This is the engine scaled to a different level.

The water is non-reflective. The textures are more bland. The lighting has little to no direction.

Thats right, but it really doesn't explain why Alyx has different clothes on.

Why would it be called a "Hydra" then?

Makes more sense for it to be water... even though water couldn't really pierce someone.

I know hydras were mainly just multi-headed monsters, but the way valve names their stuff it would be more sense if it were water.

Ok maybe if you noticed, the guy is peirced so fast by the tenticle that it would be more of a ooze blood then a splatter all over the walls kinda blood effect.
