Alyx Vance dying?

Should Alyx Vance die at the end of Ep 3?

What would you like to happend to her at the end of episode three? And mostly, why?

If she still lives, it's very probable that we'll see her in Half Life 3. Personaly, I like this character, but I think it would be nice for Valve to kill her at the end of the trilogy.
As I see it, she can die in honour sacrificing for the life of Gordon. It would bring a better motivation to play the next Half-Life game, at least she doesn't die in vain, she sacrifices for you, I don't know, she puts herself in front of you(Gordon) to protect you of a suddenly attack, etc.

What do you think?
 
I think she should get shot in the head via Overwatch sniper. Sudden, brutal, and no long goodbye.

She's managed to follow you, you,The Freeman, HEV suit and all, through infested mines, cities, buildings and forests. She's managed to fight off zombies, combine and....more zombies and combine!. She's even survived Hunters, and when one did get her, you were compelled by a higher power to force yourself down a antlion nest you didn't want to go into just to save her.

If anything, her dying now would just seem....really random and wrong. :|
 
shes the best developed character in the whole game, why would they kill her off?
 
Killing her off after all the hard work Valve have put into her character, getting the player attached to her, epecially this early would be utterly stupid. Becides it would be too predictable if they were to do it.

If they are going to kill some one off, it can't be too obvious who that character is.
 
Nah I would like to see more of her character developed, I feel she is still to play a major role in the series.
 
If she really get killed, vortigaunts need to be involved.

Otherwise, nein.

Thats definitely going to change.

I better not see Alyx smile even ONCE for about half the game, otherwise it's like she'd already forgot about Eli, which is massively killing the immersion.
 
I think Alyx is a good character and should stay a little while longer at least. Besides we've just had a death in the latest episode isn't it too soon to have another?

It's a big cliche I'd like them to avoid. At least not this soon. As sad is it would be if they killed her off at the end of Ep3, I think ending all the hard work that went into her right now would be far too premature. She's a character most of the fans like and they can still work with her creatively for a while. I can also tell you that if and when she does bite it, it's not going to be quick and sudden. Seeing at what Valve managed to pull off with Eli, it would just be a shame to have her go out in anything less.

I actually don't foresee anybody dying in Episode 3. Except maybe Breen.

Or Mossman, who's got little to live for now her lover has had his brains scrambled by Space Slugs. It's too bad we have seen so little of Mossman throughout the arc because she is arguably one of the strongest characters in the series; she's certainly my favourite.

With the death of her father this could ignite the fuse that transforms her into that mercenary like Gordon which the G-man wants, I think.

I really doubt Alyx is going to be flirting with Gordon in this episode at all, especially she should be bereaving her father.

I'll be super disappointed if she dies! I loved playing through ep1 and ep2 with her mainly by my side because as far as npc's go, shes the best one. All those npc's in hl2: follow freeman sucked, they where stuipd and where always in your way! It would be tradigic if she where to be killed, besides, Gordon has to get the girl in the end!

I realize I am in the minority here, and I would even accept being alone again without killing her off. I just think that, you can only take the relationship between Alyx and Gordon so far when you don't have Gordon speaking. Don't get me wrong, I love Alyx, but I think she will eventually have to be removed from from Gordons side, because the alternative is they become an item. The only other logical end is that they can't for some reason. But ultimately, I'm sure I'll be satysfied with however Valve handles it. They haven't let me down yet.

I thought of Alyx dying because some reasons.

First of all, the whole universe of Half-Life is tragic. There's no picnic with creatures from outer space invading and enslaving the Earth. Yes, it's humour here and there, to enlighten the moment, but the entire background is sad, depressive, even apocalyptic. Death lurks everwhere.

Second, you had Alyx in three games till now, and the fourth to come, Ep3. Yes, she's a very good character, the developers made the player to simpathy with her goals, to like the way she acts, the way she speaks, the way she fights. Gordon and Alyx have a strong relation with each other, full of trust. The fact that she would somehow die to protect Gordon(me) will make her a martir for Gordon's(my) cause. I don't think it's a cliche, well... not more than having her follow you 3 more games from now on. Till now, Gordon fighted for his survival, with that he fulfilled some wishes for the misterious entity G-man. Once the vorts interfired and blocked G-man's authority over Gordon, he's main goal is the survival of the Earth. The beauty of the story and all the plot is finally reduced at staying alive and solving puzzles, nothing more. Imagine what would have happend if that hunter killed Alyx. No returning to life, no vorts, nothing. Dead. Suddenly, the hunter would have been the most hated enemy in Half Life. When you would fight hunters after that, rage would occur. You would have a better reason to click that goddamn mouse. They killed your best friend! If something like this will happend, I guarantee you that every player will be overwhelmed by guilt and sorrow and the game after becomes a personal vendetta, suddenly you feel when you're playing. There's a fact: "you are aware of a thing's true value only after that thing is no more." What good for a tied relation with Alyx, what good all this simpathy, smiling and flirting, what good for the ideea of trust if this relation never get harmed? Imagine the loss of a girlfriend in real life. How does it feel after? The things you have no more... Besides, for the ones who want to enjoy the Alyx moments, there are 4 games with her, available.

The third reason for killing her is that is NOT cliche. Maybe is cliche in a cheap movie. But this is a game, a virtual experience where the main character is you! Everthing arround you is build for you, for impressing you, for entertaining you. The death of a good friend here will have direct impact over the player. You don't play to survive and save the mankind anymore. You play to kick some serious ass in revenge for what they do to your friend.

And please, stop bringing false reasons like : "they worked so hard on developing her, it would be stupid to kill her, there are many things that she can do more". Well, what's more? Will she start cooking? Will Gordon marry her, maybe some little semi-afro-geek-science kids with little crowbars? :)
Valve has the technology to make some other character. Working hard at Alyx's model or another character's model is the same thing. Besides, Half Life 3 with a perfectly designed Alyx would be boring (don't shoot, it's my opinion).

At the end, i would like to mention my affinity for the first Half Life game, where i was completly alone. Meeting npc-es on my way and making them follow me for a while knowing that i can leave them anytime was a very cool ideea. Even Half Life 2 has very long parts where i can be alone, analising the environment by myself. I know we humans are social beings and we need to share. But sometimes the reason why i play and re-play Half Life game is that i want to take a brake of my girlfriend chit-chat, to be alone and to do things on my own, for fun. With a very human-like character at my back who talks and talks and talks... well, it's a bit annoying, despite her charisma, jokes and other things she does.
Personaly, i think 4 games are enough of Alyx. She is the most developed character in Half Life series, but it's time to leave me alone again. And no vorts replacer, not even Barney.

As with Barney's absense from Ep. 2, anything that can be justified from a narrative standpoint is OK with me.

That said, I would be very sad if Ms. Vance were to die, as I have grown fond of her during our time together (this, despite having personally killed her multiple times with the harpoon phys item).

Yes, Valve has taken a lot of time developing Alyx's character - but surely they would've done it for some reason. It's like this, remember the first time you ever watched the final star wars movie - Darth Vader's character was so well built up, then he eventually sacrifices himself to save his son. This whole image of evil was built up around him, then he shatters it and does something drastic - we didnt expect it.

What Im basically trying to say is, is that I expect Valve has developed Alyx too much(dont flame me or I'll kill you) to just let her live at the end.

Personally, I found having Alyx with you throughout the entire episodic adventures annoying, I didnt like having her constantly following me like a ghost, giving short, unfunny sentences to the game.
Valve has shoved Alyx with the player for a reason - not just to show your anger towards the Hunters or Advisers (Alyx's near death and you-know-who's death) but for an ultimately bigger reason.

I leave Valve to decide Alyx's fate. It is ultimately their decision and I know they won't let me down in any case, but this is my opinion for the time being.

Personally, I think Alyx will die. I also have a feeling that Barney will take a part in that scene, too.
When she does die, I want the scene to be chaotic, I want there to be lots of panicked humans running about, Vortigaunts holding back the masses of Combine soldiers, I also want some Antlions to be on your side - what with the bug-bait and all, everyone holding out against the Combine in one final push, then theres Alyx lying on the floor, bleeding to death with Barney trying to treat her in the midst of this scene.
I dont want a long, tear-jerking goodbye lasting 10 miniutes. I want her death to be swift and confusing, so you're thinking of a number of things:
  • Alyx can't be dead. She must be alive...
  • I have to help out the others hold off the combine...
  • The Vortigaunts are all dying, I must rescue them...
  • There must be something else I can do to help Alyx...
  • Theres not much time left, I have to help everyone out...
  • I dont know what to do.

This will be miles more effective than having a dragged out scene with her on her death bed and Lamar trying to have his way with her face.

People talk about building up Alyx's character for a reason. Why is everybody so quick to assume this "reason" is a bullet to the back of her head? Surely Valve can whip up something more significant than this stupid, lame "OMG SUDDEN IMPORTANT CHARACTER DEATH".
 
I'm pretty positive she won't actually die. I mean, Episode 2 opened the way for her joining Gordon on his off-world travels; the Gman is now taking an immense interest in her and clearly we're going to be leaving Earth at the end of Episode 3. She's just lost the one thing that truly meant something to her - she's now free to go. You can always predict things like this because Valve always go with the logical progression.
 
Altceva and fuzileer have thought quite a bit about this and i more agree with fuzileer... you have a very active imagination, don't you?

He makes a very good point. I imagine that she will now become closer to Gordon now that she is not being "held back" by her father. However I do so suppose that doesnt mean she cant be killed, I would just think that keeping her alive would eventually help with the whole "happy ending" thing that I my self and kinda hoping for. ( but not expecting it )

As dark as Half Life can be, its not known for its sinister plot lines, its got dark humour in it, sure, but I dont think Valve has the tendancy to have a really negative ending - I think the ending will be satisfying and not so negative, I suspect that Valve will show a ray of hope shine through the mess that is Earth, like a child being cradled by a couple or something. I doubt the ending will make us want to kill ourselves.
 
Plot for HL 3:
How about the Combine abducting Alyx, and Gordon going to their homeworld to kick some ass and save her? Of course, he's in trouble with the teleportation and reach the homeworld 100 years later. Alyx is dead by a long time ago, Gordon finds evidece of numerous tests and tortures on her. It doesn't need to show violent images or recordings, a clue should fits, something to make you think of, like the papers regarding 7 hours war in Eli's lab. A note in a computer is more than enough.

That's all. No more draging the same person permanently with you. Maybe i would enjoy some Combine-homeworld smart companion turrets (smarter and evil, like the Doom 3 mobile turret model) or drones with incredible AI, or even a wisp-like entity who can help me posses enemies and make them my buddies, so i can really interract with them by presssing the use key. There are so many interesting companions, why should Valve stick to Alyx?

If Half Life 3 will be released in ...let's say...summer 2010, i bet we will have the computers advanced enough to play a game with an Uber-Strider companion following Gordon for 30 minutes, killing everything in it's way, demolishing every structure, rising chaos all around, triggering 2-3 events per minute. Well, that's a hell of a companion, isn't it? :)
 
I don't care for her more than any other character. If she dies, I won't really mind. That said, just killing her after you went through so much trouble to keep her alive up till now would suck.
 
Now with Alyx's relationship with the G-man and all, to me it kind of confirms to me that Alyx is as important or more important than Gordon. The Gman has "investments" in her and I don't forsee her dying.

Although they could always kill her off because after all the development they put into her and getting the players attached to her, it would make it all that more emotional.

Hello everybody this is my first post,and if Alyx is gonna die and she gonna sacrafice herself for gordon,I think it will be from a headcrab infestation,and you will have to fight her as a boss later.
