons. They felt different from your typical FPS weapons. Hell, even to this day I miss some of them especially the Devastator.

Today, most of what Duke Nukem 3D did has already been done to death and the bar has been risen in FPS with the Half-Life and Call of Duty (well, the early COD games at least) series. It will be quite hard for DNF to raise the bar. Repeating DN3D's gameplay and style, though not done anymore, isn't exactly standing out as even some modern games have emulated DN3D's style such as the Serious Sam series and the upcoming Bulletstorm (which actually looks more appealing). And having some of the gameplay footage, it's starting to look like an average shooter. Admittingly, I'll probably still get the game since I still am a Duke Nukem fan at heart. But I won't be surprised if it isn't anywhere near as good as the Duke Nukem fans are hyping it up to be. One one more thing I'll ask of Gearbox. Please don't make this a Garbage for Windows (is) Lame title.

***UPDATE***

According to this, Randy Pitchford claims that the game will be 3 times the size of COD Modern Warfare 2:

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=269600

I wonder if this claim is really true, or if he's just talking out of his ass once again?

Your bar-is-raised commentary reminds me of why DNF took so long in the first place. The bar is a moving target that's constantly changing based on new releases. I'm glad they finally said "**** the bar" because it was time to get the thing out.

Also,

"Garbage For Windows (is) Lame?" Huh?

GFWL fanboys
SIGH

Are you a plant or something? Are you paid to mention GFWL? I haven't been keeping track, but it seems like you mentioned it in all 395 of your posts. It's really tiresome.
